TTC After a Loss

When to stop EPO when unsure of ovulation date

Hello,
I've got a 31 day cycle and my hubby and I have been ttc this month. It's my first month of using OPK wands and I take EPO. However, my opk's have been mostly negatives and two positives it seems (both positives being a few days+ apart). I hear you should stop EPO after ovulation which I want to do but idk if I've already ovulated or not thanks to my not knowing a whole lot about opk's and stuff. Plus, I've had a ton of ovulation or possible preggo symptoms lately (fatigue, tingly tender breasts and cramps like cray). Blah! Help? Thinking I'm going to play it safe and just stop the EPO for now til I know...

Ps. If I'm not preggo this month, I am going to just plan on getting the opk tests that just straight up tell you if you're pos opk or not instead of all this guessing haha

  • Have you been temping? That is the best way to know if/when you ovulate. So many things can affect when you ovulate (e.g., stress, travel...). And early pregnancy symptoms often look like PMS because they're both caused by a rise in progesterone (which is after you ovulate - so you may not be pregnant but you may have ovulated...).

A quick google of basal body temperature will likely shed some light on what I'm referring to if you haven't already read up on it - if you prefer a book - Taking Control of Your Fertility is great - and if you prefer an app - I'm loving the educational material on Fertility Friend (plus you get VIP membership for free for 30 days - so you could go in, get the information, and get out if you want).

  • @catiecatp thank you! I will pry try temping next month if were unsuccessful this month! I used to temp actually and would've this month but my thermometer is missing (will pry go out and get a new one as i cannot find it). It would be super helpful otherwise!

  • What cycle day are you on at this point? I would play it safe and stop the EPO. I personally tried EPO in the past and it majorly messed up my cycle. I took it without reading too much and when I saw how it could mess with my estrogen I stopped. Are you taking it for the CM benefits or do you have a hormonal imbalance? If for the CM, I have found that my best bet was drinking a TON of water.

Also, as PP suggested if you are going to take supplements that impact you hormonally I would suggest temping, that at least gives you some insight into when you should be stopping them etc. so you won't have to stress. Good luck!
  • @BornReady I'm taking it for CM benefits monitored by my midwife:) also I'm on cycle day 16,with my second pos opk being today (bd'ing tonight is plan). So now that I know I'm ovulating for sure I'll pry take a smaller dosage and be done tomorrow or next day :)

  • @mrsbenjamindaniel Excellent, glad it sorted itself out for you! I hope I didn't come off as too much of an EPO alarmist, that stuff just freaked me out when I took it and the negative impact it had on me. Good luck!
  • @bornready and @mrsbenjamindaniel - I think the warning and cautions are absolutely a good idea - there is so much variability in the quality of supplements and data/knowledge about supplements that I think it is wise to take things under the care of a qualified practitioner if at all possible. We also need to be as educated as possible about these things because some practitioners clearly have a bias in their recommendations, or weight evidence differently than we do.

As an aside, I work at a university - if y'all have a question about a particular study I can likely access the primary research. Not a blanket statement to say I'll send you copyrighted limited access materials (I'll get in trouble if I say that), but if I have time I can skim the information for you. I have first hand experience that research gets skewed in media reports - and I've seen that skew can happen as early as the university's press release...

  • I totally agree with the precautions ladies! Very caring and kind of you, not alarmist :) esp since I've miscarried twice this past year. Better to be safe under the supervision of a doc or midwife
