1st Trimester

compression tights/socks for plane travel?

I am around 5 weeks and have some upcoming plane travel for the holidays.  Should I get compression socks or tights for the flight (cross-country)?  I am going to have plane travel later in the first tri and early in the second tri (or at least have these plans to do so), so I would not mind getting something now (like socks) that I could continue to use.  Can I just get sports compression tights or socks?  Any brand recommendations?

  • I bought pantyhose from a maternity store, but only had to worry about one round trip. My doctor also suggested walking during the flight.

  • Yeah, my RE said that I should be drinking a lot to both prevent dehydration and keep me up and walking (to/from the bathroom).

  • I fly a fair amount for work and took long trips at 6 weeks and 8 weeks.  I think hydrating and walking/going to the bathroom make a difference, but honestly the main thing for me was dealing with early pregnancy nausea, which just is what it is.  Socks might help, but I didn't notice much of a change in the travel experience (aside from the nausea).  Good luck and enjoy the holiday trip!
  • I don't think you need them in the first tri. I've had two 5 hour flights at 15 weeks and then 18 weeks and not needed them
  • I'm almost 28 weeks and my midwife recently told me I could get them if I wanted but hey weren't necessary. She said I should stay hydrated and walk around and if not able to walk around I should do leg exercises in my seat.

  • If you do get them... get the full hose and not socks. The socks and thigh highs can create more problems than they theoreticalLy prevent

  • My OB was not helpful.  She said compression socks, I asked if the ones for sports are ok for this, she didn't know and had no recommendations.  I ended up getting Dr. Scholl's compression socks (they go over the calf) from Target, have not tried them out yet.  We have long international flights coming up, so my plan is to bring them and wear them at least part of the time, but focus on hydration and walking around.
