Cystic fibrosis screening costs

So today I had a doctors appointment and get my results back from all of my prenatal screening I did at 8 weeks. Everything came back fine but my doctor decided to mention that the cystic fibrosis screening with not likely be covered by insurance AND it runs around 3000. I feel like he should have told me this before I had it done! I almost fell of my chair! I have a message into my insurance company but at this point there's nothing I can do about it. If given the option I most likely would've waived it as its not something that runs in our families and now I probably won't get the quad screening which includes things that do run in our family bc I will have already incurred costs for this! Has anyone else had experience with the cystic fibrosis screening. How much did you have to pay? Did you feel like it was worth it? I'm sitting here stewing waiting to hear back from my insurance.

Re: Cystic fibrosis screening costs

  • They did ask me if I wanted it and I declined, but they never mentioned insurance. I would be SUPER PISSED if I were you! If insurance refuses to cover it I would be putting a call in to that doctor.

  • The OB likely has no clue of your individual insurance coverage. I met with a genetic counselor and she was astonished to learn my insurance was fully covering everything because she never runs into that. Just because many patients don't have great coverage for these optional tests doesn't mean that's the insurance standard.

Get the diagnostic codes and call your insurance to see what percentage your plan covers.
  • I had something very similar happen to me. I have alot of pre-existing health issues so my doctor recommended it, and I said okay. Right after I got the blood drawn she mentioned to me in passing that it was a very expensive test. I was like thanks for telling me now! I haven't gotten the bill yet, so I don't know how much my insurance covered.
  • I had it done for my first pregnancy and it was totally covered by insurance.
  • I had it done. I haven't got the bill yet, but was told that the Dr just needs to write that I'm Caucasian and it will be covered because of that.
  • I had it done and it was fully-covered. You could ask your doctor's billing office for the billing code and then call your insurance company to ask. This is actually a good practice any time you're unsure of coverage (preferably ahead of time ;)

I did talk to my insurance and it's not covered. But it's only about 550, not 3000. I still wish I was given a heads up beforehand (every friend of mine recently pregnant says their doctor gave them the option and told them it may not be covered. Most of them opted out). It was kind of just thrown in with all of the other routine tests with no explanation from anyone. Lesson learned.

ETA: I am Caucasian as well. The insurance company didn't mention anything about that.
