Exercise?

I'm 3 weeks pp and feeling pretty great, mostly I think because I felt so awful while pregnant. I know we are suppose to wait untill 6 weeks to really start exercising. So far I have been doing keagles and slowly more house work. Are there any other easy exercises that are safe to be doing now? I was told light ab exercises at d/c but didn't think to ask what that meant. What is everyone else doing?

Re: Exercise?

  • I'm doing a lot of walking with my LO, we both feel much better after a walk. Means I can go at my own pace!
  • Loading the player...
  • Hip bridges and pulling your belly button towards your spine on an exhale are both good therapeutic ones that are good for pelvic floor and abdominal recovery. I am also walking.
  • I'm 3.5 weeks out. I've been walking a lot and just started lifting light weights yesterday. I haven't done any ab work yet because I haven't met with my OB. I feel really good though and don't really want to wait another 2.5 weeks for the official ok.
  • I have been walking more and more every day. i always make sure I drink lots of water and listen to my body's signals. I think that when it comes to getting back into the swing that is the best thing to do.

  • I've been doing a lot of walking and squats with DD.
  • Doing some walking when I can, but I'm paranoid I'm over exerting myself. I had a c section 3.5 weeks ago and I've had a resurgence of bright red blood. Anyone else have that?
  • I was 4w PP yesterday. Im going to the gym this Saturday and Sunday to walk on the treadmill and do a little lifting.
  • Between lugging the carseat, running up and down several stories with endless loads of laundry, carrying 40 things at once, at least one of which is alive, shooing cats away from the downstairs portable bassinet, all with a moby-wrapped infant strapped to my chest during which I'm burning the same number of calories as an athlete JUST from breastfeeding alone, I feel like i can afford to slack on exercise.

I do miss swimming though. I plan to return as soon as i can safely assume i won't bleed in the water or anything.
  • @Court11152325 You mean vaginal, not from the incision, right? My OB said bleeding might come and go for 6 weeks. I've had the same thing happen. No need to worry unless it's excessive is what I understand. But if you feel like you're overdoing it, definitely slow down. And dont feel bad about it -- you had major abdominal surgery!

Yes me too- if you mean vaginal. My ob just said to take it easy. That was right around 3 wks. I'm almost 4 weeks now & it stopped again.
My exercise for now is bf, walking & keeping up with my 5-yr-old.
  • I did mean vaginal and mine comes and goes. After a slow short walk I have it. I have an appt on Tuesday, so I'm definitely running it by my doctor
  • Going on a walk everyday for sanity. I am proud of myself that I can go with the baby in the stroller and two dogs. Other than that, lots of stretchibg. Did lunges on yesterday's walk. It feels so good to not be out of breathe and feel awful! Loving the great outdoors
  • No walking here at least outside. I'm in northern PA and our winter is finally starting. It's 4 this morning :# brrr. I did play with the big kids in the snow when it got up to 30 the other day.

  • Anyone have suggestions for sports bras that are nursing mom friendly for higher impact activities like running? I'm a D/DD now which is quite the change from my pretty small per-pregnancy cup size. I am mostly concerned with adequate support and not a pain to get the bra on and off (feeding access would be nice but isn't a requirement).
  • @TomekiaB I actually got a decent supportive sports bra from Motherhood - I'm a large C/small D. And it has nursing access.
  • @Court11152325 which one did you get? I see the sports clip down?
  • I am 4 weeks PP. I felt great immediately after delivery so when I got home from the hospital I starting doing housework right away even though I was advised not to. Also I've also been taking walks twice a day with my dog and baby. Haven't started any weight lifting yet but I plan to soon and I am anxious To get back in to my beach body workouts.
  • @TomekiaB I just looked on their website and I don't see the one I got from there. :(
  • Lugging the car seat is a lot of work. DH is slowly building a gym in the garage so when I'm cleared I'll start with light weights and walks.

@TomekiaB I just bought a sports bra from VS and got a free pair of sport leggings. It was around $35 so not too bad!
  • I went back to running at 2 weeks PP because I felt mostly normal. It's my little bit of sanity right now. I just take it slow and listen to my body.
  • I may shove extra cookies in my mouth, that counts right?

Also I got my bras from motherhood maternity.
  • I started running at 3 weeks. Just short 2 mile runs for now, but as PP said, it keeps me sane. After I had DS my midwife told me 6 weeks and I looked at her like she was crazy. She said I could start earlier if I felt OK, and that I would know if it was too soon. So I started back at 3 weeks then too and it was fine.

I started walking at 6 weeks, I was itching to start earlier but my c section incision developed a seroma at 4 weeks... I live in Minnesota and it's too cold to get outdoors most days so Averie and I have been walking the Mall of America about 3x a week... Just this week I did a low impact aerobic video while baby wearing which added 10.5 lbs to my workout! Finally starting to feel like myself again
  • My doc said I could do planks and Pilates/yoga type stuff now! 4weeks PP.
  • My doc said the vaginal bleeding picking up is natures way of telling you that you may be doing too much ;). We have been going on hikes with LO. I feel fine 3 weeks post c-section and I am really wanting to try to run some this coming week.
  • Bringing this back now that our babes are a little bit older. I have a history of anxiety,  so exercise is really important for me.

My plan to run isn't going very well because it's dark by the time DH gets home.  We're casually perusing Craigslist for a treadmill, but it doesn't look promising. We take DD hiking on the weekends -- she had her first summit last Saturday :)

I'd love to do some kind of weights or video program while DD is napping.  Does anyone have a good resource for this?  I'll probably do yoga videos,  but something else for toning would be nice.

Also,  our YMCA looks really good and I've thought about joining after DD gets her shots.  Any moms out there have experience with gym childcare?

If anyone is looking for yoga videos,  btw, Yogis Anonymous has online classes for $15/month
  • I have been trying the 30 day trial for Daily Burn. So far, I've enjoyed the workouts and the fact that I can stream it to any device, so I can work out in the same room where baby sleeps or not. The workouts are varied, and there's plenty of extra features. I think after the free month the subscription is $12.95/month which is do-able.

I find that getting the timing right is my biggest challenge. Putting baby down, changing as fast as possible, working out, toweling off, changing again, and grabbing a glass of water has to be precise and efficient if I want to make it through the whole workout.

I I know we discussed sports bras earlier in this thread, but now that we're getting cleared for exercise, does anyone have a recommendation for a rather busty (36 H) momma?
  • I haven't done much in the form of exercise but now I've stopped losing weight and I'm still 15 lbs over my pre pregnancy weight so I'm really motivated to start. I just purchased a jogging stroller which my infant car seat clicks into and started walking a mile a day around the park that's down the street. I'm still a little sore down there so just as soon as I'm better I'll increase the distance although I probably won't jog for a little while for DS's safety. I also plan on doing strength training at home with my free weights.
On rainy days I'm doing my Zumba on Xbox which gets me sweating :)

I've always been able to lose weight easily so my goal is to be back at my pre-pregnancy weight by March.
  • At 5 weeks PP, today was my very first day of actual exercise.  I held Odie in my arms and did lunges and squats. I was only able to do ten before feeling exhausted. I have been taking the little man with me on daily walks since 1 week post partum. Like PPs have said it feels really good to just walk. If you search pinterest for Post Partum Workouts there are tons of ideas that are there to tighten tummy and repair our poor abs.

  • So, just posting this because it is what I am going to do and I think it is going to work out good for me to do while DD naps. I don't know if anyone has heard of Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide, but check her out on Instagram. They're about 30 minutes and at home workouts you do at your own pace MWF and try to walk on the off days. Nothing to stressful and you guys should see these peoples results!! Put in #bbgmoms on Instagram and you will be very motivated! It's all kinds of everyday moms seeing great results with these guides! I am starting Monday so we will see!
  • I'm going back to pure barre classes starting Monday (3.5 weeks pp). I'll take it easy to begin with and probably keep up a lot of the modifications I made when I was pregnant. This is totally for my sanity and less for getting back in shape, though I hope it will do a little of that too! My doctor had no problem clearing me for exercise as long as I listened to my body. He said a lot of women underestimate what they went through and continue to go through (sleep deprivation for example) and overdo it because they feel normal. He also said if you're breastfeeding and exercising, you need to be drinking like an obscene amount of water to not get dehydrated. Both good points that I probably would not have thought of and landed myself in the hospital or something...
  • I started working out a bit after 4 weeks and ran a mile at the gym. It was the worst feeling ever. I was very in shape before and gained close to 60#. Have about 25 to go to get back to pre pregnancy weight. But the running was aweful. I kept with it though and felt closer to normal working out about 2 weeks later. That includes lifting weights and starting ab exercises again.abs are slowly getting stronger.
  • I started doing Jamie Eason's post pregnancy workout when I was cleared at 6 weeks.  I enjoy it because it doesn't take much time and sets realistic goals.  Some days even finding 30 minutes is rough, especially now that I am back at work!
  • @caketimes and anyone else looking for sports bras, I just watched an episode of Shark Tank and one of the entrepreneurs was selling an adjustable and supportive sports bra. It was actually quite genius and also zippers in front which could help this who are bfing. I just ordered so I cannot speak from personal experience but I'm hoping it will be really supportive...I'm trying to stop having to wear a minimum of 3 bras to my tap class. Once I get it and try it, I will update you!
