Re: Anyone remember a thing called sleep?!

  • I have a distant memory of needing to take Benadryl to fall asleep. And the only waking I would do in 8-9 hours is to go pee. Man, those were the days.

Not that I don't absolutely love my son.

    I am bored at work.

  • I'm tired. I'd love to sleep for more then 2 hours at a time.

He's really cute and this won't last forever.
  • My girl is two weeks old today and it feels right now like I may never sleep longer than 30 minutes ever again. It does get better right? Or is that a lie they tell new mothers?
  • Yeah my almost 6 week old surprised me the other day with 5 hours at night uninterrupted. Before the longest was 4. It isn't consistent however it gives me hope that it will get longer and longer. I freakin miss sleep. My DW is sick therefore quarantined in the guest bedroom so I've been taking care of LO by myself for 4 days. My DW wakes up this morning at almost 11 am! God I never thought I'd ever be envious of someone with a horrible cold lol.
  • I love hearing these encouraging stories. I'm so tired, but knowing that it might get better soon gives me hope.
  • Between pumping every three hours for our twins in the NICU, visiting the NICU twice a day, trying to keep regular life merely functioning, and driving my husband to doctors appointments for brain tumor treatments, I have no idea what sleep is anymore. Or how it feels to not be stressed out. :/
  • I have hope, ty everyone. At this point if she sleeps 2-3 hr stretches I'm ecstatic
  • With my first it was awful in the beginning. We only got sleep by switching off with each other, later only by having him in his swing. Then a period where he would sleep every other night and nights between were still vaguely nightmarish. I think by 4 months he was sleeping decent stretches in his crib and since then it's been uphill.

DD has her nights she gets fussy but at 7 weeks she sleeps roughly 4 hour stretches overnight so I'm getting a little better sleep. Sometimes I give her a last feeding after hubby gets home and he'll take her for a feeding so I'll get closer to 6 hrs-8 hrs. Sleep does return although it has yet to be the same as it was before kids. For one thing I find I don't sleep as much. Rarely can I make myself sleep more than 5-6 hours now and I used to need closer to 12 to function.
  • My little girl is sleeping 4-5 hours max at night and I'm loving it! Hopefully it just keeps getting better and not start going the other way..

So I don't want to jinx it, but after 5 weeks of NO sleep or very very very little, DD has been sleeping for 6-8 hours at night the last 4 nights. I feel like a million bucks! And literally a day before that I had broke down sobbing that I will never sleep again and that I will probably die of sleep deprivation. Please let this be the new normal!

Friday night I was crying because I was so exhausted from just everything. Saturday night DD slept from 10:00-4:30. I was so excited. DD is 7 weeks. Hang in there ladies!

  • Everyone is sleeping right now but me of course. I have to pump. Gaaahh, how I hate pumping!
  • Worst night ever...I've been trying to supplement with formula before bed but that's a huge no go! Makes my little man super gassy and wakes right up so our usual up every two hours turned into bed at 12 up at 2:30 and not back to bed until 4 then up again at 6:45. (By awake I mean screaming at the top of his little lungs)

I'm not impressed; usually we are in bed around 9:00 and he's up every two hours after that.

    I miss sleep!!!!!!!
  • My sleep issues aren't so much DS fault as my body. Initially it was terrible night sweats and waking up freezing. I still wake up and need to pump most nights (or sleep through a pump session and wake up in pain). Sometimes I wake up hungry and have to eat despite it only being 4-5am or I take advantage of having both hands and put away a load of laundry or dishes after pumping/BF because it is so much easier when DS is sleeping or DH is still home. The most significant time DS keeps me awake is when he wants to play around midnight (which is when he kicked nonstop during my pregnancy).
  • I had such horrible insomnia/ hip pain/ plus needing to pee all night while pregnant that I got less sleep then with a newborn. I survived with next to no sleep the last two months. Whatever I get now is way better! DD is 4 weeks and slept from 10:30-5 last night, thank you Jesus! I hope it happens again. It does get better for sure.

  • My LO is sleeping in 3 hours stretches, which do make for some tiring mornings and even tiring feeding sessions when DH or I, initially wake to change and feed him. He will be 5w tomorrow.  I will say though, because he's on this 3 hour, sometimes 3 1/2 hour stretch, it's a predictable schedule and that's helpful for us.

Question for any ladies who had preemies.  Did you find that because your LO was preemie, they didn't start sleeping for longer stretches until much later on?  I know every baby is different, but we have 1 friend who has preemie and he didn't start sleeping longer stretches or through the night until 4 months. She said that at about the 4 month mark was when he was only waking up once during the night for them. I was just curious to see if a general rule for preemies is, to expect their sleeping patterns to take longer to develop.
  • DS slept from 11:30-4:30 then 5:30-8! Thank you baby! It is amazing how just a little bit more sleep can make you feel like a million bucks!

I can't promise when it'll happen, but you will sleep again.

And then you'll forget all about these sleepless nights that you'll make the same mistake I did and get pregnant and relive it all over again...

At the moment the very thought terrifies me. If my dr would have agreed to tie my tubes during my two week exam I would have let her in a heart beat. Thankful she has ethics incase I'm insane enough to do this again
  • I sleep from 8 pm to around 1am. DH takes the 2 feedings so I can sleep.

I got my tubes tied on Friday. I guess my next sleepless nights will come when my 13 year old starts driving and dating... Gulp!

When your sweet babe starts giving you hugs and kisses and says "I love you", you're gonna forget all about the newborn stage.
