Avoiding Receipts?

Is anyone else having problems avoiding receipts? Cashiers and delivery drivers tend to stick them directly into your hand and look at you like you're a crazy person when you jump back and say, "No receipt, please."

Then, even if I manage to avoid those, I reach into a bag of groceries and there's a receipt or I reach into my husband's pockets (while sorting laundry) and there's another receipt.

Can't we just go paper-free already??!?

  • Is this just a random bitch?

Receipts don't bother me, I guess. I'd rather take the slip of paper and toss it in the recycle bin than give everyone and their mom my email address so that I can be constantly deleting receipts from there.

  • receipts are necessary for when goods and services are exchanged. Can't do business without them. You need to keep a record of car maintenance and they are proof of purchase. Very useful come tax season and key in managing and maintaining your finances.  Toss them when you don't need them  and ask for electronic receipts when they are available to you.

  • I just heard this recently. BPA is apparently high in receipts. I don't avoid them still. I didn't really think to avoid now that I'm pregnant (probably still won't)

  • Im kinda the opposite, i get pissed if i dont get a receipt. I was a cashier and cashier manager several years ago so its just a given for me. You cant return items without receipts at most stores. I just take all my receipts for the entire year and just put them in a bath n body works bag. I may need them sometime. If not, oh well i know where they all go.
  • Sorry for the head-scratcher, not a random gripe:

Receipts contain BPA and apparently handling them while pregnant is bad. A friend was saying that it's why receipts turn black when left in the sunlight, they're filled with some nasty stuff.

I just don't know how to avoid receipts. They're everywhere and people put them directly in your hand.

  • Did ya miss the part where is says to take it all with a grain of salt because it’s enough to drive us all crazy ?

Just ask them to put it in the bag if you're concerned.

  • I am more conscious of washing my hands, I'm sure I'll be fine.
  • Anyone from D13 remember Jimmy Johns?? This is right up there.

  • Well shoot. I guess I shouldn't have eaten all those receipts this week. Oops.
The BPA from the receipts are absorbed through your skin.

If no one else is worried about it, it's probably not a big deal (especially since a lot of you already have healthy babies at home) -- it was just getting frustrating for me because I've been trying to avoid them but people tend to just thrust them at me (usually pushing them directly into my hand) even when I've said "no receipt, please" or "put it in the bag" (which, actually doesn't help that much because I still have to reach into the bag to take things out and there's the receipt).

I literally had to jump back at one point yesterday because (even though my hands/arms were completely full) the cashier tried to shove a receipt in my hand.

  • People have been handling receipts for a long time. .. and eating soft cheese (it's america. If you buy it in a store, it's pasteurized) and lunch meat, etc. You're going to drive yourself insane. Don't overdo it, and I'm sure you'll have a happy, healthy baby. Just take the damn receipt please, or leave it in the bag when you get home. those poor cashiers are probably wondering what they did wrong!
  • What a bizarre thing to stress over.  You could always have everything delivered to your house.  I'm pretty sure the statements inside are just regular old paper.

You know I actually remember reading in a "Preparing to get pregnant" type of book that receipts have BPA in them and thus are risky, but really even if that is true just wash your hands and you will be fine.

Don't remember the exact title of the book, it was french book... maybe that is why, we french people tend to over freak out about everything xD.

  • Well shoot. I am a teller at a Credit Union. I handle receipts all day, 5 days a week. I'm screwed.

  • I like being in the know, whether it means I'll be avoiding touching receipts or not, I like knowing about the BPA thing. So thanks, OP :) Everyone is entitled to their own level of precaution so if you want to avoid receipts, I support you.

  • I heard about the BPA in receipts, just add it to the list of sh*t to worry about! I think as long as you wash your hands frequently it should be ok.

  • It is going to be a long pregnancy if you're avoiding everything. I honestly didn't even know about the "receipt" thing until your post, but even if I did, I don't think I'd lose it over being handed a receipt. Just practice common sense hygiene and you'll be fine..

  • If BPA is the issue, then I would think drinking out of plastic bottles is more of a concern (or eating out of plastic containers/cans). Regular hand washing (which should be part of every person's hygiene) should easily solve the receipt problem.

I still eat/drink out of plastic occasionally, but I'll probably consider avoiding it from here on out. I'm a firm believer of not living in a bubble, but I didn't really know much about the BPA risk until this post prompted me to google.

  • I think BPA is the least of most peoples worries...its in all sorts of things but thankfully its being used in less and less things. If I were going to be legitimately concerned about things I would be more concerned about the unnecessary chemicals in everyday products we use around the home. I make my own toothpaste, lotions and cream, laundry detergent and household cleaners. I do this because it is the one thing I do have control over that makes our lives healthier. If you are so concerned about BPA or other chemicals  focus on what you have control over and change the things you can...in the mean time just take the receipt and let the person standing opposite of you do their JOB!
