What the heck is up with the name of this thread too. I clicked on it thinking someone was doing an intro or changed profiles. Also; I think what you meant to say is "to see if they have started dilating yet" But I guess grammar and bad ideas don't mix either. Let your doctor do what you pay them for. You shouldn't be checking constantly. Just be patient, you'll know when you need to.
Not sure if it's different when you're pregnant or not, but I tracked cervical position, texture, and opening for my fertility treatments every day. I wasn't traveling to the RE to do it daily, so it was pretty much up to me. Whether you should do it yourself with a baby in there, I don't know, but checking your own cervix isn't that weird.
There are a lot of articles written on this. Checking your cervix pre pregnancy is helpful when trying to determine fertile windows etc. During pregnancy as long as you can reach, you ensure your hands and nails are clean and your water hasn't already broken ( increased risk of introducing infection) there is nothing wrong with checking your own cervix for dilation. Do a quick search.. checking your cervix for dilation.. a lot of articles and instructions will come up. Wear gloves if you want to reduce risk of accidently cutting or introducing bacteria. Good luck navigating in there
I checked my cervix while ttc so this doesn't seem that weird to me. You're not really supposed to keep checking while pregnant because of the risk of introducing bacteria. I'll probably check once I'm in labor to figure out timing for leaving for the hospital. I'd like to labor at home as much as possible and I'm hoping checking for dilation will help me do that.
Reactions on threads like this always make me laugh. Seriously, why is it ok for a doctor to stick their hand blindly up your vagina, but the idea of feeling it yourself is absurd? Wash your hands or wear a glove; that's all the protection they're using. You check it all the time when you're ttc or undergoing fertility treatments. Hell, most of us are still having sex, and I personally don't make my husband disinfect his penis right before we do it.
Perhaps if OP had started the thread with "I've done some research and thought this was interesting..." Or hell, even if she didn't decide to name the title 'bigbelly10' I might take it a little more seriously.
Even after googling and returning results from highly credible sources such as "sarahgreendoula.com" and "lifewithgremlins.com" I still think it's gonna be a hard pass for me.

if your doctor is "blindly" sticking his hand up your vagina you may want to consider switching doctors. They are doctors, they're not "blindly" doing anything- they know what they are looking/feeling for... That's why they went to medical school.

It's not recommended. I asked my OB at my appointment today after seeing some of the responses. There's a risk of infection and if you have no idea what you're doing you're most likely to cause yourself unnecessary Lin and potentially create an issue. So, that's Dr. Koch's answer. It's different than when you are TTC. Now there is a baby in there with very little protection from the outside world. Let your babies cook until they tell otherwise. If you were dilated to where it mattered you would know.
Lmao! BigBelly10 sounds like a pregnant truckers radio name. I won't even let my husband's peen around the kitty cat these days let alone go digging around for gold in there. I iz uncomfortable- and cervix checks are even more uncomfortable. The last thing I'm doing is extra credit ones on my own.

Um I let my doctor "blindly stick his hand up my vagina" because he is professionally trained to do just that and knows what to look for where I don't. That really is not blindly doing it, he is trained for it and takes the necessary precautions to keep the process safe and appropriate
My cervix started BLEEDING, like really bleeding, today at my appointment while my doctor was checking. If I had been poking around in there and that happened I'd probably freak out and think I was dying. I leave it up to my doctor, who knows what she's doing, to tell me what's going on in there.

I hope everything is okay! That sounds terrifying...

It was scary but my doctor reassured me that it was normal. It was so much! Since it has probably stopped, I just have some brown now. I'm NOT looking forward to bleeding for (possibly) weeks after labor! I forgot how sucky it is!

I am not looking forward to it either. Kind of scared actually. It weird my period never bothers me and I'm not afraid of a c-section or anything like that, but the thought of bleeding after birth and healing is terrifying.
I don't think it's crazy to be familiar with your body. I did cervix checks while TTC. What I DO think is crazy is that people think they can (or actually can) reach it while 40wks pregnant. I can't even tie my damn shoes!
Also, I personally don't really see the benefit of numerous cervix checks in general, MD/MW or otherwise. And encouraging it to people who don't know about the proper hygiene of it is just irresponsible. If someone wants to check, they can do the research and talk to their doctor, not go off of random people saying its NBD.

While reading this thread to my husband he goes- "I'm no doctor but I'll check your cervix" while flashing his toothy bedroom grin.
That's what got us into this mess.
Sounds like me and my husband. Pretty much once a day we have a "that's what got us into this mess" comment. He's 7 years older than I am but you'd think he's a 17 year old with his dirty comments lol

I asked my husband if he could wipe my butt for me...he said no
Baby wipes are my friends.
