Thrush

I used the search function, but nothing touched on what I was looking for. My almost 6 week old was diagnosed with thrush on Wednesday and we started nystatin yesterday. She has been so fussy and upset and generally inconsolable. Yesterday she had a stretch of 6 hours where she slept for a few minutes here or there. Did anyone else experience this with their child? Any advice?

Thanks!

I knew someone had posted a thread about this not too long ago.  While I didn't read all of the responses, this may be helpful to you.  Sorry, if it is not. =)  I myself, have not had this experience.

  • We are 4 days into nystatin with my almost 4 week old it took about 24 hours before he started to act like he felt better and it actually looked worse for 1-2 days before it started to look better. I caught the thrush in DS early though and got a we day appointment for the RX.
  • I started eating more probiotic rich foods to since I'm bf-ing.
  • After reading this I am paranoid. My LO started pulling off my boob while nursing a while ago while fussing. Hes a high needs baby my little one (gas, has to be held, refuses pacifier etc etc) so I didn't think much of it. He no longer wants to eat around the clock but I chucked it up to him being older and past his recent growth spurt.

Aside from fussiness when eating, I do see now his tongue is a little white! My nipple don't burn or itch but some times I do feel some sharp pain feeling deep in the breat when he nurses (I say feeling because its more of a pull than pain.)

Ah so paranoid. How were you diagnosed? Did they swab your babys mouth? Googling has made my paranoia worse and his 2 month appt isn't for another week and a half.
  • @angelicac06 I was paranoid too after googling thrush a couple weeks ago after noticing my LO's tongue was a tad white and having pain in my breasts. However, after reading a lot on KellyMom, I ruled out thrush. For me personally, I had to go back to the basics and make sure LO was latching properly. Since putting more emphasis on this, the pain has subsided, so I think I was just getting lazy about the latches and that's what caused the pain. And I just chalk up the little bit of white on his tongue to residue from breast milk/formula.

  • Ugh I'm a week into treatment for this...both myself and the baby. I had such intense burning after feeding I thought I was going to die...I cried every time I finished feeding her. I got a dose of difilcan for me and nystatin for her... It significantly improved within 48 hours...I didn't notice much change in my LO
  • I know I posted about this before so I don't want to sound like a broken record. But for those of you that are having a hard time beating thrush, I recommend you try gentian violet. I got a bad case of thrush with DD and the Rx meds didn't work. We were only able to kick it with gentian violet. It's messy as hell and awkward to paint your nipples purple ... But it worked so quickly!

Here is a good thread on it:
    https://forums.llli.org/showthread.php?22376-How-do-you-use-Gentian-Violet
  • @Murphyer so is the gentian violet over the counter, I'd heard of it but assumed it was a prescription?
  • @TomekiaB yes, it's over the counter but can be tough to find. I ordered it on amazon.

    https://www.amazon.com/Humco-Gentian-Violet-Topical-Solution/dp/B000QTG3ME

Per my LC, I used a Qtip to paint it on my nipples after a feeding. Then I sat around my house with my boobs out in order for the nipples to get air. You then feed the baby and the GV will then treat their mouth. I had results immediately and all thrush was gone in 3 days.

It is very messy.... I recommend latex gloves and putting Vaseline on LO's lips, chin and cheeks to limit the staining. But your nipples and LO's mouth will be purple for days. If you have an open wound, the GV can tattoo your skin. It will also stain all fabrics. With using gloves and Vaseline, we didn't have any crazy staining issues.
  • @murphyver I just ordered some from amazon. I will make sure I wear black and use disposable BF pads as long as I'm purple. How long did you wait before you fed baby (I pump and BF)? I am hoping that the nystatin works for DS and that the violet will just help me not give thrush back to him.
  • I waited about an hour after application and BFing. And spent as much time "airing" out as possible. With the Vaseline the only staining she had was in her mouth and if faded pretty quick. good luck! I hope it works as well for you as it did for us!
  • Ugh the irony, I woke up with my nipples midly burning. I called the pediatrician and sent prescription for Nystatin for my LOs mouth and apply to my nipples while I called my OB tomorrow (it was after hours.) It doesn't hurt to nurse. Believe it or not ot helps with the itch as well! I just feel so bad for him! He clearly fusses eating now when he used to love it. :( Thankfully there are no visible sores in his mouth or diaper area as of yet.

After much research I'm skeptical of Nystatin because many women state it hasn't worked for them and I guess Diflucan isn't given right away unless Nystatin doesn't work because of how hard it is on the babys liver. I won't even get into what I read about the GV. I don't want to worry the moms whom already used it. Ugh this sucks. I kept breaking my head on how this could have happened! I have such good hygiene. There hasn't been a day that I haven't showered and replace my breast pads daily and thats when it clicked. My breast pads! I leak A LOT. My nipples sitting in that moisture had to have been it! I have to use them every day because if its not the pads it will be my clothes so either way. Except now I will change them multiple times per day. Now I am going to spend the evening washing all my bras, nurisng tanks, towels etc. And boiling all bottles and nips despite using the microwave sterilizer everyday because again im paranoid like that.

Arg im so upset. I will add this to the things they don't tell you list

Make sure you are getting lots of probiotics. It's not always about cleanliness. Yeast cultures move in when there isn't enough good bacteria in your system.

    @kelseyofanne will do, thank you.

It could even be assiciated to diet. sugar or white carbs are very high in yeast. Genital yeast infections are common after/during pregnancy and it could have started there (subtly without you knowing until you have nipple sensitivity). My dd has no symptoms but my breasts are itchy and stinging on the inside. Rinsing with vinegar water is helping me a lot but it's not as quick as other treatments. I am also reducing my sugar intake, which has definitely increased with all the guests bringing treats when they come to visit new baby!
  • Joining the thrush train after getting over mastitis and a million clogged ducts. Yay! Not :/ thankfully baby isn't showing any signs so his pediatrician wants to wait and see before treating him. My nipples are bright red, itching like crazy, my let-down is stingy and painful but otherwise my OB called it a mild case. This breastfeeding business sucks.

Totally feeling the exact same thing. And I only have had all of the problems you've listed in my right boob. My left has had no clogged ducts, no mastitis and no thrush and is providing tons of milk! Wth! Sooo annoying and soooo ready to call it quits but after having a breast reduction and wondering if I would even HAVE milk or be able to breastfeed at all, I want to be grateful that I can say I have these problems to begin with! I make sure I whimper extra loud when the hubby is home so he feels good and sorry for me. I find that helps lol.
  • So it doesn't make sense to me that the pediatrician didn't want to treat him? He's not showing signs but if he is harboring the yeast in his mouth couldn't we just pass it back and forth? His regular ped wasn't in today and won't be back until Monday.
  • So I was prescribed a compounded cream with 2 different antifungals(1 is nystatin), 1 antibacterial and a anti-inflammatory. It was very expensive and because the pharmacy compounded it, my insurance wouldn't cover it. However I was still able to use my company ins FHA card. In theory it sounds perfect so I'll let yall know how it works.

@sarahgn Bf does suck! Its very strange the pediatrician didn't prescribe anything. If you treat yours and he has it despite not showing signs, your lo will just keep giving it back to you. Is his tongue white? My pediatrician took wooden applicatior stick to check and verified there was thrush ALONG with milk residue.

Sorry I think I was suppose to @Gingermom15

    I changed my username :)
But no, his tongue isn't white unless it's right after eating. No discomfort eating, either.
  • I am so paranoid of thrush. My one month old is on antibiotics so I've upped my probiotic intake. (I eat 2 activia yogurts a day.) Does any one have experience of this helping?
  • @gingermom thats good!

@chaelainev I heard that helps! I was starting to eat it everyday twice a day for different benefits lol but I stopped when I gave up dairy to help my LOs stomach and gas issues. I might try one a day and see how his stomach reacts.
  • @chaelainev yogurt typically only has 1-3 strains of good bacteria or probiotics. But foods like kefir, kimchi, natural sauerkraut etc have more from what i have read so I'd consider adding a variety of probiotic rich foods. I started taking an acidophilus supplement too it was one of two recommended by kellymom or alphamom for probiotics for thrush (and the only one in my tiny grocery store).

I was contemplating the baby probiotics but they are only advertised for colic (Gerber soothe drops). Thoughts, anyone try it for thrush?
  • I love my Gerber sooth drops....do you have to get the one with probiotics it has made a world of difference for us!
