Rocker Idea

OK so first off, long time reader first time contributor. So please don't cast me off as a random. I just want to know if as a ftm my idea is genius or I am seriously missing something. So, I keep sitting in gliders and rocking chairs and none of them are really comfortable to the point I can imagine realistically sleeping in one. We plan on putting our daughter in the nursery but I want a really comfortable chair. I am seriously debating just buying a plush leather lazyboy rocker. Is there some reason that wouldn't work? Would it be hard to nurse, too big, am I just not thinking of something? Putting it out there, is there something I should be thinking about here I missed? Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: Rocker Idea

  • We considered buying a new rocker glider, but remembered we have a plush leather rocker recliner in our basement that we never use because we're never down there. It's super comfy though and would be easy to clean from spit up and such. We decided to give it a try for the nursery to start and if we don't like it, than will buy something new. Curious to hear others opinions too as a FTM.

  • I had a glider in the room when both of my babies were born. I did use it MOTN for DD. But we had moved between the two and with DS we had a lazy boy recliner that was super soft in the living room. I much preferred that to the glider. It was so much more comfy and the arms were a perfect cushion for my arm while nursing.

  • After my third was born C-section I lived in a recliner. It was too painful to get in and out of bed or any lying position with the staples in my stomach so the recliner was my best friend. The arms if the chair became a plus as my son grew too because I nursed for 10 months and baby gets heavy on the arms. Also it was a soft suade leather so it wasn't sticky like some slick leathers can become after sitting in them for a while, but still easy to clean.
  • We're going to buy a recliner too... I know there will be times that me or my husband will sleep in it for awhile so I want it to be comfortable.

Plus I think trying to maneuver around an ottoman with a sleeping baby will be harder than just pushing the lever down.

  • We ordered a rocking recliner, that also swivels. It's not as big/bulky as a traditional recliner you'd find in a living room, so it will fit nicely in the nursery.
Honestly, I had assumed we'd just be getting a glider until I sat in the recliner...my decision was easily made. It's SO comfortable!

  • We have a fake leather recliner and it was AMAZING!  When he spit up, it wiped off easily.  It was comfy when he slept on me for naps.  It is comfy now for reading books together.   I tested it when I was pretty pregnant.  I figured if I could get out of it with a big belly, I could get out of it with a sleeping baby.  That held true.

It will be going to the nursery and DS will be getting a different recliner.

  • My friend bought a lazy boy as her rocker and that thing is magnificent! I'm considering one too because of how comfy it is and easy to clean.
  • Recliner all the way! So comfy.

  • I'm borrowing a lazy boy from a family member -- ugly as sin (not the beautiful leather ones all of you are describing!) but soooo comfy. A few colourful cushions and a throw will hopefully disguise the ugly
  • We got a La-z-boy leather swivel/rocker/recliner with DS1 for the nursery and I have NEVER regretted it! In fact, on multiple occasions, I have thought to myself what a great investment it was. Even if you hope not to, there will probably be nights you fall asleep in it and it is so worth it to get something comfortable! We got ours custom, so it was pretty expensive at like $2k, but I just love it so much.

I probably would not recommend the white leather, however  it looks so nice, but has turned a little blue from whatever jeans my mom decided to wear while sitting in it. Here is a pic from when we first got it before DS1 was born...

  • We have a rocker/recliner in DDs room. It's a smaller, compact design and we've really liked it.

A STM friend of mine recommended we go that route. In her opinion, gliders were not very comfortable, pricey for what it is, and she found that the ottoman was constantly in the way.

  • We got a lay-z-boy rocker/recliner when we had DD. I was just telling my husband the other day that I still feel like it was one of the best decisions we made. I ended up having an emergency c-section and it was the only place I could sleep for several weeks. I am so glad we had it.

  • It's a smart idea. I hate our glider. It's not comfortable at ALL. Totally getting a reclining lazy boy this time :)

  • We ordered two rocking recliners that swivel. Originally we were going to put one in our living room and one in the nursery, but changed out mind and now both are in the living room. We figured I'd have these to sit in whenever I'm downstairs (they're super comfortable) and then I found a glider at BRU that is reasonably comfortable so going to get that before the baby comes for the nursery itself. So many new chairs!! But yea - I'd say getting something like a lazboy is a great idea.
  • Go for the recliner! Our rocking glider we had for DS and will probably end up using for DD was never one I could fall asleep in. Luckily, DS was pretty good and I never needed to stay in there for a long period of time. Maybe I can talk DH into a splurge :)

  • I had a glider with our first and didn't like it.  When we moved, I bought a recliner and it is in our son's room.  We will use that for the baby as our son is old enough now that we don't rock him really anymore!  I think it is a great idea.  We got an awesome one for $300 which is pretty comparable to what we spent on a glider!
  • I've got both and definitely used the recliner more. My mom uses the glider bc it's easier to get in and out of, but the recliner is better for sleeping. Ours is an ugly brown and about 20 years old, but so comfy!
  • I'm just jealous that all of you ladies have space for a big cushy rocker recliner. We are super tight for space so we just have a small glider. It's pretty comfy but I'm sure I'll be wishing for something better after little man is here.

  • Thanks everyone! Headed out to look at recliners this weekend. We are sold!
  • We found a really comfy reclining rocker from Buy Buy Baby for DS, and I still use it a lot now that he's 19 months.  It was great for MOTN feedings, although I've never slept in it.  I've laid in it with DS sleeping on me, but I can't sleep when he's on me (nothing to do with the chair itself).  IMO, between feedings and naps, you'll be spending a lot of time in that chair over the next couple of years, so get one that you think is comfortable.  Who cares if it's from a baby store or not, it's more for you.
  • @btorgers Where did you get yours. I am leaning toward the rocker/recliner option but most that I have seen are very expensive.
  • I got mine from a place here in Colorado called American Furniture Warehouse. I know they are in other states, but I do not think they are national. I am not sure where you are located.  I know this sounds crazy, but check out Big Lots.  Sometimes they have really good furniture at a good deal.
  • Nope, you're definitely an evil genius. :)
