It's slow around here today...what's your profession?

I love hearing about what people do!

What is your profession?

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it?

Would you do anything else given the choice?

Re: It's slow around here today...what's your profession?

  • I will start...

What is your profession? I am a customer service representative at a large propane company.

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it? I always wanted to be a teacher or nurse. That obviously did not happen. My mom was a single parent and we didn't have the money for college so I worked full time from the time I graduated high school.

Would you do anything else given the choice? I would definitely do something more geared toward helping people like a teacher or nurse. I love my job and the people I work with though and it is definitely not hard to do.

  • It's slow for me too so I'll contribute:

What is your profession?  Customer Service Manager at a manufacturing company ( @jamiesc58
sounds like we're not all that different!)

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it?  definitely just fell into it when I needed a job but I'm still here 4 years later.  I'm not all that passionate about the industry or the job in general but I love the people I work with and it's super flexible.

Would you do anything else given the choice?  Absolutely.  I don't plan on coming back once the baby comes and eventually I'd like to do something else.  My husband's family owns a regional chain of kitchenware stores, so I can see myself participating in that at some point.

  • What is your profession? United methodist pastor

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it? I kind of fell into it. I always felt a calling I guess but never thought it would happen. God has a funny sense of humor.

Would you do anything else given the choice? Probably open a business and sell quilts, blankets and other homemade items. I love being crafty and creative.

I'm a math teacher to middle scoolers.

I definitely just kind of fell into it because I had an amazing ceramics teacher in high school. I originally was going to be an art teacher, but my university nixed the program. They didn't tell me until orientation, so I switched to math.

Doing something other than teaching is a loaded question to all teachers. There are days where I LOVE my job. I love the kids and my classroom. Teaching is really a great fit for me. There are so many aspects of teaching that some days it is your worst nightmare. Long hours, tough cases, politics everywhere. So I guess it depends on the day you catch me. Did I just spend that day in seven meetings and now have to prep for the week at home? Or did I actually get to use my planning and a kid told me they have my back?

  • What is your profession? I am an licensed engineer in the design and construction industry.

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it? I always wanted to be in a math and science based profession. The specific type of engineering that I do, though, I was encouraged into by my father and I'm very glad I listened.

Would you do anything else given the choice? No. I love my profession.

  • What is your profession?
Senior Clinical Trial Specialist in pharmaceutical clinical trials.

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it?
Started college thinking I would be an Englisg major Theater minor but ended up loading up on psych and bio classes. Declared biopsych sophomore year. Learned about drug research shortly after that and fought hard to break into the industry after college grad. Just over 13 years total and I'm on my second company. I'd love to find a part time position in my field but part time just does not exist which is quite odd considering sometimes we only need "half a manager."

Would you do anything else given the choice?
I really wish I had known about the 5 yr Bachelors/PA programs where you can graduate as both a physicians assistant and as a BA in your chosen field. Maybe someday when the kids are older...

  • What is your profession?
I'm an underwriter at a life insurance company. Basically I receive someone's insurance application, review their medical and financial background, and decide if they qualify for coverage.

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it?
I don't think anyone dreams of being an underwriter as a child, lol! I never had a specific idea of what I wanted to do, and I was so jealous of people who did!

Would you do anything else given the choice?
Nope, I definitely love it! The company I work for is awesome. I'd like to stay there forever :)
  • What is your profession?
I'm a legal recruiter. We find attorneys, paralegals, etc. for selective law firms and companies. Also known as a "headhunter."

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it?
Definitely just fell into it. Went to law school and knew pretty early on that it was not the career for me, but I didn't want to quit so I finished and then began looking for that elusive "alternative career" that doesn't really exist much in the legal world. Recruiting appealed to me because it's rewarding to help someone land a job (even though technically our clients are the companies and firms, not the candidates).

Would you do anything else given the choice?
Yes. While I really like my boss and coworkers, and the company I work for, I do not have passion for my career. I would change careers altogether and pursue either teaching, writing or something in a creative field. I know it's not too late, it's just really hard to make those life changes when you have to keep working. My husband is a chef and our ultimate dream is to have our own restaurant.
  • What is your profession? Tenant Services Coordinator. I work in the management office of office buildings (commercial real estate).

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it? I used to lease apartments (residential management) and after 3 1/2 years, I wanted something a little different, so now I am in commercial management. Realized its not exactly my dream job, so most likely won't be coming back after baby is born.

Would you do anything else given the choice? Yes. Work with animals. My first job was working at PetSmart (6 years of it). I loved it, but I wanted out of retail. I always wanted to work as a zoo keeper (I have volunteered as keeper aide in the past and loved it), but the issue is pay is HORRIBLE (and leasing apartments got me used to good pay). Now I am thinking of getting some schooling in for Vet Tech. Maybe look into that once baby is born. Even though pay isn't great, I want to be happy.

  • What is your profession? Currently I clean houses.

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it? Not at all, lol, totally fell into it. My previous job wasn't paying enough and a family friend had an opening in her little business so I started working for her, making nearly double my previous job.

Would you do anything else given the choice? Go back to working as a vet tech. I worked as a vet tech for 5 years and I LOVED my job. However, we needed me to be bringing in a higher income. Now, since hubby's income is higher after little one is born I will be quitting my cleaning job and taking on my dream job of being a SAHM. :)

  • There is actually another thread on this topic already
  • What is your profession?

I am an Athletic Trainer that is working as a Medicial Assistant to an orthopedic surgeon.

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it?

I feel in love with Athletic Training in Highschool. My degree is actually in it as well. Worked in a Highschool for 7 years and finally needed a change. The pros were outweighing the cons. A basketball parent is the clinical manager where I am now and we met by chance in the hospitality room at a basketball tournament. It was fate that I found this job.

Would you do anything else given the choice?

I've thought a lot about that. I'm not passionate about the job, but don't know what else I would do. I like I to recruiting at one point, just never got a break in the field. Maybe one day.
34 Mother of 4 year old and 2 Labs. Happily Married to my Hubs of 6 years.
  • What is your profession?
I am a pediatric ICU nurse (I work in the pediatric ICU, Peds cardiac ICU, NICU, and step down units).

Is this something you have dreamed of since you were a child...?
I initially thought I wanted to be a pediatrician. Started off premed and knew it wasn't for me. Changed my major to nursing and haven't regretted that decision for one day 12 years later. I love what I do.

Would you do anything else given the choice?
No, although if I were to go back to school I've wanted to get a certification for massage therapy. Muscles, anatomy, the human body, etc fascinates me...nerdy, I know.
I love being an ICU nurse-it's all I've done since I graduated, although I've always had this lofty dream of being a prison nurse. However the reality is I wouldn't last a minute.
  • What is your profession? Bartender

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it? Certainly not something you dream of becoming. I love my job, and my coworkers. I work in a membership based club for the sports arenas, I've had the same regulars for 10 years, they have become friends. Also, with it being in the sports arena the hours aren't late, and we are always full.

Would you do anything else given the choice? I have a Paralegal degree, and while doing my internship I started working at the sports arena and an outdoor concert venue. It was so amazing being outside all day listening to music / watching sports. I just new an office job inside wasn't for me.
  • @loulouB I absolutely love that you do what you do!
  • What is your profession? I'm a research associate at a dental school

Is it something you have dreamed of since being a child or did you just sort of fall into it? I always wanted to be a scientist, or a mermaid, so this was more attainable

Would you do anything else given the choice? Yes, if I could go back in time and talk to my younger self I would have gone into something more creative but still technical like graphic design.
