Baby moving... or not..?

Hi all,

This is my first pregnancy and I am now at 20 wks and 4 days.  I am still not sure that I have felt my baby move.  I think I am just worrying...  at the last ultrasound, last week, her heartbeat is just fine, and she moved some during the ultrasound, but not a ton.  That, on top of me not thinking I have felt her, has me a touch concerned.  I saw her moving her hand and legs a bit, but certainly not bouncing around or anything.
I assume all is fine?  No one as my OB clinic said anything was off, and that her heartbeat was great!
Just hoping for some advice for a first-time pregnancy.

Re: Baby moving... or not..?

  • I didn't feel my DD move until closer to 24 weeks. I had an anterior placenta and it really blocked a lot of the movement. I'm amazed now at how much I feel this early, because it's soooo different than my first pregnancy. Everything is probably fine (and babies sleep an awful lot, even in utero, so the fact that she didn't move much at an ultrasound may not mean anything other than she was taking a snooze)

  • I'm a FTM at 20 weeks today and I've felt a few pokes and twinges but nothing consistent. My doctor told me at my appointment last week that I'd start feeling movement in the next few weeks. It's hard not to worry, but I just keep telling myself that nothing else is wrong (no bleeding, no pain, etc) so baby is probably fine.

Everything I've read online says a lot of women (FTMs especially) don't feel "real" movement until 26 weeks and before then it's so subtle that it's easy to miss. You're probably feeling her and not realizing it or it's happening when you're sleeping.
  • Babies move on and off throughout the day and it could be that your baby was resting/sleeping during your ultrasound.  I've been feeling movement for a couple weeks now, but its not all the time.  Baby tends to move more when I'm resting and less when I'm active.  It feels like little buzzes or vibrations for me at the moment. I'm a FTM, but from what I've read its very normal to not feel baby yet.  I'm sure you will soon!
  • Oh, thanks to you all!  I am definitely trying to not worry, but it sure is difficult not to.
Thank you all so much for helping ease my mind!

My LO refuses to move during ultrasounds. The most he will do is roll over and and moon the tech. Today he even put his hands on his butt as though he was auditioning for the baby version of old school. Babies move at different rates so normal has a huge range. :) 20 as a FTM is still early for some to be feeling movement every day, doesn't sound weird to me if you're doctors aren't worried.
  • I've been thinking the same thing!! Patience :) I'm so looking forward to movement... Then it will be a real little person in there!!

  • I dint remember exactly when i felt movement with my first, but it was after 20w. With my second it was around 16-18w, and with this one, I've been feeling him/her since ~15w. Really it's just that I know what I'm feeling. I couldn't feel baby everyday, at first but now at 18w, it's everyday.

It takes a while to recognize what your feeling with confidence.

Lay down, in a quite, non-distracting room. Drink juice, eat chocolate, relax and wait. The subtle little flutters in your pelvis/low abdomin is baby. They can be very subtle.

Also if you have extra amniotic fluid or an anterior placent you're just going to have to wait because they mask the movements.
    Good luck.

  • My doctor told me I probably won't feel my baby move until around 23 weeks, based on the location of my placenta. Might be the same for you???

  • Thank you ladies!  You are all wonderful!  It is nice to have somewhere to come to talk.  :)
  • With my first I felt flutters as early as 14 weeks. This go round I'm 17 weeks and have barely felt anything. If OB didn't see any reason to worry then I'm sure you're totally fine. It won't be long before you'll be begging LO to stop using your bladder as a trampoline and to move their foot from between your ribs.

  • My guess is that everything is A-OK :). I find that I worry when I don't feel kicks for a bit, and then when he/she really starts to kick, I panic that something is wrong!  My two babies have both moved very differently- my daughter started around 18 weeks and was really in my BELLY whereas this one has been poking since 15 weeks (maybe 14?  It was early..) and it's always very pronounced kicks very low.  I THINK every babe is just different in terms of movement.  Good luck with everything.
  • With my first, I didn't feel any movement until closer to 23-24 weeks.  I'm pregnant with my second and will be 20 weeks tomorrow, and I'm just starting to feel small movements in the past week.  I never felt it when it was the "gas bubbles/butterfly flutters", either time.  When I do feel anything, I'm feeling it low down, around my underwear line.
  • At your ultrasound did they tell you where your placenta is located? If it's anterior like mine is that could be why you're not feeling much yet
  • I am 20+3 and not sure if I am feeling anything yet. A couple of weeks ago I thought I felt a distinctive jab but then nothing else. This week I think I have been feeling the flutters but it could be something else. Some friends I have talked to said they didn't really feel anything until at least 22 weeks so that is reassuring.
