Merconium in water

At the hospital! 40w5d Water broke this morning around 10ish, waited for contractions to start but they never did. Doc said head on to the hospital about 1:30. When I got here they said my water definitely broke and there was merconium in it. Gave me cytotec to ripen the cervix since I was only 1 cm and luckily that worked! Got my epidural and just seeing how I progress before they give me pitocin. Anyone had experiences with merconium? Just wondering what it means for baby when she is born

Re: Merconium in water

  • I had it. My water broke at home Tuesday morning and it was green with thick meconium in it. They brought the peds team in for delivery and I was told if he cried at birth he would bring all the meconium up and be fine, if he didn't cry they would intubate him briefly and suction it out. He came out screaming so they put him right on my chest and he has had no complications from it. Good luck!

  • Yes I had it in my water - she was born on her EDD but they brought in the NICU team because of it. Her cry was muffled so they did some suctioning for a few minutes - no big deal.
  • I had a c section but no complications from miconium. They had the NICU team in the OR just in case but we didn't need them luckily.
  • My experience was much the same. There was a respitory therapist in the delivery room when my daughter was born, and she looked her over real quick, but since she was crying everything was okay and the therapist left very shortly after she was born. No complications here!
  • He had it when they broke my water and he was born 7 hours later screaming and perfectly healthy.
  • I had it also but they didn't see it at first. Baby was born facing up and wasn't screaming when she came out. They had a team there to work on her before she even came out. They suctioned and did some work on her before I was able to hold her. It took her a little longer to transition, but once we had skin to skin, she came around and did just fine!

My mom also had this with me when I was born and everything turned out just fine as well! It is fairly common, so try not to worry!
  • Yes. DS had no issues. Came out, got a suction and screamed his beautiful head off. But I'm suprised they didn't talk to you about what this means at the time they told you about it.
My Dr said there are 2 scenarios. They either come out screaming of they come out and they don't scream. But both scenarios are ok. They'll have a special NICU team there in case more intervention than a suction is needed
