Snowstorm in NY on due date

Is anyone else concerned about the snowstorm forecast to hit the mid-Atlantic? I'm due on Sunday and have a tricky drive to the hospital. We live in Brooklyn and would have to traverse up to NYU Langone. That's a difficult drive w traffic on a good day. Anyone else making preparations? Hotel reservations? Am I crazy??

Re: Snowstorm in NY on due date

  • I'm in DC and we're supposed to get hit pretty hard too. I'm not due till the 31st, but I'm still pretty worried about this storm. On the brighter (??) side, there hopefully won't be too many other cars on the road. I don't have much of a plan other than basically putting myself on bed rest for the weekend in the hopes that I make it through

  • In CT right outside of NYC, due in 9 days, and getting a little nervous, however I also don't really trust meteorologists, so we'll see how bad it really ends up being. Luckily, we're only 10 minutes from the hospital, so we're hoping that we can just drive very slowly even in a bad storm and still get to the hospital within 45 minutes and have it not be an issue...Being in the city, is there any way to use the subway for as much of the trek as possible? I know being underground in labor is also not ideal, but maybe you can go part of the way underground out of the snow, and then hail a cab/Uber the rest of the way? Is there a friend's place you can crash at for the weekend just in case, if you're really nervous? Or a hospital closer by as a backup if you can't get out of Brooklyn?

  • Due today. in the snow belt as well. We will not hesitate to go to the hospital as soon as I feel labor pains/contractions. GOod luck!

  • I am very lucky, I live in NY but on a good day I am 5 minutes from the hospital. It's so close it's where DH works and comes home everyday for lunch. Plus it's in the main road my neighborhood is off of. So really just have to go down one road.

  • Due Friday in PA. I'm super worried too. Scared we won't get to the hospital in time once I realize these contractions I've been having for weeks are actually the real thing. We also have to get my daughter to my parents before we can go to the hospital. Fortunately my parents live 7mins from us and 10 mins from the hospital so we aren't far, but they are saying at least 10-16 inches of snow for us. That makes things tricky. I HATE driving/riding in the snow. It gives me panic attacks. The doc stripped my membranes today so hopefully that will at least put me in labor before the snow starts. If not, this little man better hold on until Monday!
  • I'm due tomorrow and we're supposed to get hit, too. I live 30 min from my hospital AND it's DH's weekend to work (he has the 4wd) so I'm a bit concerned. Statistically there's only a 5% chance you will have your baby on your due date so I'm trying to keep that in mind. That said, I'd err on the side of immediately heading to the hospital if you have regular contractions. Better to be sent home than have your baby at home (unless that's your plan) or on the side of the road!

  • I'm due Friday and I'm in the bullseye for snow. We are 45 mins from hospital. I have an appt tomorrow so I will see what my doc says.
  • Thank you, ladies!! It's crazy that it's been such a mild winter and now this!! On the positive side the storm could help out labors!! I ended up booking a cheap hotel within walking distance from the hospital, but if the forecast changes I can cancel it. I feel partially crazy to have booked it, but maybe that's better than fully crazy thinking about worst case snow scenario for the next few days. My DH thinks I'm nuts, btw. Good luck to all of you!! Stay safe and be careful. Watch, now it will be 45 degrees this weekend!
  • I'm in the Annapolis area and have a hotel reservation for the whole weekend. We're 40 minutes from the hospital and by then I'll be a week overdue. You gotta do what makes you happy and comfortable!
  • @clrettaliata I think it's great you got a hotel - you can relax and think of it as a little getaway.
  • For anyone that is worried about the storm, I'd prepare for the worst case scenario and have an emergency bag in the car. You'll want things like non perishable food and water, blankets, sterile scissors, something to tie the cord, bulb syringe, flashlights, flares, ect. Just incase you do get stuck and end up having the baby in the car.

I'm a worry wart and would want to errors on the side of caution though. Good luck to everyone and I hope you all make it through safely!
  • My Dr told me this morning that she expects me to go into labor any day now and since the hospital I'm supposed to be delivering at is the closest one to our house, not to even bother trying to drive in if I go into labor this weekend, but just call an ambulance. She also said in situations like this, they won't send me home if I get there earlier than they normally want, so it's ok to call as soon as I'm sure it's the real thing.
  • @clrettaliata want to split the hotel room? Also a BK FTM delivering at NYU! :) I'm actually not too worried about getting there but my parents are going to come once I'm admitted and I don't want them driving once this storm starts.

I'm hoping that babe gets here next week so I can have one last weekend just me and DH!
  • I'm outside Pittsburgh, and it's supposed to start snowing tonight around 7pm and not stop until close to 11am tomorrow (my due date).  Definitely freaking out a little bit.  We're a good 25 minutes from the hospital with clear roads.

  • @clrettaliata Did you guys ride out the storm? We ended up taking the subway into Manhattan once they announced the travel ban in case we needed to call an ambulance. LO decided to stay warm inside though - and we're back at home now.
  • As a bystander on the west coast, I'm also curious to know what you guys did during the storm... any babies born?
  • @l4rk There was 1 born in one of the facebook groups I'm in, but it seems she lived somewhere where they were great about plowing, and she was in and out of the birthing center in 7 hours total!

I spent all of yesterday sitting still and hoping she'd stay put (although I had several plans to get to the hospital if need be...it wasn't as bad where I am as it was in many other areas), and now today I am suddenly COMPLETELY over being pregnant and want her out NOW, haha.

  • I also spent pretty much all of yesterday sitting still and trying to relax.  Now I'm insanely restless and really, really want to clean the whole house.  DH wants me to make it until the end of the week and keeps yelling at me to go sit down and relax.  I snuck in some bathroom cleaning while he was out shoveling though.
