I want to name my daughter Madeline, and I know how I will pronounce it, But I don't want to give her name (spelling wise) that is always miss pronounced. So I'm taking a poll to decide if I need to change the spelling. Please let me know when you see the name Madeline how you would pronounce it. Thanks in advance.

  • Personally, I think Mad-duh-line by reading that name. If you're wanting the lynn sound instead just change up the spelling a little. But essentially it is YOUR child, name her what you feel fit and just know it may take some correcting people years down the road but unfortunately now a days there are some names spelled so ridiculously its a wonder anyone gets them correct!
  • I agree with @vinerie it could be regional. I am from New England and would pronounce it mah-duh-LINE as spelled, but if it was spelled Madelyn I would pronounce it MAH-duh-lynn.

    Madeleine - Ma-duh-line

This is opposite of how I always see it where I'm from!
  • One of my assistants at work pronounces her name MAD A LYNN.
  • It's French and I grew up in Canada so we pronounce it Ma - deh - len (where the n at the end isn't a hard n, if that makes sense)

That name reminds me of the show so I pronounce it just like they do in the show lol

Ooops, I tied it with my vote, 50/50 now
  • If this were a girl, we were going to choose the name Adeline. It presented us the exact same issue, as we would pronounce it AD-A-LYNN and not AD-A-LINE. We were throwing around spelling it Adelyn, but I think we ultimately would have gone with the more traditional spelling. Sure, there may always be people that will pronounce it wrong, but those who know us would know the way we pronounce and would (I hope) do the same. :)

  • I said I'd pronounce it mada-Lynn simply because that's how the majority of people with this name that I personally know, pronounce their name. I truly feel though, from experience, that no matter what you choose as a name, it'll be mispronounced several times over. My name is Nina, pronounced KNEE-nuh, never met anybody with this name pronounced any differently. You'd be amazed at how many times my name has been mispronounced, misspelled, I've been asked if this is my "full" name. It's just how it goes. Go with how you want it pronounced and just be prepared for mispronounciation.
  • I would pronounce that spelling as Ma- duh- line. My name is spelt Madalyn and gives you the ma-duh-lynn pronunciation. ^-^
  • I'd pronounce it as mad a line

Wanted to second this and also to say, as a teacher, every first day of class every student needs to pronounce their names for me, regardless of what name it is.  Because I'm going to get it wrong.  Ok, I might get "Jack" wrong less often then Caroline (Cara-lynn or Carrow-line?) but there's always one student who throws me (at least).  Last year there was a Regina who pronounced it Regyna (like vagina) instead of Regeena.  I think she was Canadian.  I never asked.

If you like the name and want the traditional spelling, go for it:)
  • I'd pronounce it mad-a-lynn regardless of the spelling tbh, just because that's how the people I know with that name pronounce it.
  • I would personally read that spelling (as opposed to Madelyn) as "Ma-duh-LINE," but I think it's becoming more popular to pronounce it "Ma-duh-LYNN."
  • My name is Madilyn... Never had anyone say it as "line" if that helps!
  • Thanks everyone for the comments! You've given me a lot to think about!
  • now I have the songs from Madeline stuck in my head.  I believe I pronounce it that way soley off of the cartoon..  "Something is not right, something is verrrry wrong!" ugh, it's going to be a long night at work! :)
  • I named my first daughter Madeleine. I honestly didn't know that people pronounced Madeline "mad-a-lynn," I always thought it was "mad-a-line." As soon as we announced the name, there were problems with spelling. Tried to get around it by telling everyone we spell it the French way, but generally get confused looks when I say that. It gets mispronounced all the time, too. Met a gal at the park who's daughter is Madeline pronounced "lynn," she said she has problems too. I honestly don't think you can get around this issue if you choose the name. It's beautiful and I love it, and I've just learned to roll with it, but I had no idea it would be such an issue when we chose the name.
  • PS- In French, Madeleine is pronounced Mad-a-len, and that's actually how I say my daughter's name. Someone else said it was -line, which is I've never heard before.
