NBR: I'm in a wedding. Thoughts?

Some of our friends are getting married in September and they asked DH and I to be in their wedding way before we got pregnant.

Anyway, the bride is wanting to get a jump on bridesmaids dresses and wants us to get them pretty soon here. It'll be about 3 months after I have the baby so I'm not sure what to expect as far as my body goes. Should I go a size bigger than my pre baby size? 2 sizes? I'm hoping I'll be close to my original weight but this point but you never know, lol. As a FTM I know that's probably wishful thinking.

I also have no idea what the dress looks like. All I know is that it's purple. She said she'd send us a link but hasn't yet.

  • I hear your pain.  I have 6 weeks until I am standing in a wedding and went two sizes up.  Everyone is different.  You may be right back to normal, you may be a size or two larger.  If you BF, your bust is likely going to be larger.  I would probably go a size up from what you are now...

  • I would go a few sizes bigger. Bridesmaids dresses are cut a little on the small side and it is cheaper to take them in then to let them out.  If you a getting the dress at some place like Davids Bridal you can ask what is the latest you can order the dress so you will have a better idea of what your size will be.  I'm in a wedding in April and I have not bout the dress yet since I will be almost 32 weeks at the time.
  • Bridesmaid dresses tend to run small anyway - I'd go 2 sizes up and you can always have it taken in if you're smaller by then!

  • I will be the Best Women in a wedding a month before my Due Date.  I had to order the dress before last week and got 3 sizes bigger.  Here is blog that broke it down pretty well for me.  She has tips on after baby dresses too https://www.weddingshoppeinc.com/blog/index.php/2013/11/10/pregnant-bridesmaid-dress-shopping-mmz/

  • I was in a wedding 4 months after DS and wore a size up on a non BM dress. I definitely still had a bump and looked a little pregnant. It was also not very pumping or nursing friendly which was a pain but worked out.

I'm in my other sisters wedding this time about 4 weeks after. I picked a flowly nursing friendly dress!
DS 9/2/13 was a BFP from an IUI!
Triplets due 6/29/16 also from an IUI!

  • I was thinking about doing the 2 sizes up but wasn't sure if that was too extreme.

@NicknShan I didn't even think about the boobs. I really hope the dress isn't strapless...

    Thanks ladies!
  • I was in a wedding a few months after delivery with my first and my chest was my only concern. My boobs get huge when I'm pregnant and while I'm nursing. I went up 2 sizes for my dress. It depends on the cut of the dress too. Mine was long and flowed so post baby tummy wasn't a concern.

  • I would go 2 or 3 sizes up. You can always alter down a size or two if needed.

Wow, and I here I am worrying about dresses for a wedding I'll be in nearly 10 months after the baby is here. I have no advice to offer except to say that a good tailor fixes all.
  • I'll be in a wedding 4-6 weeks after I give birth... And I am so lucky that the bride has no requirements for a special dress. I'll buy some fancy nursing dress as close to the date as possible. Have no idea how this is going to go, lol.
For my first, I left the hospital lighter than I was before I got pregnant (due to extreme weight loss during the first tri), but my body was shaped so differently.
  • I was a bridesmaid during my last pregnancy. My grandma is an excellent seamstress and was able to give my dresse what she lovingly called a "bump pocket". It was so subtle that I have actually worn the dress since, at my pre pregnancy size and you couldn't even tell.

  • I would say go a size up and get a good pair or two of spanx. Boobs will be bigger for sure but with a spanx everything else should be maneagable although everyone is different.

  • Lurking from August.

I just had to order a bridesmaid dress this weekend for a wedding in October (two months after I'm due). I was hoping I could wait, but they wanted them order at least 6 months ahead of time. I was able to get a corset closure instead of a zipper so that it wouldn't be a big deal if the fit wasn't perfect. It only cost $15 more at this specific place and seemed like a great alternative.
  • I'm a bridesmaid in September too! Happy to see in not the only one wondering thing... I was thinking of taking my measurements now before I get too big?

  • I had 2 pregnant bridesmaids in my wedding. I let them pick their own dresses in my color, and they both went with empire waists and I think up a size or two.
  • @laurenm2123 I kind of thought about that too. I have a little bit of a belly going on so I thought that might be comparable with what's going on 3 months after baby.

  • Dang girl, that is a real pickle.
I guess I agree with the other posters, just go a size up and hope for the best. :-/

  • I literally went up 4 sizes for the wedding we have in August. Would rather buy a tent and have it taken in than not have it fit me.

  • This is the dress if that changes anybody's opinions. It looks flowy-ish so I'm hoping ordering it a couple sizes bigger will suffice.

  • I agree with PPs, ordering 1 or 2 sizes larger should give you enough wiggle room, and you can easily have it tailored down that much if you need. If you have the option to wait to order until after the baby comes, I would (you'll have a better idea at that point of how many sizes up is likely), but if not, you should be all right.

  • After seeing the dress, I think two sizes up should probably do it.  The dress looks flowy enough to cover any extra baby weight remaining over that. I agree with others that it is far easier to take a dress in than to let it out too.
  • My bestie is getting married 2 months after baby is due. I ordered up 3 sizes from my wedding measurements (we are getting our dresses from the same shop I got my wedding dress/bridesmaids dresses from) and I'll have it taken in if I lose more weight than that. :)

  • I am in a wedding in September as well!! This should be interesting..lol.  I just ordered my dress and I ordered one size up from what I am now. I figured that with nursing I will need a size up.   You may want to go 1-2 sizes up, as it is easier to take in than try and figure out how to let out.  We will all have to post our wedding pics.  The dress that my friend picked is not very flattering to extra pudge..oh well, the baby will be worth it!
  • I'd check the return policy to make sure, but we had a similar situation a year ago. We were able to order two dresses in different sizes and then as the date got closer, we could return the dress we didn't need as long as we had the receipt. It may be the best option? Otherwise I agree with PP that say 2 sizes up should be fine.

All of the other girls I've met so far in this wedding are sizes 0 - 2 so I was VERY nervous awaiting the link to the dress. I'm not big by any means but what looks good on a size 2 doesn't always look good on a size 8-10, especially 3 months after giving birth. I'm so glad the dress has some flow.

I ended up ordering 2 sizes up from a 10 which is what my wedding dress was and it was very fitted. Dang brides wanting women of child bearing age in their weddings. *shakes fist*
