Slight fever- stressing need support please

DS (8wks) has had a fever on and off today. It hasn't broken 100 so I know it's not urgent but it still has me stressing. His pedi said I could give him some infants Tylenol for now and to keep checking it. We're hoping to get squeezed in for an appointment tomorrow but I won't know until the morning. He seems fine other than being a little more sleepy than usual. I'm still really worried though. Any stm been through this? Any words of wisdom ?

  • FTM, but a couple weeks ago my son had a temperature of 100.3 and I was told as long as it wasn't 100.4 not to worry. Of course I still worried about it, but after a little bit it started going down. He spent almost 24 hours at around 99.9, but acted pretty much normal. Never turned into anything other than a day of being a bit warm.

  • Mine didn't quite have a fever last week, but elevated temp, after being over stimulated a big chunk of the day. I gave her a lukewarm bath and did skin to skin right after, brought her temp down to normal. Sounds like you're doing everything right, hang in there!
  • ^^ This. Is he acting normal? At this point it's more on behavior (including input/output) when they run a little warm. If there's anything 100.4 then of course it's an immediate pedi call, but until then monitor his behavior and how he looks.
  • Thank you! I am definitely keeping a watchful eye on him.
  • ^ what they said. No need to worry until it gets above 100.4.
A bath and then skin to skin is a great way to regulate their temp.
My daughter always ran warmer. I've honestly never taken my son's temp because I've never been concerned about it.
  • Just wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you and LO!! Hope his temp returns to normal soon!
  • LO had a temp of 99.9 at 2 weeks old. Pedi said its not a fever until 100.4. No worries mama!

  • Honestly I am shocked your pedi said yo give your baby infant tylenol for a temp under 100 and at just 8 weeks old. The advice of all the pps is what I was told by my pedi to follow. Also, I you can cover your baby in a warm blanket, that worked for us.

Hope your LO feels better soon.

We had to take my son to emerg a couple weeks ago when he had a temp of 103!!! They checked urine and got his temp down with Tylenol and the dr finally came to the conclusion he was "starting" to get sick and there was really nothing we could do but keep his temp down and if anything changed or we couldn't keep the temp lowered to come back. We spent the next couple days intermittently having to give him Tylenol and ibprofen, (he was 11lbs 7.5 ounces then)but it eventually just went away and he has been fine since. It's a scary thing but keep checking his temp, if he's super lethargic and not wetting his diapers, take him to emerg :)
  • My daughter has had two colds so far, both with congestion and fever. Our doc told us that a rectal temperature under 100.4 isn't a fever, 100.4-101.4 can be treated with a lukewarm bath, skin to skin, and/or tylenol. If her fever reaches 101.4 the doctor wants a call and would like to see her. If it continues to rise and is combined with signs of dehydration, trouble breathing, changes in feeding/elimination she wants us to go to emerge. Ask your doctor to clarify the "what ifs" with you ... I'm a worrier and having a plan helps ease my anxiety a lot!

She also told me not to focus on the fever so much as the changes in behaviour, as a baby can be very sick and not develop a fever, or can have a fever and be just fine.
