EDD 02/01 no dilation no effacement

I'm 37 weeks and 4 days today. I am absolutely miserable! Went to the doc today and my cervix is still really thick, no signs of thinning out and obviously no dilation. This is my 3rd baby and I'm beyond discouraged! I walk like crazy, been having sex to help the cause, been having contractions but nothing is helping! The hospital won't allow me to be induced until I'm 39 wks and a day along! I'm miserable!!! Don't judge me but I'm just ready to get this going! I'm having horrible sciatica pain and have also developed carpal tunnel in the last month. Any words of encouragement or advice?

  • Baby will come when ready don't rush. At least it's just one more week until you can be induced. I'm due 3 feb and I want to make it to 40 weeks.

My best friend was in this situation on Wednesday, today she is in labor. She however is at 39w 4d.
Baby comes when baby wants, and signs of labor can appear weeks ahead of time or over night. Hang in there!
  • You can do it mama! Don't wish your baby out too early. These last 3-5 weeks are important for brain development. I know it's hard. Life has a sucky factor for all of us right now but it's so worth it!!

  • Right there with you EDD is 2/1 I'm a FTM but physically my daughter is taking everything I have right now.... My doc said if I wasn't dialated at least to 1cm by my next appointment I'm going to be over due but they said drink more water because it'll increase babies urinary output(along with your own) and it will put more pressure on the cervix
  • This is my 3rd baby and has been my most physically and emotionally challenging of my pregnancies, so I can commiserate a little.  It's far from easy!

How far along were you when you had your other two?  Were you induced with either of them?

3rd baby you should know your cervix is not a crystal ball. Hang in there and rest where you can!
  • I was over my due date with my other 2. I had the same issues with my cervix with them as well. I ended up being induced which is the reason I'm so discouraged today. I'm trying to avoid induction! By no means am I wishing the baby out before term. However I am wishing for my body to cooperate and my cervix to at least thin out a little on its own. This has been by far my toughest pregnancy as I mentioned before, I'm in a lot of pain :( Prayers are much needed.

If I were you, I would try to be realistic that if the first two came late, this one probably will too.  I know it's frustrating, because mine both came after 41 weeks, so I'm playing the same game.  I'm miserable, but I'd still rather have a couple extra weeks of this garbage than go through an induction when my body isn't ready.

  • I'm in the same boat. I'm 37 weeks, she is still head up. No dialation, nothing has changed. She even told me my cervix was still very firm. Then she decides to tell me that at my next appt if she hasn't moved and no changes she wants to schedule a c section the following week at 39 weeks. I asked her if I can just wait it out and let her come naturally and she said her fear is that she may drop but still be head up and it will cause complications.... Thoughts about this ladies? I'm a FTM and would love some imput.

  • I am 38 weeks and no sign of labour anytime soon. The best thing I did was keep telling myself and planning to go past 40 weeks. That way I keep telling myself 2 weeks minimum to go- and I am not driving myself crazy over it.

    I had my DS at 40 + 5.

I am with you though, I do my want an induction so I am going to start doing everything possible at 40 weeks to start labour naturally.

I am constantly saying that in my head - your cervix is not a crystal ball. It is starting to become my response to so many posts :D:D:D

If it was me I would want to wait until at least 40 weeks to see if she flips and comes naturally. You can google lots of positions and stuff to try to get a breech baby to turn.
  • @txmommy224 - The new guidelines say that a baby is full term and healthiest at 39 weeks and not 37 weeks. So, it might be best for baby to wait until at least 39 weeks. Hang in there! https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/10/22/full-term-pregnancy-definition/3145107/
  • @skschnake I would try to push it to 40. Even at 39, baby may not be ready for an eviction. My LO is currently breech. If she doesn't turn, I plan to ask if I can wait until labor starts naturally to see if she turns. If they won't go for that, I don't want the section until 40wks.

FWIW, DD1 was frank breech with her butt wedged in my pelvis. It didn't cause any complications and my MW and MFM never mentioned added risk (although i had other issues not related to her position), so I'm not inclined to buy your doc's reasoning of complications if baby drops while breech.

I'm a FTM so idk how helpful my advice is..but I would absolutely not let her schedule me for a csection at 39 weeks If I were you. I've heard that some doctors and hospitals push for csections because they can charge the insurance companies more than for a vaginal birth, however I don't know how much truth there is to that. But I do know that babies can turn right up until delivery! Spinningbabies.com has good info and techniques for it and also doctors can perform something called a version where they externally flip the baby. It's not always successful and can have risks (PROM, onset labor, fetal distress sometimes) but I'd say it's worth looking into. A c-section is a serious surgery and would probably be best if used as a last resort at 40 weeks. Just my opinion though. Best of luck to you!

  • @VitaLuna just hang in there!  I'm pretty miserable too but it won't be much longer!  As for the carpal tunnel, wear a brace all night every night and it will feel much better!  I've had carpal tunnel since the middle of 2nd tri and the brace usually does the trick!

  • My edd is 2/7 but as of 2 weeks ago I was dilated 2cm and 70% effaced. Contractions are almost constant so I feel your pain of being miserable! Hang in there! Lots of walking and just keep your chin up :)
  • Hang in there. I'm due the 9th and went to the hospital twice in December bc I have symptoms of stomach bug/IBS but of course the hospital cant decide and less then a month I lost ALL my pregnancy weight and I am emotionally a wreck bc I want to eat but can't bc my guts will be in excruciating pain, I feel like I'm failing my unborn son bc I can't eat and give him what he needs and I can't take this throbbing pain in my back and my toddler decided to now change to one nap a day. Even though I want him out NOW I hope he makes it to 40. You may be miserable but you will never get this back. My first baby was induced and those contractions are horrible, as soon as the pitocin kicks in contractions go 0 to 60 in minutes, so I want to experience the real deal. All this misery is worth it.
  • I went to the doctor today. 36 w 2 d and NOTHING!!! No dilation, no effacement. Apparently I'm in this for the long haul!!
  • @cmq21 the pitocin is exactly what I am trying to avoid! I cannot stress enough how although I'm miserable I don't want to go into early labor. All I want is for my body to naturally do what it's supposed to. I'm in a lot of pain as it is because of other issues related to this pregnancy. Apparently most of the women in here think I'm trying to go into labor today!
  • Your body very well may do what it's supposed to on its own, once you are full term. Right now you're what, 38+1? And you went over your due date twice before, so if I were you I would try to mentally prepare for the same thing this time around. I probably WILL be in your position come late March. I'm also on my 3rd baby and both previous pregnancies went a week or more over due date. So I'm already telling myself that it's not even going to happen until I'm closer to 41 weeks. I think wishing and hoping that it happens sooner sets us up to be even more disappointed and cranky when it doesn't happen. Hang in there mama. My advice is to try pampering yourself. Get a pedicure, go take a long warm bath, get a prenatal massage.
  • I think its pretty universal that when we get to the last month or two things really start to get tough- I'm 35 weeks but physically and mentally exhausted (I have a 20mo as well). My first came at 38w +6 and I'm hoping this one will be early as well. As long as baby is healthy :) 10 months gestation is a long time and I don't think there's anything wrong with hoping the misery will end sooner rather than later. But we as women are warriors and we'll tough it out to the end! Chin up Mama! You got this!!!!
