1st Trimester

Depression/Anxiety and Meds

What meds were you taking?   What have you and your Dr decided to stay on for the pregnancy?

Thanks ladies

Re: Depression/Anxiety and Meds

  • I take a very low dose of prozac for anxiety. I took it through 2 entire pregnancies and my kids are completely fine. My OB says it is one of the safest ones.

  • I am also on Prozac. I was on it for postpartum after having my son and he assured me that the meds will not reach my unborn child at all. I've been on it for about a year.

  • I'm on 25mg of sertaline(sp) the no name version of zoloft, I told my ob at my first appointment 11 weeks, and she just wrote down that I was on them never asked if I wanted to stop taking them or anything I had a few other questions to ask so totally forgot about asking if I should wean off for the 3rd trimester. But I guess it's all good or she wouldve said something. Apparently they're fairly safe from everything I've read plus they're the lowest dose I can be on for them.
Ill stay on them as long as no complications arise from them, I like not having panic attacks or feeling low for days at a time.
  • I'm prescribed 10 mg of lexipro. Benefits of taking it greatly outweigh the very minimal risk.
  • I went off all of my meds and took a few weeks off work. I made sure to stay on top of my diet and exercise every day, which helped. It isn't easy, but my husband helps a lot. At first I was a total mess, but I'm feeling a lot better now. :)
  • I stayed on my 150mg of Zoloft. My OB asked if I intended to breastfeed and said baby will ween off the meds slowly. I also had to start therapy again because the hormones of pregnancy have wrecked me. If I didn't have my meds I could probably be dead-pregnancy has made me sucidal at times. I wasn't prepared for that. Be upfront with your care providers and your support network. A stable Mom is what the baby needs most.

  • Thanks for the feedback!
  • I was on 150mg of Zoloft, 100mg of Trazadone and also had Ativan I could take if needed. The hormones really messed with me and I was suicidal for most of the first trimester ( plus it didn't help that my OB made me go off my meds) My psychiatrist and OB talked together and determined that being on my meds was the best for me and baby. My psychiatrist kept telling me happy momma equals healthy baby. Between meds and therapy I made it through and my baby has no effects from me taking my meds! Do what's best for you and know that taking care of yourself means also taking care of baby!
  • I have no personal experience with this. However, I think that if you'd like to get off your medication, it would be best to do it before getting pregnant and be off for a few months to allow your body to adjust before pregnancy further messes with your hormones. This is definitely a decision you need to make with your health care providers and under their supervision…
