New Girl! Introducing myself

Hi all!

Just wanted to take a minute to say hello! And to say that we have been trying, blindly, on our own to get pregnant for 19 months. I know that isn't very long compared to some of the other people who are trying. In the meantime, I have filled our home with pets! We have three cats and a beautiful Great Pyrenees named Apollo. We are abnormally happy, and so excited to start a family, but have just grown tired of trying to figure this out on our own. DH and I have been together for 8 years, but married for just about 2 of those, and just decided to have "the talk" with my OBGYN right before Christmas.

When I came off of birth control in May 2014, my OBGYN was very clear and told me to not be concerned until we had been trying a year. We had a little more patience and didn't consult with her until right around 17 months. She sent me for blood work, referred DH to a urologist for an SA. My bloowork was done on CD 23 and we learned that my free testosterone is high. She prescribed me 50 mg of clomid for 3 months and we would repeat blood work to see if that would help. Unfortunately, I got THREE pills into my first month, and woke up in extreme pain. Diagnosed with ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome and immediately taken off of clomid. So, needless to say, we are taking this month off!

Had an ultrasound on Monday, dr. Confirmed that the cysts had burst, and I would continue to improve. She also informed us that in the ultrasound, she found that I have a septate uterus. She referred me to an RE at a local fertility clinic, and we see her on Feb 02... So, we are just getting into an even more complicated part of this journey, and find we are more anxious and worried than ever. Of course, mostly about cost, but also what is this septate uterus and what does it mean to us? I've never been pregnant, so I'm not sure what this referral means for us... Ah, well! Long post over, and that's our confusing journey thus far. I'm looking forward to learning more here, and sharing as much as I can with all of you. I've been keeping all of this to myself for way too long!

Married February 2014

Me:34 DH: 34
TTC since May 2014

Jan. 2016: 1st round of Clomid - stopped due to OHSS

Feb 2016: 1st RE apt - diagnosed with PCOS still possible uterine septum. Put on BC for cysts, HSG will be in March

March 2016: HSG showed both tubes blocked (right tube holding fluid), no uterine septum, need surgery

April 2016:  Surgery to remove right (hydrosalpinx) fallopian tube and adhesions from the left - all went well!

May 2016: Waiting to start 3 months of un-monitored cycles in July with metformin and letrozole. If no success, going straight to IVF!

Re: New Girl! Introducing myself

  • Hi there! Glad you've joined us. I'm surprised she diagnosed you with a uterine septum from an ultrasound. It usually needs an MRI, or at least an HSG, and/or laparoscopic surgery to diagnose. I had a uterine septum, which was not discovered until years after we had been TTC. I had it surgically removed about a year and a half ago. I haven't gotten a BFP yet, but have other fertility problems. You don't HAVE to have it removed, but there is a very high rate of miscarriage if you don't. The surgery was pretty simple. It's definitely good you're seeing an RE though. Keep us posted!

  • Hi! I had a transvaginal ultrasound, which I was not able to see the results of myself. So, I'm not sure what the results even looked like lol She did say to me, I'm not aware of these (the septum) preventing pregnancy, but I'm going to refer you to a fertility clinic. And that was it... Kind of strange. So, I FULLY expect to have to go thru the gamut at this new Dr. I had my records sent over to the RE today, and I guess we will see how it goes on 02/02! Thank you for the welcome and info!

  • Hi there!  Welcome to one of the best boards on thebump!  So glad that you've started this process and hopefully you will find an RE that you like at your upcoming appt.  It can be long and daunting, but know that there is a team of women (and men) here to listen to you and share their ideas.
  • Hello and welcome. Sorry you have to be here. I'm sorry you have take a month off. I also have to take a month off due to financial and prior obligations and all I want is to keep trying... Some people say a break from the emotions are good I've had 3 failed iuis so. I'm pretty new to the boards as well. I've found them supportive and informative. I hope you find some comfort here. Take care and GL.
  • Welcome! If I've learned anything here, it's that you don't have to compare how long you've been trying. Honestly, TTC when you don't know why your not getting pregnant (or you have a diagnosis) is the most infuriating thing in the world! No matter if you've been trying 6 moths or 10 years, it's stressful! We're so glad you've joined us here! It's helped me A LOT to talk to other women who know what I'm going through!

  • @sapreenamaree - My RE told me that it COULD prevent pregnancy, depending on the size, location, etc., but it said it was more associated with miscarriages. Since your appt with the RE is not until 2/2, you could request your OB/GYN to go ahead and order an HSG so you could have those results when you see the RE (they will probably want one anyways). It will get a better look at your uterus and tubes. My OB/GYN was happy to order all those necessary tests before I met with the RE for the first time. You might also have her run day 3 labs (FSH, LH, Estradiol) if you get your period before your appt on the 2nd.

This is just my suggestion...keep in mind that it is coming from someone who is slightly on the anxious side and hates waiting! :)

  •  @2015dee I too, HATE waiting. however, I am trying my best to just let go. I tend to become over obsessive, and I promised DH that I would TRY to go into the RE appointment with a different attitude. He is so infinitely calm and patient, it truly is a blessing to have him around. I, however, am a control freak Libra who cannot believe that I wasn't able to plan having a baby down to the T! lol At 34, I'm afraid this over-achieving personality trait is ingrained and it's a little harder to over look than I thought...

@wendyp I was at first disappointed about taking the month off, possibly next month too, depending on the next Dr visit. I do find a break from the routine of the last 19 months refreshing. However, I wish it wouldn't have come due to being diagnosed with OHSS. That part... could have done without. But, I'm on the mend now, and happy to be out of those woods.

Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome, advice, and just reading my ramblings. Looking forward to where this journey will take us, I hope after the next visit, we will have some answers. I love my OBGYN, but having obsessed over what the procedure was for fertility testing, I just felt like her approach was totally different than I expected. I think I'm probably headed to the place where we need to be.

  • Welcome!  I'm glad you found us and don't have to "suffer in silence" anymore, which I know a lot of us can relate to.  I hope you get your diagnostics figured out soon!
    ***BFP & Child Warning***

    Me: 34, DH: 38 ~ TTC since 2014
    IUI #1-3 (Nov 2015, Feb 2016, May 2016) = BFNs
IVF ER (July 2016) = 7 PGS normal embryos
    FET #1 (Sept 2016) = BFP! DD born 5/30/17
    FET #2 (April 2019) = BFN
    FET #3 (July 2019) = BFP! DS born 3/27/20
  • Welcome!!! I hope that you get to the bottoms of this's asap, with a BFP to follow shortly there after!
  • @Sapreenamaree - welcome! 17 months is certainly a long time. I know some people are wary of complaining just because others have been trying longer, but everyone's pain is valid. I remember even myself at 6 months going ballistic (though I'm a little melodramatic perhaps haha). We can always compare our lives/journeys to others who have it worse, but don't allow that to diminish how you are feeling and the emotions/struggle you are experiencing, as that's very real. Big hugs.

On a separate note. So sorry about the cysts. Ouch. Try thinking about moving to an RE as less "scary" and more "hopeful". They are the experts in the field, and even though it can feel overwhelming at first, realize that you're in the best hands possible in order to give you success. Going to see an RE will mean more testing (A good thing as it should give you more answers) and then treatment is entirely at your discretion. They will advise you but the decision of what you're comfortable at every step along the way is yours. And we're all here for advice/support if you need it.

Feel free to read my blog as I'm gearing up for another cycle as we speak right now and you can see pics of me at docs and hear about what it entails. Feel free to message me anytime as well. The ladies on this forum are all incredibly supportive and knowledgable, so you've found an amazing support network here. Welcome!
