Registry do's and don't

Hi Ladies,

This is mainly for STM's and up or if the FTM have gotten opinions from other mommies, feel free to comment too. I find out what I am having tomorrow and was wondering about the registry.

What are some things that you purchased or was gifted that you barely used? So far, I've read that the diaper genie and a bassinet is a waste of money. Anything else out there I can save my moolah on? Any help would be great to help narrow down the registry.

thanks!!
Jen

  • FTM here, but we asked our parents for advice on this. They said stick with the basics- crib, car seat, cheap stroller (some are outrageous, around $800!). Changing tables are usually a waste of money, most people seem to use their bed or the floor. I'm personally staying away from those weird walker and bouncy things- I have mild hip dysplasia, which I think I got from using those things as a baby. There are better ways to strengthen babies' legs, IMVHO. I don't really want to use a playpen either, so we're not getting anything like a pack & play. My in-laws have a diaper genie and love it, but honestly, their baby's room smells awful; I think they are just used to the smell and don't notice it.

The one thing I do want to splurge on is a bassinest, which is a pretty cool bassinet. I know lots of people think bassinets are a waste of money, though. We may also splurge on a fancier convertible crib, since they convert to a toddler bed and then a full sized bed. I don't mind spending a couple hundred extra on a bed that could last us a long time.

Oh and clothes! Our parents said don't spend a ton of money on clothes, since they outgrow them pretty quickly.

  • I'm interested in seeing others suggestions. I don't want to register for junk just to register for it but I've been told there's not enough on my registry. What should we be registering that shower guest will want to buy? Will they buy expensive gifts like rockers/ gliders?
    Me: 31 | DH: 33
    DD: 05/14/16
    Baby #2 EDD: 12/23/19
  • @Charla1224 I sent my registry to two friends with kids and they both told me the same thing.  Some things that they told me to add were:  sleepsacks, muslin blankets, bibs, nipple cream and nursing pads (if that doesn't weird you out), humidifier, sound machine.

I don't know if your shower guests will buy a rocker/glider, but I have definitely pooled my money as a guest to buy more expensive items like a monitor, car seat base, etc.

I agree with most of what's been posted. Every baby likes different things. As for more expensive items, people might pool together. My cousins did that and got us the britax convertible car seat we wanted.

Must haves for us were the pack n play (lowest frills model), rock n play, car seats and bases, strollers, baby carrier and a wrap for around the house. Swaddles galore as well. We used a bath sling rather than a separate tub and liked that. Non slip bath mat is also great to have once they get bigger. A sound machine and nightlight turtle were really helpful as DS got older.

Easy things to add are baby care items - body wash, lotions etc. We used the mustela shampoo for cradle cap a lot and that stuff is pricey!

ETA: this time around we have also bought a bassinest, since we are in a different house so our needs have changed. I also want a new boppy (ours was second hand and it's not as nice as what's out there now).
  • Another FTM registry question: should we be putting baby proofing items on the registry? Or did STMs baby proof on the fly as their babies grew? It seems like baby proofing is far off but what do I know  ;)
  • I just saw a registry that mostly had cute, unique outfits from Etsy. I really liked this idea, because that's the stuff that's fun to give, and now I can make sure I get fun clothes that are exactly what they want. I wasn't going to register for any clothes because I figure people just give those things for fun anyway, but I realized that people always give clothes anyway, and this way I can have some control over what kind of clothes my baby's getting and what she'll wear all the time! So I'll probably add at least a few fun outfits that I really like, even though I don't particularly need a lot of clothes since hand-me-downs are plentiful.
  • If you have any specific books you want, add those! We have about 3 pages of books on our amazon registry- mostly because we already have a lot and this lets people know which ones we would like.
  • We had twins, and we Loved:  Pack N Play, Rock n Play, Boppy.  I used a bottle warmer because I had a lot of frozen milk from the nicu. (on that note, add breastmilk storage bags, like Lansinoh, if you are planning to freeze milk!).  We used a separate plastic bath that fit in sink, bathtub or free standing.  We got graco car seats, a snap n go stroller (invaluable for twins!), a joovy side by side double stroller, and 2 umbrella strollers.  (strollers are whole 'nother debate!).  We also used a changing pad on top of a dresser.  Register for 2 covers for washing convenience - 2 boppy covers as well!  Register for a high chair and a baby gate or two, even if you don't plan to use it right away!  If you plan to baby wear, register for a carrier!

If you register for bottles, open one package at a time to make sure baby likes them too!  We were given a dozen or so glass Dr. Brown's bottles, but the girls liked the bigger lansinoh nipples, so I returned all but 4 Dr. Browns.

I put a few outfits on our registry to show what I liked and give people ideas.  I also put swaddling blankets, swaddle me's, and halo sleep sacks (to be used in that order!).

Hmm what else?  We use biokleen detergent for clothes, babyganics bottle soap (love!), and burts bees unscented shampoo/bath soap, and coconut oil on everything!

Definitely agree that it depends on the lifestyle as well as the baby.

    DS1:
Refused to sleep in the bassinet, pack n play ended up in our room. Hated swings in all forms. Loved floor toys (those baby play mat things, we had a cheap one that he was obsessed with)

    Ds2:
Also just slept in the pack n play. He loved every swing/glider he was ever put in and threw a fit when he out grew them. Hated the play mats.

    Both:
Bumbo was a lifesaver, they both loved it. Also loved to sit with/prop on/tummy time with the boppy pillow. We used our travel system ALOT, the stroller that came with it was perfect for what we needed. We also put our convertible car seat on the registry and bought it with the completion discount at the end. We used our exersaucer alot, ds1 liked it much more than ds2. We got a walker as well and that was useless. By the time their feet reached the ground they were already walking.

I will add this too. As a ftm I totally missed the memo that not all babies like the same bottles. As I planned to bottle feed from the beginning, I registered for only 1 type of bottle. Neither of my boys would use it. We were most successful in the end with the Avent natural flow bottles. DS1 was super picky and that's all he would use. If bottles are something you're considering adding, I'd do a couple different brands with different types of nipples and see what baby likes.

Edit to add, my boys also have super sensitive skin...we still use the dreft detergent on all of their clothes and bedding, as well as the spare blankets around our house. The dreft stain spray is amazing, I haven't had to trash any baby clothes I've used it on (and ds1 got bbq sauce all over a white shirt...saved it).
  • @babyfmama you can put safety items on the registry. We did some baby-proofing before the baby was here, and some around 6months when DS started crawling, then more once he could walk and climb. Things like cabinet locks, drill in gates, and furniture anchors are easier to install before the baby is here IMO. One of the reasons why I love the magnetic cabinet locks so much is that they're sturdy, but also have a switch on them to turn them off-- so we didn't set them to lock automatically until DS was mobile.
  • FTM here, but we asked our parents for advice on this. They said stick with the basics- crib, car seat, cheap stroller (some are outrageous, around $800!). Changing tables are usually a waste of money, most people seem to use their bed or the floor.
Strollers are CRAZY expensive!  I just want something to be able to transport my child safely!  I've seen lots of Pinterest ideas where you can buy the changing table pad and secure it to the top of the dresser.  Not sure about that though...
  • FTM here: We are registering for a bunch of books, diapers and wipes, etc since those are extra additions that people can get if other stuff is gone.  We aren't registering for our larger furniture since I want it set up prior to our shower, which is only a month ahead of our due date.  We aren't putting clothes on either (except for basic white onsies) since people will buy clothes anyways, even though we have more than enough...  We also currently make our own laundry soap (so simple and inexpensive!) so we won't be going with any specific baby kind.

  • You may not register for this but I am a HUGE fan of a changing table. It's so much more comfortable for you and you have to keep all your supplies somewhere anyway. We bought a dresser/media cabinet from Crate & Barrel. Now it's in our living room (and now I'm buying a dresser/ch. table from WalMart for this next round of babies). We never attached the changing pad to the dresser like you're supposed to (didn't want to ruin the surface)-just stayed right with baby and worked fine.
I loved having jumperoos - my kids loved them. The doorway kind don't take much storage space.
  • They make changing table attachments that you screw into the back of the dresser and they have a felt cover on the bottom so they don't scratch the top of your dresser.

Similar to this, our changing pad came with attached strap-anchors that we screwed onto the back of the dresser. You shouldn't leave baby unattended on any changing table, so you basically just need to be sure that the changing pad won't accidentally slip around once baby/toddler gets to the squirmy stage.
  • @kbrands7 thanks for the advice!

Yea, right?! The $800 one had a button you pushed and it folded/unfolded itself. Cool to watch in the store, but jeez, how lazy can people get that they can't even fold up a stroller on their own?
  • I'm going to plug Baby List again (they should really hire me for their marketing team) because they have a variety of sample lists that were really helpful when I did mine. I can't stop messing with mine, I keep deleting and adding like crazy. I figure it's fair game until the shower invites go out.

One thing I have on my list that hasn't been mentioned is a bottle sanitizer. I used as a nanny and it was really helpful. Nothing huge just a small one to fit a few bottles/nipples/pacifiers. I also included that grass patch thing for bottle drying and a bottle scrub brush - my BFF is OCD and already bought them for me!

I can attest to baby list. @LadySamLady got me hooked!

As a ftm I'm trying to keep it simple, and figure if we need something we can run out and get it later. There is a BRU a 10 minute drive away so it's not too much of a hassle. Since I'm not having a shower my registry is more of a running list of what I need to get and I will give it to anyone that asks. We bought our own travel system, bouncer, activity may, crib/mattress, changing table and sheets. So what's on my list that I would consider a necessity are the monitor, sound machine, diaper bag, books, bottles, pump and high chair.

I'm jealous of anyone with a glider or rocker. We don't have room for one unfortunately...

We still use the grass drying rack every single day after almost 2 years. Every family we know has one and it's still on everyone's counter. Definitely a worthwhile purchase, we use it now for sippy cups.
  • @ LadySamLady I did use the Dr. Brown's bottle sterilizer. We had preemie twins that I pumped for - so between pump parts and bottles, I ran it twice a day for a long while!  It worked very well for us.  I didn't take as great care of it as I should have - I didn't descale the water deposits as often as I should have.  I don't know if I will be able to use it this time.

It depends on your lifestyle, your parenting plan, and your baby's taste (that you won't know until they're here).

For me with DD I BF, had her sleep in our room, did lots of skin to skin contact, did disposable diapers, sometimes we co slept, she also slept in her room in her crib after 7 mos, and I also bottle fed.
    DOs:
Monitor, diapers (I prefer Pampers Swaddlers from Amazon bc one box lasted us 1 month), wipes, crib sheets, Aquaphor, shampoo, lotion, blankets (if you're going to swaddle I would just focus on swaddling blankets), gowns (life savers!), bassniet (DD would only want to be changed in it...she did not sleep in it), bouncer, swing (DD would only sleep in this for a few months), breast pump (if you're BFing), bottles (only a couple of different kinds bc you never know what LO will take to and they will start out only needing 4oz bottles and slow flow nipples just FYI), passies (get different kinds in these too bc you never know what he/she will take to), wash cloths, baby bath, thermometer, humidifier, Infant Tylenol, diaper bag, stroller, car seat (depending on how many cars you have I would suggest more than one if you have 2 unless you're going to use the car seat carrier with a base. Then I would get 2 bases), lanolin (if you're going to BF), formula (if you're going to formula feed... I'm a big Enfamil fan), I swear by Colic Calm for hiccups/upset tummy/reflux (all natural no meds in it), onesies, carrier cover (you'll love it while out and LO is napping), I swear by cloth diapers (unfolded) for burp cloths, I swore by my Boppy, socks, glider or rocking chair,  and pack n play... I'm sure there's more.

    DON'Ts (IMO):
Wipe warmer, Boogie wipes (although I love them. I got them for a gift but they aren't necessary), diaper carrier (I used a basket I got at Goodwill for $2), Diaper genie (I've heard they break a lot. We just stole extra bags at the self checkout at Walmart and use those...works just as well), a bunch of changing mats (they usually come in diaper bags and you can use a baby blanket just as well), bottle sterilizers (I boiled mine one a week to every 2 weeks), formula maker (re:formula keurig), bottle warmer, high chair (you won't need it for a while), hand mitts (use socks), changing table (technically it's not a need and I never used mine), and I'm sure there's more.

I left out crib bc it't not a must have. DD slept in hers for maybe 4 mos if that. I plan to have DD2 sleep in the pack n play or swing until her toddler bed. Now, she may need/want to sleep in a crib so I have one but I don't plan on it. That one is a your choice type thing.

ETA: IMO Dreft is overpriced. We use All Free and Clear (same thing essentially...no dyes, hypoallergenic, etc) and it's only $8-10

  • Third vote for Babylist. It's awesome how you can add anything from any website (mine has items from Amazon, Buy Buy Baby, Target, etc.) all in one place. Definitely still adding to it even though shower invites are out! And as @LadySamLady said, they give great sample registries as examples and you can add to your list right from them.
  • I will also vote for baby list! It was easier for me to list things generically and add notes such as "any crib sheets in fun patterns" I'm not super picky so I like that people can just check items off and buy them where convenient. The sample registries are also helpful and I looked at a friend's registry for ideas.

I will say that it was a huge help to baby proof before we really thought we needed to. My son was a lot craftier than I ever imagined and I was so glad MH had installed the cabinet/drawer locks and toilet seat lock while he was still immobile because the crawling stage hit faster than I expected. My Shark Tank idea is a way to baby proof the toilet paper that actually works! If anyone has any tips, I am all ears!

Also, it was nice to have time to get used to having to do the extra step to open kitchen cabinets. Sometimes those baby locks are mama-proof too! Oh, and get more gates than you think you need. I had one for the top of the stairs, but needed to bring it downstairs every day because my son would try to scale the staircase when I turned my back. So I ended up getting one for the bottom and keeping one at the top. Seems excessive, but after my son took a tumble down the first 5 steps, it was totally justified! I also liked having one at the entrance to the kitchen and playroom (of course, it really depends on the layout of your house).

Lastly, take the time to literally crawl around and see if there are any cords, outlets, door stoppers, loose floorboards, etc that you can't notice from 5 ft up. I discovered that the transition from the carpet in the playroom to the tile in the foyer had some sharp edges that we needed to get fixed before a baby sliced a hand or knee on it.

  • Yes, @laurenmdrn16 I second gating off the kitchen! We did as an extra check against kitchen dangers and the stairs to the basement (which connect to the kitchen) and I'm so glad we did! It's been great to keep Ds away from things like boiling water and gives a sort of double-door protection against cabinets, the oven, and the stairs.
  • I'm a FTM, but I've read to put items of all different prices in the registry, so whoever buys you a gift will have a variety of options to choose from, no matter their budget. I've added everything from outlet plugs and small toys to the larger items, like high chair and swing. It's very possible that a few people might go in together on a larger item. And whatever is left after the shower, we can buy with a discount
  • I will also second PPs who have said that diaper genies are no good. I nannied for a family that had one and it was always getting jammed, the replacement bags were expensive, and the baby's room always reeked of old diapers! We use a metal trash barrel with mint scented bags (they sell them at home improvement stores around here because they help keep raccoon out of your trash) and we have never had an issue. Guests are shocked to learn that the brown colored trash bin (MH spray painted the metal to fit in with our decor) in our living room contains smelly poopy diapers. You really can't tell! Be aware that plastic bins will absorb the smell and the vanilla scented bags just make it smell sickly sweet. Go for metal and mint!

  • Yes yes yes to babyli.st!

They have a "help and favors" section in there. Do you guys think it's acceptable to put in things like meal delivery and maid service?
  • @kami09 I hope your babe is okay! I'm loving the suggestion of extra crib sheets though because I definitely agree. Having a few that you rarely use beats needing to do laundry in the middle of the night during a stomach flu imo.

He is okay! Thanks! I think we ate something bad when we went out last night cuz it got me too. But having that stock of sheets was clutch!
  • Yes to babylist! It has been a lifesaver compiling everything. Plus, I love how they notify you of anything goes up/down in price weekly!
