Fit Pregnancy???

Does anyone else notice the pressure to stay fit when pregnant? I feel like I am behind the game already by not being in amazing shape to start and now I read all this stuff about staying fit and being only 7 weeks all I want to do is eat bread and sleep. :-/ How does do you get the energy to workout or just even walk everyday?

  • I give a lot of credit for my relatively easy and quick L&D to how active I was when I was pregnant. Start out small - short walks - and work up from there. Even small amounts of exercise are good.

  • I also find I feel better when I've done some sort of work out.

If I'm really tired and don't feel like it, I say I'll walk for 10 minutes.  10 minutes sounds totally doable.  But only once since getting pregnant have I ever stopped after 10 minutes.  I usually hit that point and say "I feel good.  I can keep going."

  • Working out is a huge part of my life.  I am a runner, I love crossfit, and I teach a cardio and strength class.  I know, from my past two pregnancies, that keeping exercising really helped me emotionally and physically.  Like Smallinetta said, remind yourself of how good you feel after it's done.  The hardest part is always getting off the couch, but you will more often than not, feel better when you're done.  If you would like ideas or motivation, I can try and help!  :)

  • I don't feel pressure, but I definitely want to be active throughout my pregnancy to the best of my ability.

Right now it's tough --- temperatures are in the single digits and I feel so crummy, walking sounds like a chore. When I feel a little better, I'm going to try some prenatal workout videos and see how I like those. Once temps warm up I'd really like to get back to running if the doctor says it's okay.
  • @Jarico03 don't be too hard on yourself.  Try to move around a few times a day.. I know last time around I got an awesome burst of energy for the whole 2nd trimester. So if you start now with some walking or even arm circles/lunges/squats while watching TV then you'll be ready to keep it going as you start to feel better.

There's a lot of pressures about a lot of things while pregnant - you do what's right for you and what your OB/midwife agrees is in your best interest. You'll never do it all 100% perfectly, and that's ok

  • I am trying to keep up with my 3 times a week regmine. My fatigue and nausea hasnt helped so I take a less intense excercise. Soi just fight through it. I usually feel better after. I would not start a new excercise plan now just because your pregnant that is excessive of walking or yoga.

The question is were you active before finding out? If you weren't that changes things. Try to go for a walk at least 5-6 days a week for at least 10 minutes. Just getting your heart rate up is helpful.

I am incredibly active but it's getting so hard for me because morning sickness doesn't really let up. I don't feel better after my workouts anymore but I don't feel worse, and I'm not overdoing it, so I keep going, I've just slowed down.

If you're just starting make sure you clear anything with your OB and change your eating habits to accommodate lower activity levels but remember, it's not pressure to be fit during pregnancy, it's encouragement to be healthy. Once I shifted my mindset it got easier to exercise. Good luck, @Jarico03 !

  • I hit the gym about 5-6 times a week, but mostly just because I need a little Mommy-break from my other two kids! :)  And I also hit the sweets so hard that if I didn't, I'd be huge-pregnant or not!
  • I have been wanting to work out but with the queasiness, night classes, needing to study the nights I don't have night classes, having brain over load from training for a new job and the night classes, I'm usually not really up to working out.  I'm *hoping* that once we get to the 2nd tri and things have become a little more routine and nausea has died down some, I'll be up for at least a walk after work because I really want to have a healthy pregnancy.  I really wanted to do some yoga too but its been hard to want to get to the gym or do anything at home even after work other than make dinner, do dishes, homework and spend time with DH.  The struggle is real.

I would second the thoughts on not starting anything up that you weren't doing before pregnancy and encourage just walking or something low key.

  • @Jarico03  I feel you 100%! i never really did much before finding out i was PG and seeing all this "exercise NOW" tips/advice is just making me feel like a bum. I did practice yoga for about a year (I LOVE YOGA) but my instructor's studio has been down for a few months, being repaired after a major water leak. I have the essentials to do yoga at home but i love going to class and it MAKES me do it. Just because i have the items here at my house doesnt mean im going to use them, i find it hard to do at home, alone. But other than that i dont do much. My parents have a pool and i will be using that when it warms up, maybe after the winter months are over we wont feel so bad!
  • I too teach still jog 3x week just 2 miles for now and yoga
  • You may be exhausted, but do it anyways. Once you do- you will have more energy and feel better. Exercise wakes up our bodies. :)
  • I'm only 6 weeks, but I feel that exercising regularly really improves my mood and energy levels. I've been doing yoga and will add some walking too. I've heard some ladies say that getting up and moving, even when it's the last thing you want to do, helps relieve their symptoms, even if just a little bit. However, listen to your body, and give yourself permission to take it easy if you need to. The first trimester is hard enough without putting extra pressure on yourself.
  • It makes me feel so much better to exercise. It doesn't have to be much, even a 10 minute brisk walk three times a day is beneficial
  • Working out and being active is just such a huge part of my life-- I truly enjoy it and feel so much better when keeping up with my normal activity level. Of course the fatigue has changed things a little bit-- I take a little more rest between sets, for example, but I'm hoping I can keep this up as much as possible for the first tri-- and beyond!
  • I normally exercise regularly but I hadn't worked out for a month due to having a 2-month nasty cold. The week I got my BFP I was feeling exhausted and could tell just from that that I was probably pregnant. The day after my BFP I started working out again. It's only been a week since then but I feel so much better already from just a week ago and I'm even more into the pregnancy and having more symptoms. It does make a difference. It can be really hard when you don't feel well but it will help you feel better if you make it a regular thing.
