Low amniotic fluid?

Had my last ultrasound today and the tech noticed that the baby wasn't moving much. I think she slightly overreacted... But she sent me to the hospital for monitoring. While there they found that the baby was perfectly find but that I have low amniotic fluid---I'm measuring at a 7.1. Anything five or less is immediate cause for concern from what I was told and read online. Anyone else in a similar situation or any STM's who have been through this before? The hospital doctor said they will likely monitor my fluid levels and consider inducing me if it drops much further but I meet with my actual doctor tomorrow afternoon.

Re: Low amniotic fluid?

  • I haven't been through it before but am sort of going through it now. My levels are fine but have been steadily dropping. 3 weeks ago I started at 17 then the next week down the 14, last week was at 9 and today was measuring at 8. I've been going in twice weekly for monitoring anyway so now I just get the AFI added to the BPP and cord dopplers.

  • With my first I was monitored the entire second half of my pregnancy. It would go between a 6 and 8. I was induced at 39weeks because it dropped to a 4. I never had to go to the hospital for monitoring they just did ultrasounds. Just ask your doctor lots of questions so you know the plan if it gets too low. And just an FYI DD was perfect and healthy when she was born
  • @BabyHope2013 I'm in the same boat. I go for weekly BPP's to monitor my fluid in addition to the prenatal appointments. 2 weeks ago I was a 5.5 then last week I was a 7.34 so it went up a bit. I'm being induced at 39 weeks due to this and my rising blood pressure. I was told the same thing as you though, if I went below a 5 they'd induce that day.

Yes, let's blame them for low AFI and the potential for early babies because they're not drinking enough water. *huge sarcastic eyeroll*

OP, I had similar issues with my DD. They found during a prenatal echo at 30 weeks that "things didn't look right" with the fluid. When I went to the OB at 31w, I think it was around 8. Ended up getting ultrasounds every 2 weeks until 37w when it dropped into the 4 range and they did a c/s the next morning (they would've induced if DD hadn't been frank breech).

  • Thanks all. I have been drinking my at least 64 ounces of water pretty much religiously till I caught the stomach flu from my toddler this past Friday. But the doctors said my lack of fluids over the weekend while I got my stomach back to feeling normal likely wasn't to be mainly to blame. Glad to know others are in the same boat as me and that baby's can come perfectly healthy out of this situation.

  • I'm currently doing through the same thing. I'm at a 6.7 I believe. For a month now I've been going every week. I've been drinking loads of water and nothing is helping. Today I pulled from work and get to sit on my butt till he's here.

Keep us updated and good luck.
  • I'm not going thru the same situation as you guys actually the opposite. My fluid levels are at 37.2

  • @kalenvan that's interesting. The perinatal specialist told me I could drink 2 gallons a day and it would NOT affect my amniotic fluid at all. What kind of doctor are you exactly? I'll wait.......

I asked my high risk OB if we could try a few IV fluid blouses to try to increase it and give my daughter another week on the inside. She said it wouldn't work. Both our docs must be a bunch of quacks if more water is the answer. I bet the OB, hospital, neonatologist, etc just wanted my money.

@DrillSergeantCat that has got to be it! Brilliant! Tonight I'll try a different hole whilst dancing in the moonlight and sipping raspberry tea. Gotta stay hydrated.

@VitaLuna that was my first thought too. All they want is all my dollars :/

Why should she use the search bar? She didn't start this thread.

  • @kalenvan You need to work on your "sarcasm" skills (if that's what you call it when you get called out for ignorance).
