So many questions

So I have an induction scheduled for Saturday & I'm extremely nervous. I never thought it would come to this, and now I'm freaking out. I was told to come in to the hospital at 7am & I'd be given something to ripen my cervix. Then if it wasn't progressing she said we'd break my water and do the pitocin. She said more than likely I'd deliver Sunday. Do you have experience with any of this stuff? Is it as scary as it all sounds? If you were induced, could you share how it went?

I asked to be induced with my second and third baby. I was already past EDD and asked because of their size. I have a history of delivering big babies and wanted to make sure they did not get too big/not fit. With both I chose a date and they gave me a time to come in. But both times they did let me know the induction would only happen if they had a open bed. With my third baby I arrived at 7 pm but did not get put into a room until hours later when it was already the am. With both I was immediately put on pitocin and they broke my water (for me they did not break it because I was not progressing). I was in labor give or take 2 hours with each baby. I actually had fast easy deliveries and no complications. I progressed quickly and personally contractions did not come any harder than when I went into labor naturally with my first. I did not get an epidural. Every experience is different and every woman/baby reacts differently to inducements. There is a higher risk of having a c-section and complications if baby is just not ready. I did like that I had a set date and was able to prepare for my babies to arrive. I have heard many horrible exoeroejced from other moms. I've heard some ended in an emergency c-section or had crazy long labors lasting over 24 hours etc. Don't stress so much,Good luck Hun.

  • I was induced January 7th. It was totally unexpected due to high blood pressure and not at all what I wanted for this birth. That being said, it was not nearly as terrifying as I had made it out to be in my head. I went in at 8 PM to get checked in. They started a Foley bulb at 9 PM, and I slept for a while as it was similar to what early labor would be like. At 1AM my foley bulb was taken out and I was started on pitocin and antibiotics because I was GSB positive (I had an allergic reaction to the antibiotics, but I'm special and it was expected. Quickly fixed with Benadryl). I slept for an hour or two because of the Benadryl. I progressed steadily to a 7 at which point they broke my water at 11AM. Not going to lie to you, that's when it started getting really painful. I didn't want pain meds, but after an hour and a half of transition I was about done. I asked for IV pain meds at 8cm, but in the 5 minutes it took for them to get them in the room I was already at 10cm and ready to push. It only took about 15 minutes to see our sweet boy :) So, it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be, my only advice would be to ask for pain meds early if you want them. Good luck!
  • I was induced last Saturday. I am a frm who was overdue by 4 days. When I went in I was only dialated to 1cm and effaced about 60%. They only intended to do a cervadil for 12 hours but decided to add the bulb (can't remember what it's called)...they started this at 10pm Friday night. My water broke on its own around 3am. Before that point, my pain level was tolerable, from 3 to 6am I went from 1 cm to 8 and my pain level was intense. I was given an epidural shortly after and waited for hours to finish dialating.

Once they said I was ready, I pushed for 2 hours. My baby ended up being 9lbs 14oz and I did end up tearing some. He was only predicted at 8 lbs. So overall..from induction to birth it was 18 hours.

My only complication was the epidural. I reacted very strong to it and my blood pressure bottomed out and they couldn't find baby s heartbeat it was so low. They were quickly able to make everything ok by changing my position and giving me oxogyn.

    Good Luck!
  • I was induced starting December 23 on cervadil - it's a uncomfortable thin cardboard tampon type thing. They insert it into your vagina and you are only allowed to get up to pee... After 12 hours of that it didn't work. I only thinned out a little ( at the beginning I was dilated to 1cm my cervix was super thick) I wasn't dilated any more.
Be aware the cervadil causes period like cramps/ contractions..
So- I did another 12hrs of cervadil- and was sent to labor and delivery at 5am December 25th where they started pitocin at this point my cervix was thin.
I was able to sleep and pee and all sorts of awesome things (besides eat or drink) I had minor contractions while I slept...until 2:30 that day.... I woke up from my nap in tears I hurt so bad seriously. I got my epi by 3pm I tried my damnedest to hold out as long as possible but I couldn't. I was in fetal position crying.
After the epi I was good.
They put the cath in about 3:45/4:00
About 7pm my doctor came in and checked my cervix I was dilated to a 3/4 and my doctor was ESTATIC - she came in to stop pitocin and let me eat and sleep etc but since I was progressing on my own we continued.
8:30pm- I noticed a discomfort in my vagina, something felt heavy and I ha a feeling it was my water sac. When I laughed or moved I could feel it.
About 5:15 lab came in to draw blood. When the lady took my blood and turned back to her cart to bag it I heard a pop and felt liquid between my legs.
My water broke and I had bloody show. (Awesome right?!)
I was at an 8cm totally thinned and they called the dr who came in running.
It wasn't time yet. Baby was still high up in my pelvis.. So I Layed there with my legs up in the air on a "peanut" to get baby moving down.
That's when I started hurting again
I had two sitting doses of epi - I pushed the button so much the anesthesiologist told me to stop or I was going to cause problems.
About 9:30 I started pushing with the nurse and my son was born at 10:21am December 26 and I had a 2d degree tear.

It wasn't horrible- the pain from the pitocin was the worst part of the induction.
Giving birth is just uncomfortable.. Imagine feeling like you have to poop like it's about to come out and you can't get it out. That kind if uncomfortable feeling.
You'll be fine, I have a VERY low pain tolerance and I did it :) it's all worth it. My son is three weeks old and I remember the pain but it means nothing now.
  • Lurking from D15

I was induced at 41 weeks using the bulb and cervidil. I was 1cm and 70% effaced. I went in Friday at 7pm, was all set up with the induction by 9pm, and labor started overnight, with active labor kicking in around 5am. I didn't have to get an IV or start pitocin because my body was pretty well ready to get started. The induction part of my labor went really smoothly and I labored to 8cm and spent 3 hours in transition before things got complicated.

I will spare the details of the rest, but it ended in an emergency c section on Sunday morning after over 24 hours of active labor. This didn't have anything to do with the induction though. It was a sunny-side-up, 10 pound, 7 ounce baby that just wasn't coming out the way she was wedged in there.
  • Sounds like they're going to use cervadil to induce. With my ds, I was induced on my due date with cervadil. I went to the hospital at 8pm, had cervadil put on at 830. My doctor planned to come back around 6am, take the cervadil out, and let me go into labor(possibly with pitocin) the next day. However, around 1030pm I woke with strong contractions and my water broke. My cervadil fell out a little while later. I had an epidural at the last possible moment. Around 3am I started pushing and my son was born at 3:30am.

My SIL went to be induced with cervadil at 38 weeks due to loss of fluid and a small baby. She had it put on in the evening like I did and taken off in the early morning hours. She had a little pitocin to help her contractions along but gave birth around 10:15am the next morning, no epidural.

My experience was not the norm for being induced this way but my SILs was. Praying for a happy, healthy deliver for you!

  • I was induced at 41 weeks last time. They had a very similar plan for me. We started with cervadil to start with, then pitocin. My water ended up breaking naturally and I requested an epi when it started getting painful. Getting the epi did not hurt, and once the epi kicked in, I had no pain but could still feel my legs, so it was very comfortable. Once I fully dilated, I pushed for about an hour and half, and the baby was here. Other than a minor hiccup due to his shoulder size, it went very smoothly. I went in around 4pm and I had my baby by 2pm the next day. Don't be scared and don't be freaked out. Good luck!
