PSA for your babymoon planning

It's official: the CDC says pregnant women shouldn't go to these 14 countries due to the risk of Zika virus: https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2016/s0315-zika-virus-travel.html

Re: PSA for your babymoon planning

  • Saw this on the news last night. I'm not planning a babymoon abroad, but if I was I'd definitely be making a change of plans! Risking my babies life surely isn't worth it.

  • Oh no! I wonder how serious and widespread it is, we were planning on Mexico. Bummer.
  • Yep, we were headed to Puerto Vallarta.  Shrunken baby heads and severe brain damage?  No way, no how.  Not even remotely worth the risk.  How is Canada in March?  :P

  • I think what is scary is that even with the best precautions, mosquitoes can still bite you. I live in an area that has pretty bad mosquitoes in the summer and it usually seems that no matter how much I cover up, put on bug spray, etc. that I always wind up with a few bites each summer.  Its just not worth the risk IMO. Brain damage, shrunken head and high risk of death? Nope.

Canada is slushy in March but it'll be super cheap this year!
  • I was supposed to go visit my sister in Puerto Rico next month and was on the fence about it. I guess this settles it...
  • Yeah we are cancelling our trip and rescheduling it. It's weird to plan from going to the beach to somewhere equally as cold! We are going to avoid tropical weather for now until after the baby arrives. I'm with you @arteduc8 it's not worth the risk of long term effects.

  • I just got back from Puerto Vallarta. Very small chance of something happening. Oops. Probably shouldn't have had that sushi either.

  • I just got back from playa del carmen mexico the day after that came out..only got a few bites..but freaaaaaking right out.
  • But you're right @kara9729...I have cats and toxoplasmosis can apparently also cause microcephaly..its just not new and in the news alot so less scary somehow.  So prob shouldn't freak out too much.
  • Well we pulled the plug too.  I posted about zika for a while in the "Babymoon Ideas" thread.  Talked to my doctor too and she recommended against traveling to St Lucia (which is near an island that is on the CDC list).
  • Another cancelled vacation to Mexico. Now we sit on a voucher that's pretty much useless unless we go somewhere coldish the next month or two.

We also know a lot more about how to avoid toxo from cats... wash your hands, have someone else change the litter box, ideally have indoor-only cats, etc. Even with preventive measures, it's pretty damn tough to avoid ANY mosquito bites when mosquitos are around
  • I just read this regarding the bahamas (found it on trip advisor) https://www.bahamasnational.com/?q=node/823

Now I'm really thinking I need to cancel my early March trip (its not a babymoon I'm going for a long weekend with my sisters to celebrate one of their milestone birthdays) I know she's going to be so upset... ughhhhh

  • I spoke to the doctor and nurse about this yesterday. They did not advise against travel. They basically said that there could be several other factors contributing to the Zika 'outbreak' and that I should be more concerned about the mosquitoes around where I live that can carry West Nile. I probably still won't chance it but I appreciated their honesty.

We have a wedding in Cancun in a few weeks that is 100% nonrefundable. I'll be talking to my MD at my 20 week appt next Wednesday. Probably will use CDC recommended Deet. Between Zika, Chikungunya, and West Nile... Mosquitoes suck.

We cancelled our trip to Aruba. :s Going to Miami instead. Didn't want to risk it
  • Sorry @taluce so did we, but couldn't cancel our stay so we will plan on going next winter. Hopefully Miami has just as good weather!

  • I just read that United will let customers cancel flights to Zika areas. Hopefully this will help people who had trips planned!
