10:00 wake up

My daughter has been consistently waking up sometime in the 10:00pm hour for a couple of weeks now, regardless of what time she goes to sleep for the night (though it's usually somewhere around 7:00). I can't figure out why. She's not hungry (she will go longer than that through the day, plus has had cereal before bed), and there is nothing going on here that time of day. I don't get it. Thoughts?

Re: 10:00 wake up

  • How does she go down to sleep? If you rock her or have any other type of sleep association, she may be changing sleep cycles at that time then realize that support is missing and fully wake up and cry. If that's the case, I've read that you'll want to be sure to put her down drowsy but awake so she can learn to fall asleep herself. Then when she changes sleep cycles throughout the night she won't need you and will be able to soothe herself back to sleep.
For the record, this is all based on what I've read not my actual experience. I'm still trying to figure out how to get my LO to go down drowsy but awake so she wakes up constantly throughout the night.

  • She's actually a really great sleeper for the most part. Sometimes she'll fall asleep to her bottle and will wake up at the 40 min mark, but will easily go back to sleep, and sometimes I'll lay her down awake and she'll go to sleep on her own. She does fall asleep with her soother a lot but can fall asleep without it. I can't figure out what this 10:00 nonsense is about!
  • DS1 did this when he was young for what seemed like months!  We tried all sorts of things but nothing worked.  He would wake up at 10:00, almost on the dot every night.  Eventually he just stopped doing it on his own.
  • My first thought was a sleep association as well but DS2 does this around 11 or 10:30.  He wants to eat.  He goes 4 hours during the day but he likes to tank up before a good long sleep and eats a lot during the evening and it seems that this wake up is just a part of that.  He is a bit atypical in that his longest stretch of sleep is his second stretch.  When I feed him during that wake up he will sleep until 5 or so. I have actually started taking it as a sign that I'm going to get more sleep that night surprisingly.
  • I have no advice but don't feel so bad because at this point my baby wakes up every hour between 8pm and 6:30am. Around this age they hit that four month sleep regression where they are likely to wake up between sleep cycles. Hopefully your baby and mine start sleeping better soon. My cousin has a five month old and she said after a few rough weeks he's back to sleeping well.
