Cutoff for vacation?

I wanted to see what all of your cutoff dates were to go on vacation this summer? We usually go to myrtle beach(9.5 hr drive from home) the week of June 14, I'm due August 13th. Is it unrealistic that I won't be miserable if we go our normal time? I had a winter baby last round so unsure of the heat and majorly pregnant go around this time. Thanks and looking forward to your input!

Re: Cutoff for vacation?

  • I have a friend who's OB advised her to be within maybe 3-4 hours of home during the 3rd Trimester.  She was not high-risk and had no known complications.  I would check with your OB on their restrictions, first.

  • @bsckgb7 thanks I am definitely planning on asking my next appointment!
  • We're planning our vacation for mid-May, when I'll be 26-27 weeks. It's the tail end of 2nd tri, and I don't think I'd be comfortable after getting into 3rd tri (both physically and in terms of peace of mind).
  • I was told not to fly after 34 weeks and to be within an hour of home beginning at 36 weeks.
  • @jle1021  We use to go to Pawleys Island, right near Myrtle Beach, every year! That was so much fun.

We are going for a beach vacation to Galveston in the middle of May. We will be about 2-3 hours with major traffic from home. Everyone else wanted to go to Florida or Alabama but I refused to be that far away from home just incase something happened. I said we could also join everyone next year. Just not this year. Thankfully another couple didn't want to do the drive either and all agreed that Galveston was good option for us.

  • June is going to be my cutoff. I had to decline my invitation to my sisters wedding since it is 5 hours away and less than 1 month before my due date :(. The only other traveling we plan on will be within an hour or two of home with the camper
  • I'm planning on going to the beach 5 hours away the week of June 12, and I'm due August 20. I hadn't even thought that it might cuttin it close at more than 2 months out, but I'll be askin my doc at my next appt!
  • I'm planning an international trip leaving my 29 week and coming back when I'm 31 weeks. My doctor said she doesn't really like anyone to fly after 32 weeks but admits the real limit is 36 weeks. She just likes to be cautious. I'm hoping I feel okay enough to travel at the time. We'll see!
  • I am flying to Orlando for vaca with DH and family when I am at 30 weeks. I'd rather do that short 1.5 hour flight vs. drive 14 hours ughh.
  • We normally take a summer vacation about four hours from home the first week of August, but since I will be nearly 38 weeks and had my son at 38 weeks due to cholestasis that isn't happening this time!  My travel cutoff more than two hours from will be at about 32 weeks this time.  That may change if I don't have cholestasis this time (fingers crossed!) even though it didn't show up until 37.5 weeks.

  • I think mid to early june you'd be feeling ok as long as it was a relaxing vacation.

  • During my first I traveled internationally until the 8th month and my doctor was fine with it.  I wouldn't even think twice about being a few hours away unless you were high risk.
  • I'm planning on traveling about 2.5 hrs away the first week of July. I'll be about 34 weeks. I'll be close enough to a big hospital if there's any emergency and would be able to get home quickly if I feel like there's any worries. It is a beach vacation so I may be miserable in the sun/heat but it's our last chance for a little vacation just DH, DS and I.

  • We don't have any vacations planned but I will need to travel for work domestically week 27 and internationally week 31 - I'm going to ask my midwife at my next appt what she thinks about the international trip. At the very least, I'll be buying trip insurance in case things don't stay normal with this pregnancy.

  • I normally travel for school (about 2 hours driving through rural areas) monthly. The last month I will is May. We're also planning a vacation end of May.

I'll also be traveling to a concert (about 2 hours away) at 8 months, but it's through a more populated area, and I won't be going along, so I am less worried about it.

  • I flew to Dallas from MSP at 36 weeks pregnant with DD with no complications. I am also considering flying out to California for a cousin's wedding on 7/9 and my due date is 7/31.

As long as your doctor is okay with the travel and you aren't high risk, I wouldn't worry too much about it

  • I'm planning a trip for early June (to a major city with good hospitals), but told my parents we wouldn't be coming to visit them (5 hour flight) this summer in July/ early August, as I would just be too uncomfortable for the long flight, and won't want to be chasing a toddler on a beach.  I think we'll visit them next summer when we hopefully will have a 4 year old and a nearly 1 year old.

  • Also, I would look at WHERE and HOW you are traveling. Many airlines/ cruiselines have their own cut offs. And since I normally drive 2+ hours through areas with no medical care, I won't do that.  Another 2 hour trip where I am never more than 40 minutes from a hospital? I'm fine doing that at 8 months.

  • We're planning a second trimester vacation, but that should be fine.  I routinely travel between two major Texas cities for work, 4 hours apart, but with several decent sized cities in between, and will keep doing that until the doctor tells me to stop.  The morning sickness has cut that travel though during the first trimester... travel makes me feel so pukey that I spend more time recovering than the travel is worth!
  • We're taking a trip to Hawaii (from Chicago ) when I'll be 24 weeks. I have to go to NYC regularly for work and my MFM doc said I could do that up to 36w and I'm high risk, but obviously there are several hospitals in NYC and it's a short flight
  • were going to europe in 2 weeks. We figured we'd get some traveling under our belt before were too late. I know in my 3rd trimester with baby #1 i was uncomfortable and tired. the idea of traveling would have been aweful!
  • My OB said as long as my pregnancy remains low risk, I am free to travel anywhere I want up to 32 weeks - including internationally as long as it's in a developed country (in case of emergency). After 32 weeks, she said to stay within 3-4 hours of home.
