So I'm EBF DD, she is great at it, but sometimes she seems bored or just needing to suck on something. I am trying to try a pacifier but she doesn't seem interested. Any suggestions??
Try different brands. My LO wouldn't take the Avent but loves the mam brand. We just did trial and error with some gift bag freebies from when we registered. Also we had to hold it in a bit for her to get the idea.
I'm having the same issue. Olive seems to only be interested in her "bepi" (pacifier) when she's in full-on panic mode or sick (she's had conjunctivitis this week and has been more interested in it because she's sooky) And when she does take it, it's even worse because she DROPS it constantly. And when she does, if she's not sufficiently drowsy, she whines until i help her get it back in. And even weirder, she's dropped it, whined for it, then refused it. THEN KEPT WHINING FOR IT...
The only time i can guarantee pacifing her without feeding is to let her suck my pinky until she passes out.
It's all really weird.
Here she is after dropping it a final time about a week ago. It just orbits her head.
Thanks It was a swaddle - when i had it on her in this pic, she had begun to outgrow it and was busting out of it. She has a pair of matching jammies too.
I agree with trying different brands. DS would only take mam or occasionally advent soothies. DD only takes Advent soothies. It may seem weird but sometimes to get her to take a new one I keep it in my bra for a few minutes so it has my scent (she's now ebf).
The other thing is using the nipple to tickle her lower lip like I would with bf to activate that reflex. If she keeps starting to suck but gets frustrated and spits it out continually then she needsaw something else and I try to figure out what that is.
I formula feed, but DD is completely uninterested in a pacifier. If she is starving, she will suck on it for a little until she realizes she not getting anything and then goes back to crying. DS is two and he would never take a pacifier, so I'm thinking it's going to be the same with DD. On a positive note, if they never take to the pacifier, you never have to go through taking it away from them. I think some kiddos just don't like them for whatever reason.
Yup keep trying different brands. We are in the same boat. Right now her most appealing one is a nuk brand for newborn-2 mo, they're kinda rare to find but they are smaller and fit DDs face better so she occasionally takes that. She really likes Mam bottles so we are gonna try a mam paci next.
@sharonholck28 I really liked it with DS that you can get mam pacifiers in newborn. I couldn't find them everywhere but the size made all the difference for him.
Henry only takes Dr. Browns. For a little while he would take Nuk's Newborn but didn't like them as well. The Dr Brown and Nuk's are both smaller and Henry was a tiny guy when he was born, so I'm sure they just fit him better and that is what his preference is now. He will have nothing to do with Avent and Mam pacifiers.
I've tried several brands and DS likes none of them. Some kids just don't like pacifiers. He wants to use me for one though so I'd love it if he'd take one too.
If I know she's not hungry, but won't take a paci, I dip it in breast milk before I give it to her. I then hold it in for a minute and she'll usually keep it. But she likes to spit it out after a little while anyway and then cry for it.
The nurse gave DD a soothie in the hospital to help with the PKU test. When we got home we offered her the mam sample found in the MM bag (or target..idk). Lately though she wants nothing to do with pacifiers. She'll cry and suck for like 2 seconds, spit it out, and pass out. We have tons of different brands of pacifiers and she won't take anything anymore. Sigh.
Carlos will take his soothie after a long meal, if he fell asleep and woke up again from movement. He really sucks at keeping it in his mouth, but is getting better at it. You really have to hold it there the entire time they suck, sometimes.
DS only takes the soothie and we prefer the wubbanub because he can hold it in and root back to it himself. He doesn't even register the nuk or similiarly shaped pacifiers. We BF and use Avent Natural Bottles so maybe the soothie is more similar to his bottle?
My LO gets really pissed every time I try to give her the paci. We use the avent soothies and she will take it but we have to hold it in her mouth with her screaming and batting us away for a long time before she will. I don't think it's brand I think she just wants my nipple and gets mad when we put something else in there
DS will only take soothies. I tried the mam and the nuk but he will have suck for a few seconds and spit them out in disgust lol. He is also ebf and takes expressed milk from avent naturals a few times a week so maybe there is a connection? We also have a wubbanub he uses in the car seat but I'm too nervous to give it to him at night.
