3rd Trimester

Getting tubes tied?

Im getting my tubes tied after having my little boy. I was wondering has anyone had there tubes tied 6 weeks after giving birth or right after? My doctor says they do it 6 weeks after. Im just wondering if i can ask to have it done after giving birth since im just taking off a month?

Re: Getting tubes tied?

  • I signed a consent for it to be done after the delivery, because I plan to have epidural anyway. OB said they will do their best, but sometimes they are too busy and in that case they will do it later

  • I am due with baby #4 in 5 weeks and this will be our last. I have already signed consent for a tubal and it is being done the morning after delivery. You do have to have consents signed well in advance for insurance companies if you are planning on doing it right after delivery(or during if a c-section).

I had my tubes tied a year after my youngest son was born. I wanted to make sure that he made it through the first year. Just something to think about...

@skrumin I'm in my third trimester with my third baby now, lol. Life happens,

Oh I know it's possible, I just think it's funny she asked that here since women are still pregnant.

I am having a c/s and getting it done while I am already open on the table.  I was actually suppose to get it done on Jan 28th than we got a little surprise!  So I am not taking the chance of waiting till 6 weeks after baby is born.

This happened to my cousin. She had a set of twins, they decided it was enough and was going to get a tubal. At the pre-op visit, it was discovered that she was pregnant.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • My aunt had a planned c section (would have needed one anyways my cousin was so large) and they tied her tubes after he was out.

  • My OB agreed to give me a tubal the day after the birth but I'm having second thoughts.  We are positive that there will be no more babies but I'm concerned about possible side effects.  I've heard it's painful afterward and some women have problems with their cycles and hormones.  I know several people that have had no problems but now I'm paranoid!

This is why my husband is getting snipped instead of me.

  • I'm not ready to commit to the tubal yet, so I'm having a 5 year IUD put in at my 6 week PP check up.

I have never heard of it changing your cycles or hormones. That does even make sense. T
Your ovaries are not touched at all, which is where a majority of your hormones are from.

As for pain, I think that is very rare. I think it is more common with women with IUD to have pelvic pain than with a tubal. I am going to research both of those.

  • If a tube severed and not just tied then the pain could be stronger. I doubt it is that bad, because it would be impossible to determine, if it is uterus contracting or not if done after the birth. There should not be any cycle or hormonal problems after tubal ligation, because it just prevents an egg from getting to the uterus, which does nothing to effect cycle or hormones

Have tubes tied is significantly more invasive and painful to recover from than a vascestomy. I don't know how that pain compares to recovering from childbirth, and never will because I explained to my husband that birth control and child bearing were on me for 15 years, and birth control can be on him for the rest of our marriage. He's getting snipped about 6 months after baby.

I thought the same thing until I talked to a few women that had bad experiences with weird, painful menstral cycles after their tubal.  I did some research and found out it's a real possible side effect.  I'm not saying it's common but I think people should be aware of it.  It definately made me think twice about getting the procedure.
  • Unless you're 100% about not having any more kids I wouldn't get a tubal right after birth. If you're set on a tubal and having a section that's another story. But I know people who've had emotional fallout post tubal... can you imagine dealing with that and post partum hormones?! No thanks!
