Prenatal vitamin question

edited January 2016 in September 2016 Moms
I'm taking the Rainbow Light Prenatal One vitamins. They are pretty good but they are like horse pills! Is there another one that's just as good but smaller? On days I feel I can't swallow them, I take 1 or 2 of my son's Natural Factors dino vitamins. I was also looking at different gummy vitamins but there's not much in them, vitamin wise.

What ones is everyone else taking?

Re: Prenatal vitamin question

  • I'm taking VitaFusion Prenatal Gummies. They're tasty and have B6 which I think is helping with my nausea. The only thing they don't have is iron.

  • I have a hard time swallowing large pills and I like the Spring Valley prenatal vitamins.  I get them at Walmart and they are only like $3-$4 for a bottle of 100.  You only take one a day.  They aren't huge and they are coated so they aren't chalky.

  • I use garden of life raw prenatal. I used them with DS as well. They come in capsules so if you need you can break it and poor the contents in water or juice.

  • Mine are horse pills too, so I've been cutting them in half when I don't think I can take the whole thing. Then I just take the other half a little later. Also works when I can't stomach them- the half is a little easier to digest.

  • I take Rainbow light too. They do make them in petites where you take 3 small ones instead of one ginormous one. I found them on Amazon last time I got them.

  • I take Avasia. They're big, but nothing I can't handle. They're pretty cheap, too, but now @createillumination has me craving the gummies! I guess it helps that I've been ODing on Sour Patch Kids to help with my MS
  • I take OLLY prenatals. They're gummy and they taste great!

  • @createillumination - That is what I take too! I love them, but since they are a gummy, they don't have iron and my NP was saying that it is important to have the iron, especially as the baby gets bigger. I feel fine with taking them for now, but I'm certain I'll either A) have to switch or B.) have to add an iron supplement later.
  • @PoodleDoodleOoo once you get to the second tri I would recommend adding floradix iron supplement instead of switching prenatals if you are happy with Smartypants. A lot of the prenatals with iron can cause constipation but floradix is one that is gentler on the system. (I'm an acupuncturist and I work with pregnant mamas if you are wondering where my info is coming from.)

@ElcaB they taste so yummy I have to stop myself from eating to many!
  • @createillumination - Thanks for the recommendation! I was just looking up iron supplements because, honestly, I love my smartypants a little too much. It's like a little morning and afternoon treat, they taste SO good! Haha. I'll check out floradix!
  • I'm taking the store brand of the vita-gummies. Your doc can recommend iron supplements based on your blood work if it becomes necessary down the road.

  • I was also taking those rainbow light prenatals, and ouch! I had such a hard time swallowing them!! I just switched to NatureMade Prenantal Multi plus DHA. I also noticed the rainbow light I had did not have DHA and it was recommended that I take it.

  • I am taking first response prenatal gummies plus an iron supplement. The areas where the gummies lack can easily be made up for by having a good diet.
  • I am also using the rainbow light prenatal one vitamins. They are large but i havent had a problem with them making me feel sick and i was really worried about that. I thought about taking the gummy prenatal but the added sugar really turned me off from those. Its hard enough to stay away from cookies and brownies and then take a gummy with added sugar, nah ill choke down the horse pill. lol
  • I'm taking the rainbow light horse pills as well. I just close my eyes, throw it as far back as I can into my mouth, and drink a gulp of water ( hoping I don't gag). I also take the rainbow light DHA, but it isn't too bad.
  • myKind organic (plant based). They're large, but go down quite easy. Ingredients include ginger and peppermint which I find really help minimize nausea.
  • I am also taking the Nature Made Prenatal + DHA. They are large but are pretty easy to get down

  • Oh I love smarty pants! I was taking them occasionally through when I was just breastfeeding. Now that I'm pregnant again I switched to nature made.

  • Is anyone NOT taking a prenatal with DHA in it?  My doctor asks me every time if my prenatal has DHA in it and every time I tell her no but that I am separately taking fish oil.  She never says there's anything wrong with that and yet brings it up every time I see her or her nurse, despite the fact that they have my current vitamins/medications at the top of my chart.  Is there something better about DHA in a prenatal vs. DHA in a separate fish oil pill?

  • I take Rainbow Light Prenatal Petite Mini Tablet.  I swear they help keep my nausea at bay.  The couple times I missed my pills I felt so nauseated.
Last time around I did a gummy because I couldn't handle anything else with my morning sickness.  I took iron separately in the second trimester.

I am taking Ortho Molecular Products Prenatal Complete with DHA.

It is four pills so it's a lot to take, but they don't make me sick like other vitamins.

  • I was also taking the rainbow light prenatal one vitamins but after finishing the bottle I realized I hated the smell and how big they were so I switched to best nest wellness prenatal. They are smaller, smell is barely noticeable.

  • I just bought these too and quickly realized the same thing about the size! I'm hesitant to switch, though, because I've yet to find one that compares in calcium, iron, magnesium, AND potassium, all of which I definitely want my body to have. I'll keep shopping around, but it looks like I'll be swallowing this one for a while! I may check out the petite ones somebody mentioned. Let us know what you decide to switch to!
  • I take Baby & Me Megafood prenatals and they are like horse pills too!!! But I deal with it since they are whole food based and all natural vitamins. I have to take 4 of them a day!! I freak myself out with ever swallow! Haha. Also mine don't have dha in them but I trust the brand and what it suggests I really need. :-)
  • @JennM205 - I take my DHA separately too. It's krill oil instead of fish oil, though. My nutritionist claims the krill is better due to less exposure of mercury, etc.
  • I've always used the gummy vitamins. I can't swallow the regular pills without gagging when I'm pregnant.

  • I read in a book that the best way to swallow the horse pills is to place it in the middle of your tongue, then take a big gulp and immediately tip you chin down. It sounds counterintuitive but it really works. I was pleasantly surprised!
  • I'm not a fan of vitamins - I think they just make expensive pee! That being said, I do take prenatals because of the folic acid. I think that's the main thing that you can't get readily and in the quantities you need from your diet. I asked my midwife at one point about different brands, if it really mattered, etc. and she said the most important thing to look for is the folic acid. Now, if you're taking it more as a multi-vitamin, then you will want to look at the specifics for each brand. I just got something affordable - Spring Valley Prenatal (I think I got it at WalMart, but can't remember).
  • I'm being a little weird/different in terms of my vitamin intake...I have a REALLY hard time swallowing big vitamins, and also am a pretty healthy eater in terms of eating my vitamins. I've been tracking/monitoring all of my food intake on "Cron-O-Meter" (you can adjust your vitamin/mineral rda intake...so I just adjusted everything to the rda itake for pregnancy)...it's been working really well. Most days I do have to take an iron and a folic acid supplement, but those are tiny little pills that I can easily sneak into a gulp of water without noticing.

I also take a liquid vitamin D supplement on days that I'm not able to get out into the sun. So far it's been great, and everything has been fine. I do have the Rainbow One pre-natals as a backup JUST IN CASE I'm not able to hit my vitamin goals on a particular day (aka...on the days when I'm just too nauseous to eat healthy!)

  • I only take one pill a day, and taking it at night has helped me a lot with nausea and "choking down the horse pills"
