Bath Time

When are you transitioning to big tub without the baby tub? We bought a mat for when the time comes but not really sure?

Does anyone else's baby get angry when you do the hair? She loves the bath until we move to the head.

Re: Bath Time

  • We went for the big tub almost immediately. We don't use a mat or towel anymore, she just lays on the bottom of the tub in a couple inches of water. She doesn't roll over because it gets her face wet. I don't sit her up yet because it's too slippery and I can't keep a good hold on her.

Hair washing has always been a huge tearful battle for us. DS1 HATED getting his hair washed for 4 years and has finally gotten over it. DS2 is just turning 3 and still hates it. LO doesn't hate it yet but then again she also doesn't really have much hair.

  • We've been laying her in the tub since about early November. She loves it.
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
  • i was wondering this same thing since LO is getting too big for the baby tub.  I may buy a padded mat and do this soon!  She can't sit for too long, so she'd have to be laying down but i guess that's fine.

OMG she hates the whole face area.  She doesn't have enough hair that we shampoo it...we just wipe her head down with the soapy washcloth.

  • We are in the big bathtub already as well. She loves it so much, she immediately flips on to her belly and starts "swimming" around the tub chasing all of her toys.

  • She has zero hair but gets sooo pissy when the water goes on the head. It's torture to her!
  • We have LO in the baby tub still, but I sit him up in it and have one hand around him so he doesn't fall over.  He loves to slap his hand down on the water and splash and has recently discovered that if he kicks his legs hard he can also splash.  I'll have to try him in the big tub laying on his back in some water, I bet he'd love that and I honestly never thought of that.  LO is actually fine with water on the head and in his face but my 4 y/o DD screams and cries when I wash her hair.  Her hair is long and thick so it really takes a fair amount of water to first get it wet and then to rinse all the soap out.  I've tried telling her numerous times to tilt her head back and it wouldn't get in her face but she's 4 and doesn't listen.  Last night I pointed out that her baby brother didn't cry when I washed his hair and water got in his face so maybe that will help.
  • I have the munchkin blow up duck bathtub and LO loves it. I think it's pretty adorable too. i have put water on his head from very early on and let it run down his face so he really doesn't care when I wash his hair. It will startle him but he doesn't cry.
  • We've been in the big tub for awhile now. We started by putting her head on a folded up towel but now she sits on a padded mat. She loves everything about bath time but getting out.
  • LO will be 8 in a week months and we're ready to transition to the big tub as soon as we get around to buying a mat - he just wants to crawl out of the baby tub now. For now, we'll often jump in the big tub to give him some room.
No way will this kid lay down for a bath (or even a diaper change, lately!), he only wants to be upright or crawling. He whines a little when we do hair, but gets distracted pretty quickly.

  • We still do the occasional bath in his baby tub, but we have moved to the big tub for most bath times now.  Me or SO will throw on a swimsuit and go in with him.  He really seems to enjoy bath time and doesn't fuss too much about his head/hair getting washed.  We also started "swim" lessons 2 weeks ago, just to get him used to being in and around water.  So far so good.

    This.
  • I still have my twins in their infant seat in the tub. However, we will be going into the big tub soon. They are starting to sit on their own pretty well, so we're going to try what we did with our 3 year old ds. We put him in a small clothes basket in the tub. The holes allow water to get in, but helps to support them so they don't fall. It worked well for him. Plus it keeps the toys from floating away from them. It was super cheap and worked really well.

  • We have an infant/toddler tub. We took the infant sling out and it seems to work ok. I'm too nervous about putting her in the big tub! I tried it last week but I put on a swimsuit and joined her.
  • I'm keeping LO in the baby tub for as long as possible. She can sit up, which she loves and I put it in the kitchen sink, which I love. She doesn't mind laying in the big tub but would rather sit. We have an extra deep soaking tub, so it's a huge pain for me to kneel on the outside and reach in. Once she can sit well enough to take a little jostling, I plan on giving the kids baths together.
  • @alcrimmins and @amac12999 where did you get your mat I got foam pieces but they float but I am going to keep them but have been looking for something else to put under so when he is big enough to sit he doesn't slip as much?
  • ^ what about a bath towel?
  • I put a small laundry basket in the big tub. It gives LO edges to hang onto. She loves it.
  • I got a mat in the shape of a whale at Target. They also have polka dot ones but DH liked the whale better. I was trying to send him mental notes to pick the polka dot one, but the whale is cool too. They also have a bunch at BRU.
  • We have a seat for the sink. Lo loves it and man it saves my back. He also doesn't mind water on his head or face. You could dump a cup of water over him and he'd love it. DD is five and still needs a dry rag to cover her eyes. Any water in her face and its death. Any suggestions for an older kid?
  • Those using a laundry basket - you probably know this, and maybe it's not as big of a risk in the tub, but be careful of tipping. MIL put LO in a laundry basket on her concrete laundry room floor. He reached for something outside the basket, the whole thing tipped over, and he bonked his head.

He was fine, but the tip factor was a surprise for MIL and him.

+1 for baby in the big tub. He loves to sit but it makes me nervous so I usually make him lie back down. He sits up in the sink and loves that.
  • We've been in the big tub for a while now too. Got the blue whale mat from BBB also.
  • My big guy (21 lbs at 7 months) outgrew the baby tub a couple months ago. We got a nonslip mat for the bottom of the tub at bed bath and beyond. One of us takes a bath with him every other night. He likes the bath, especially trying to drink bath water and pulling on the chain to the drain. I like to take a cup of water in the bath for him so he can practice drinking from a cup and doesn't drink as much bath water.

I never take my eyes off of them when they're in the basket, and actually I always had at least one hand on it while my son was in it. I haven't put my girls in it yet. But I'll have one on each side, so that should help them balance. I know they can tip with the slightest movement, so I'm extra careful.

  • This weekend I put LO in the big tub on his back and his tummy and he loved it!  DD graciously shared some of her bath time toys and he had a great time "chasing" after them when they floated away.  Thanks for the ideas ladies!
  • We use this seat and it's great. It has suction cups on the bottom so there's no tipping. My LO loves water poured over his head as well!
