Well that escalated quickly... Cerclage for me today!

Hi all,

I went in for my 20-week ultrasound this morning and everything looks good with Baby. I wanted a surprise and legs were crossed anyway so I'm already proud that he/she is cooperating!

Then the tech said that my cervix was "dynamic" (turns out this is not a complement!). It was nice and long at some points but then pretty short at others. She said 1.4cm at one point. So they called my OB and his office immediately said bed rest, which totally caught me off guard. I have a busy month at work and am already feeling behind. I have a desk job but they put their foot down and said Netflix only.

So on our way home my OB called and told me that he spoke with a high risk OB and she instructed me to go to the hospital and potentially get a cerclage. There doesn't seem to be any funnelling (opening) of the cervix yet and no labour signs so now is the time to do it.

It won't be done until after 4pm at the earliest (3+ more hours) and I can't eat or drink until after. I haven't eaten since breakfast so I'm thinking I'll be hangry pretty soon.

I'm only freaking out intermittently at this point because viability at 20 weeks is nil but there are no other signs of labour. Any positive vibes, good gifs, or hilarious stories to keep me entertained would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Well that escalated quickly... Cerclage for me today!

  • I'm sorry you are going through this. I have no experience with any of this, but I'm glad that your doctor has caught this in time to do something about it before it becomes too serious.

I totally get the work thing, would you be able to work from bed remotely? I would get stressed from the unease of not being able to work.

Will they at least give you ice chips so you can pretend that you are eating? It's a clear fluid, but if water is a no, I'd me way way WAY more than hangry by the time they are done!

Good luck with everything today and I'm sure all will go well :) at least there is Netflix, I don't even remember life before Netflix.

  • Prayers for you today! My cousin has had 2 perfect pregnancies with a cerclage both times! It's definitely scary but works wonders in keeping the cervix strong.
  • That's stressful for you! Take it one step at a time, and I'm sure you'll be able to figure out work and everything else in good time. I hope it goes well this afternoon. I'll be thinking of you

  • My aunt had this for three of her four pregnancies - and had healthy babies who are now adults in school. And I don't think she was on bed rest for very long afterwards (certainly not the rest of her pregnancy), so maybe you'll be able to get up and about again after the procedure and everything is under control!
  • Woah. Serious escalation! Sending thoughts and prayers your way and hoping no one says any thing dumb to you while you are starving to death. Feel free to lash out on random people. So glad they caught this though and can give you a fix. You got this!!
  • No experience just wanted to let you know I'll be thinking of you & hope all goes well! Fx that your bed rest is short lived!

  • Oh that sounds less than fun but it does sound like they're being cautious and just making sure they do everything to make sure baby is completely safe! Sorry about the bedrest, that sucks :(
  • That did escalate! FX bed rest is very short term.

  • A friend of mine needed a cerclage for both of her pregnancies, and delivered two healthy babies! Hopefully the bed rest is short-term, and they let you eat soon!

  • I had a cerclage done in December. I was put under and was home 3 hours after it was done. Rest for 24 hours and no heavy lifting from then on. Also, nothing "vaginally" for a week. Did they explain what it is? Mine drew me a picture lol
  • Oh no! That did escalate quickly. :( I'm glad they took action and hope you rest well. FX for a good outcome and quick recovery.
  • Holy! What an unexpected turn of events, eh? Glad to hear baby is doing well and I really hope your bed rest is short term!
  • Well.  We will always be here to entertain you.

I am so sorry for the news and will be sending prayers!!  Hugs to you!!

  • Wow.  Completely unexpected but you should do great since they are acting on it and protecting you and baby so early and not letting it go.  Be compliant with bed rest!  Hopefully it will be short.  Good luck with the procedure.

  • Yikes, that did escalate quickly! I'm hoping that by now your procedure went off without a hitch, and you've had a chance to see doctors in person to get a more thorough explanation of what to expect for the next few months. Hang in there.

If you don't have a nook or a kindle have someone pick one up at the store for you. That was an absolute lifesaver for me during my month long bed rest. It was nice being able to download another book when I was done!
  • Maybe, also, the high risk board could provide some insight into how long or necessary bed rest is. I think this is a fairly common issue. I hope you get a little rest in the interim but that you get good news at the high risk. I echo that I've heard of many a healthy baby born with this cervix issue.
