VBAC anyone? I know it's early in the game...

I know it's early to think of this, but I really want to try a VBAC. Problem is I was told they strongly suggest a repeat c-section.  With my 1st I labored for 16 hrs and ended up with a section when my labor stalled and her heart rate dropped.  During the section when they were taking her out I had a uterine tear along the incision, so now they want me to have another section. Anyone been told they need to have a repeat section but had a VBAC anyhow???

Re: VBAC anyone? I know it's early in the game...

  • With my last I was going to try for a VBAC but in the end I opted for a r/c.  I was being induced at 36 weeks and didn't want to stress him and end up with an emergency c/s like his brother.   Had I gone into labor on my own I would have tried a VBAC.   This one will also be a r/c as I want to get my tubes ties right away.  I will say my recovery was a lot better with a planned c/s and I remember so much more of it!

If you really want to try for a VBAC I would call around to different OBs and find one that is pro VBAC.  I had to do that when I wanted to try.

  • I had a great vbac experience! It's all about luck and you have to weigh the risks and benefits for you. My first was a stat c-section for placental abruption, 11 days late, and she also weighed 9 lbs 11oz. I was a good vbac candidate because I never got to the pushing stage with her; however, no OBs around me will induce a vbac (nor would I have wanted to) so the massive baby along with being 11 days late weren't good signs. My second was breech until 36.5 weeks so I had my repeat c section scheduled at 40 weeks but she magically flipped. A late growth ultrasound showed that she wasn't likely to be as big as her sister. It was STRESSFUL waiting for labor to start before my new repeat section date at 41 weeks, and of course worrying about the vbac itself. Luckily I went into labor in my own and delivered her without pitocin (but with a lovely epidural) at 40w3d. She was only 8 pounds 7 oz, healthy and my recovery was much better. I'm hoping for a second vbac this time around.

Oh and I did switch doctors from one who was okay with vbacs to one who was very supportive.

Oh and I started talking about a vbac on my first baby's birthday so it's never too early.

Edit: ah, tb is killing me. It keeps eating half my comment and now I realize it's because of a winking face I kept trying to put in. Imagine a wink up there. The gist of the rest of the comment was that I wanted to attempt to vbac because my husband and I are open to the idea of having 5+ kids and I didn't want 5+ sections!

  • I labored for 24 hours and pushed for 3 hours after being unsuccessful with the suction to get our oldest out due to a small birth canal, his heart rate dropped causing me to have a c/s. We are military and were stationed in Italy where the base didn't have VBAC capabilities so repeat it was. I was fine with it and knew what to expect. I'm not going to push for a VBAC this go round because like my first, my second didn't drop into the birth canal so repeat again for me. I wish you the best of luck!!

  • My first was born via c-section after failure to progress. I was in labor for 36 hours and never dilated past 5 cm. My second was born via VBAC almost exactly a year later. They are 1 year and 8 days apart. My doctors also said they were supportive of the VBAC plan but often made me feel otherwise. It took a lot of my own advocating and simply knowing when to put my foot down. I was lucky that none of them were the delivering doctor on call for my VBAC. The doctor who delivered was amazing. She pretty much cheered me on the whole time and wanted a successful VBAC just as much as I did. My plan is to try for another VBAC with #3.

  • As a labor and delivery RN, I know VBAC can be very successful as my hospital has a 85% successful VBAC rate . But I also know too much and all that can go wrong even if it's the 2%!
I labored for 26 hrs in intense labor and got to 4cm then high temp so I asked for a csection ( more like begged!). The recovery was fine but I don't want to go to that csection room again. I'm very claustrophobic and it was the worst experience. I see it everyday but being on the patients side is a whole different view . I'm definitely going for s VBAC but with my own educated set of rules bc I know at points it's safer for me and the baby todo the cesarean
  • I labored for 32 hours got to 8 cm and then stalled. I spiked a fever so they did a c/s. My ob is very supportive of vbacs and has a high success rate as well does the hospital. She is scheduling me for a rsc at 39 weeks since the success rate lowers for vbacs after that but if I go into labor on my own I can try for a vbac. I went into labor at 37w 4d with DS so I'm hopeful I get that chance to try again
