ER - are you guys knocked out?

Hi!

Just a wee question as I read on some discussion that your ER happens in an OR, that you need time to wake up, ...
So I start to wonder, do you ladies go under anesthisia?

I would understand as it's the worse pain I ever had!

Re: ER - are you guys knocked out?

  • I was fully sedated for my ER. And then I had probably the second worst pain of my life. I could barely get up from the couch the following day. I thought it was a requirement to go under anesthesia as they are sticking a giant needle into your vagina and through your uterus to your ovaries. One move and you've got major problems.

  • I was wondering the same thing.

@AandDM2014 - it's not general anesthesia though, right? Probably just heavy sedation with Ativan or Versed or something like that? Sounds scary!!

  • When I only had 2 follicles to retrieve I wasn't knocked out but for the other retrievals I was. It was not pleasant being awake but I did get to go home much sooner.

  • I see..that explains the stories. I didn't want to ask in the other discussions as that was never the point/reason why the discussion started.

But got confused as mine was with a little shot of morphine, 19 follicles and already hitting the ceiling out of pain by just the ultrasoundwand.
I was very, very happy my mum was with me.
I did wander around town afterwards and did some sightseeing...but think I was just on auto-pilot. And didn't want to show my mum how much it hurts.
But it was a pain so intense I can't compare with anything I ever felt before. Even my biopsy of my cervix seemed like a walk in the park after this.

  • @2015dee, Nope, fully sedated under general anesthesia. That is how my clinic does all ERs. It wasn't super bad, though it was only my second time going under (first for polyp removal just a few weeks prior). I was prepared for the side effects, and so was the nursing staff and DH. I get really really weepy, like full on crying-for-your-mom weepy (though I cry to see DH).

  • I was NOT under anesthesia, but sedated. I was in severe pain though.. yet loopy so couldn't really communicate. It was a horrible experience for me honestly. If given the choice, I'd go under for the next time. They're putting me to sleep for my upcoming biopsy because of how bad my body felt during the ER in the past. Not to scare anyone, but good to be mentally prepared. It's not too too bad, we tough infertiles can handle it and over quick, but definitely not pleasant when just sedated.

  • I was completely out but woke up pretty quickly . Not in the OR but in the recovery area maybe 5-10 min after the procedure was done . I would have lost it had I been awake ! I'm a weenie

  • I was under the happy juice as well. Certainly experienced some discomfort post-surgery, but nothing compared to the discomfort of OHSS. The 10 minutes before they put me out I wanted my husband to knock me unconscious!
  • I was put into a twilight like state. The first retrieval they must have given me more of the good stuff because I was totally out but the second time I could still hear the doctors and nurses talking but I was out of it and didn't feel anything. The only pain I had was a couple days following the retrieval. Nothing too bad just discomfort.
  • I was completely awake, just a shot of morphine.
I could see everything as they had 3 screens, and one placed for me and my mum to see.
Was very interesting to see the needle, how it entered every follicle and than you saw it suck out the fluid.
Heard a 'ja' every time the lab got an egg.
And I kinda knew when the pain would come by looking at the screen.

It's interesting to hear how different they do the treatment from country to country. Must admit that I wouldn't mind being sedated more should I need to go again!

  • I was totally out for my ER, but it's not general anesthesia, so you don't need a ventilator or anything and you come out of it pretty quick.  I remember the drugs they gave me made my arm feel like it was burning and about 2 seconds later the ceiling started to swim and I don't remember anything after that.  I was under similar anesthesia before for my hysteroscopy, but that one is more like I just don't remember what happened.

I can't imagine doing the ER awake or with that much pain.  If you're in pain, tell your doctor/nurse!  Don't just suck it up!!  There could be complications they need to address, or at the very least, take advantage of the awesome drugs that are available.

After my ER, I was fine to go into the office the next day though I took the entire day off after my ER to rest and lay around.  I was a little bloated and crampy, but nothing worse than PMS.
  • I was completely asleep for the procedure. I was awake within 5-10 minutes after. I was in a lot of pain after I woke up so they gave me an iv of pain meds. I had Tylenol that day and took it easy on the couch with a heating pad. I was able to go to work the next day.
  • I was knocked out cold with "the Michael Jackson drug". It knocked me out in 7 seconds! The writhing pain I was in when I awoke made me so grateful I was out. I also insisted on Vicodin over IB profun and boy did I need it. Since we were freezing for PGS testing, it was okay to take Vicodin. I can't imagine being lucid during this procedure.
  • On another note, I was completely ummedicated for my second hysteroscopy (which ended up needing a polyp removed). I forgot to take an IB profun and OUCH! Not fun at all!!!!
  • I was under general anesthesia for my retrieval
  • It's so interesting to hear how different treatments are.
    Thank you for sharing!

I actually wished I was under completely, but they don't do that in Scandinavia.
Do know next time (hope there isn't a next time) that I'll ask for more morphine and relax afterwards!
