Nursing pads?

So you think I'd know - I nursed my two older kids forever - but since it's been seven years since I last nursed, I've forgotten & there may be a lot of different products now anyway!

I liked washable cloth pads because they were more comfy, softer and  not plastic-y.  But they were pretty bulky & you could see the stupid circle through my bra & clothes.

I liked the thinness of the disposables, and not having to wash, but hated the waste, and honestly I got itchy and it seemed like a really good way to promote thrush.

So, anyone with a better memory and/or more recent experience have great recommendations?

Thanks!

Re: Nursing pads?

  • I used these but I didn't leak a lot.  I don't think they showed too much and helped keep my nipples in check.

  • I used the washable ones when I was at home and didn't care about the visible lumps/bumps. I used disposable when I was out and wanted a smoother look.

This made me remember how much breast milk I had everywhere. Why oh why much we leak so much!!?
  • I used bamboobies when I was out and about and I'm at least pretty sure they didn't show through my bra. I had some additional cow print ones I found on Amazon that worked just as well but were definitely bulkier.

  • I loved the bamboobies ones, you could see them if I wore just a nursing tank but under a bra they weren't visible. Plus they didn't stick, which can be painful in the beginning.

Oh my Lord, nursing tanks.  Totally forgot about those!  Man, I'm practically a first time mom again!  That's what you get for waiting nine years between kids:)  Thanks for all the tips.

Right! My DS will be 8 by the time baby arrives. Everything is different. I feel like a FTM again! I think I am going to try these one : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001SMBRWO/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=159YVDGMJUMUZ&coliid=IRI0T25D39JPT
    and fabric ones.
  • Oh man.  I leaked a ton.  I never understood how anyone could use the washable ones.  I needed to plastic as a liner to not go through my shirt (and it still managed to get through sometimes.  I would touch a boob and milk would fly out.  I just used the Target generic brand of disposables, because I went through them like crazy (sorry again to the guy that emptied our trash at work).

  • Oh man, forgot all about this (and it's only been a couple of years for me).  No advice but thanks to everyone who has responded.  I like the idea of non-disposable ones, though I never sought them out first time around.  Gosh, I recall leaking like a faucet.  Haha- these parts of having a newborn that you forget about.
  • I tried the washable ones, it leaked so much they weren't practical for me. I ended up getting them from Amazon on subscribe ad save because it was so much cheaper than at the store.

  • Bamboobies are my favorite! I didn't discover them until I had been nursing for awhile last time and I only had a couple pairs that I got during their freebies promotions but I have several pairs already and plan on getting more before baby arrives.

  • I believe they are from the motherhood store, but I got myself some nursing/maternity sports bras last time. The material is thick, and so I didn't have to worry if nursing pads showed through. Also they are so comfortable, and have a bit of give for when milk comes in and etc.

  • I much prefer the cloth ones. I feel they work better and aren't as awful.

  • Interesting thread as a FTM. Sort of made me panic though and wonder if I should buy pads now to have on hand just in case. As a teacher I'd be mortified if I was leaking at school and had no way to hide it. If you start leaking, is it pretty much constant or is it intermittent?

Also, found this article helpful for any other FTMs. https://m.newkidscenter.com/When-Do-Your-Breasts-Start-Leaking-During-Pregnancy.html
  • @arteduc8 I never really leaked per se, during pregnancy.  Maybe the very rare drop or two, and if I squeezed, a bit would come out.  Most leaking was when my milk first came in and I was GIGUNDO, and my body was still adapting to supply/demand, and it was mostly triggered by a baby (mine or someone else's) crying.  In those early days, I was sort of Niagra Falls-esque.

After a few months, I was able to control it by putting pressure on my nipples with my forearm.  I definitely didn't need the nursing pads for the entire time I nursed my older two.  That being said, there's clearly a wide range of experiences.  I suppose you could buy a pack of pads to have just in case - what's the harm?
  • I just bought some on Amazon last night after reading the leaky boob post! I got a small pack of fabric and put one large pack of disposable and one larger pack of fabric ones on an Amazon registry. I just got the $5 add-on item version for now. I want to use all fabric but in some of the reviews on Amazon moms mentioned that the first month or two is crazy enough you don't want to worry about leaking and cleaning extra clothes, and sometimes the disposables hold more fluid. So I figure one big pack will be enough for me to get started and get into the routine, then soon after I can add in my fabric ones and washing. I'm thinking about doing something similar (or a mix?) with diapers bc we want to use cloth for that too.
