Short labors?

Anyone else have very short labors?
This will be my third, and my previous two I was only in labor for a little over 3 hours. They were both born two hours after arriving at the hospital. Although I was lucky with my second and it didn't go much faster than the first, I'm afraid this baby might. With my second i was able to recognize labor long before it was painful, so that probably got me at the hospital an hour earlier than I would have otherwise. I have my 12 week appt with my OB on Monday and plan on bringing it up then. Anyone else have this worry as well? Did your doctor do anything different than hope for the best?

Re: Short labors?

  • Wow! Those are crazy short labors! I thought I had a pretty short labor with my first (9 hours total with 6 of them being at the hospital.)

  • I'm with you DD I was in labor for about 2 and half hours for DS only about an hour and half unfortunately due to it being so quick I did not have time to get an epidural.
  • Mine weren't crazy short, 7 for my first and 4 (that I knew of for my second). I do assume this one will go fast, and I assume there will not be time for an epidural this time. As long as I make it to the hospital, I think all will be well.

Wow! That's awesome that your labors were short. I was 16 hours with DS and went all the way to 41 weeks. My doc said to expect to go over again, but that labor would be cut in half with the second. So that's a plus!

  • I wish. 19 hrs but wasn't actually as bad as I imagined. Wishful thinking this one goes quicker?

Me! With both kids I walked around dilated to 4 cm for a month before actually going into labor. Each time the OB told me "any day now!" but nothing until due date with DD and a week late with DS/#2. Prior I didn't even know that was possible. When I did go into labor (water broke followed by intense contractions with DD, and just intense contractions with DS) I showered then went to the hospital and was triaged at 9 cm. Pushed each right out. My OB with DD said I was the perfect candidate for the Oregon trail lol. Hop out of the wagon, have the kid, hop back in. I'll admit I'm nervous for #3 but grateful to have such precipitous labors.
  • With my daughter I had taken a nap and woke up with contractions, started timing them and left for the hospital shortly after I realized how close they were. With my son I woke up in the morning with contractions, started timing them while taking a hot bath... called the hospital and just told them I was coming, no waiting around for a call back! Lol I think if I'm awake when labor starts, I'll be ok, but apparently my body likes to sleep before giving birth, so it worries me I'll sleep through it again. And I'm not in pain until my water breaks, which both kids happened two hours before delivery. I'm hoping I'll have enough time for an epi, but not getting my hopes up. With my son the second I saw the nurse I asked for a drip before going over my paperwork, I told her we didn't have much time and thankfully she listened. My biggest worry now is that I will be home alone with my kids and I'll have to wait too long to get them taken care of and get someone to pick me up. I just want to make it to the hospital! @kattyleigh... I was dilated to 4 weeks before I had them too. My first was a month early and my second was almost 2 weeks early. Have no idea what to expect this time.
  • Dang, I thought my seven hours with DD was fast! I did only push for 7 minutes (and she was born on the 7th... 7 must be her lucky number! lol). It's good that you were able to recognize labor before it was painful last time. Do you live far from the hospital? Is your concern that you might not make it there in time?

  • We only live 15 minutes from the hospital, if there little traffic, but I'm afraid I will sleep through the non painful part and be home alone with my kids. Had my 12 w appt today and heard baby's hb! Asked my doctor and he said well have to see when we get there. Normally he would induce at 39 weeks if I was already dilated, but I have yet to carry that far. So if I don't see 39 weeks, we will just hope for the best! But it's looking like this baby will be a July baby, not August!
  • DS 1 took forever! 10am contractions started and he was born at 5am the following day! We had some complications but he turned out perfect! DS 2 was born 11 months later. I pushed 3 times and he was out! Labored for about 3 hours with him! 1 was a week early and 2 was 2 weeks early.. I am pregnant with twins so really hoping to be able to delivery vaginally for both and avoid a c section all together.
