June 2016 Moms

Okay so Aruba isn't on the list of countries affected by Zika, BUT....

Venezuela is, and it's 13 miles of the coast of Venezuela. My OB wasn't thrilled with me going at 31/32 weeks anyway, I'm assuming the smart thing to do would be to go to my parents' place in Florida for the week instead. Thoughts?

  • Sounds like you already know what you should do :)

At least you have a good alternative!

  • I'm struggling with the babymoon destination. DH wants us to just cut the bs and stay in Canada (no virus and no dealing with the American exchange rate) ... I want sunshine!!! And we have a place to stay in the Cayman islands (come on!! Lol)

We are considering his parents place in Arizona. If we do that we will spend a couple of nights there and a couple of nights at a nice hotel so we get the vacation experience and some alone time and pampering.

Maybe that is an option for you!?

I probably need a reality check on whether I want to fly for 12+ hours with layovers while being very pregnant!
  • We just cancelled our trip to Aruba because it's so close. @MsBeachNJ had a good point that it's a very desert like island and therefore there are probably not as many mosquitos and I would agree. Part of what we considered was the fact that we wouldn't relax if we were there and would be freaked out at the sight of a single mosquito. Rescheduling our flights and paying a little extra is worth it if it means avoiding a lifetime of problems for the baby. I read somewhere you could maybe have your doctor write a letter to try and get the airline to fully cancel and refund your ticket. We are going to go back to Aruba because I love it, but just wait until after the baby is born.

  • There are already 2 confirmed cases in Miami, so even if you go to FL wear bug spray!
  • There is also 2 in Chicago. I'd wear bug spray anywhere you go honestly. I've never dealt with misquitoes soo bad until we moved to hawaii. My 5 year old gets bit and then ends up with raging  fevers, it's nuts! It's kind of a no brainer that misquitoes carry diseases and viruses though.

  • The Cassie's in Chicago are people who recently got back from a country that is having a problem with it---they did not get it in America.

@yoshi1230 I had not heard about the cases in Miami! I better start watching the news- we are in Orlando. I am hoping it doesn't come this far north any time soon!!  We love to Kayak, but I won't be going in the lagoons for a while I suppose.

Edited:  I read the article on the three cases - There are currently three travel-associated cases of Zika virus in Florida; two are Miami-Dade residents who traveled to Colombia in December and the third case is a Hillsborough County resident who traveled to Venezuela in December.

  • Bummer! I love Aruba. We are hoping to go back to Divi Summer 2017. It will be much different with baby!
