Kidney stone!

Last night I went to the ER for back pain. Worst. Pain. Ever!

After several hours I was discharged with "It's probably a small stone that's about to pass or has passed."

The pain went away suddenly on the way home. (Meds weren't much help.)

Wouldn't I know if I passed it? Doesn't it hurt, or does it only really hurt men when they pass? Will the pain return? Any stories or suggestions or thoughts on what I can expect would be so greatly appreciated!

Re: Kidney stone!

  • Ouch. Never had one, but I hear they're awful. FX you've passed it, and the pain doesn't return!

  • I had one 2 years ago. I never felt it pass or noticed it and I had been using the strainer for 2 days. Once the pain in your back is gone, you really shouldn't feel much more. Unless it was a huge stone. I assume they didn't do a ct scan so you wouldn't know the size.

I really feel your pain. They are definitely not what I would call a good time.

  • I feel your pain. I've had them twice, the last time when I was pregnant. I neve knew when I passed them except for finding the stones in the strainer. I'm pretty sure the pain is from the stone moving from the kidney to the bladder. It really is the worst pain. I found that warm baths helped but not much else. Hoping you pass it soon!
  • The pain usually stops when it gets into the bladder, you may not ever know it passes. Drink lots of water and cut back on calcium and hopefully you won't have any more. I had 4 with my last and had to have stints put in bc they were so big. Let me tell you, if you can handle a kidney stone, birth is a breeze!
  • Also, the stick on heat patches or hot hands packs on your back can help the pain
  • So sorry. I had one a few years back. The pain was so bad I fell to the floor with my pants around my ankles and called my bf in to take me to the hospital. You probably won't actually feel it pass and it gets better when you do. Good luck to you. It's the worst. And I agree with @sdnybrk, cut back on the calcium. That's what my doc told me to do. Good luck to you.
  • Oh man...I've never had one, but I've been with my mom when she was dealing with one, and I could tell she was in some serious pain. And she's a tough cookie when it comes to pain tolerance. She told me it was worse than childbirth ("at least you get a break from contractions," she said) so at least you know going into birth that it probably won't be the worst pain you've ever felt (maybe?)...

  • Thank you ladies! I think, from what you've said, the worst is behind me. I've given birth twice and I agree this was worse. :(
