Postpartum bleeding-- doc says this is normal, but...

I'm now 2 weeks postpartum and I'm still having bright red bleeding with clots and the occasional gushes. After the first week it started to taper off like it's supposed to, but for the past few days I've had increased bleeding, filling a pad about every 2-3 hours maximum, and some cramping like a period. Like I said, it's bright red with small clots. From what I've looked up, this is NOT normal and I should be seen by the doctor. However, I checked with him today and he said it is normal but said he'd see me on Monday in his office. I've gotten myself freaked out about placental hemorrhage and other scary things. Any thoughts here? Thanks!

  • As always said on here: seek medical advice/attendance if you feel unsure about something. Better safe than sorry. But aside from that, my doctor said to call if I was having clots lemon size or larger or if I suddenly started having tons of clotting after none or very little. She said if I start bleeding more than normal it's because I'm doing too much and need to put my feet up. She also said I could bleed 4-6 weeks. So that's the advice I personally am following. I do have more bleeding some days than others, but I'm not worried about it. I just try to take it easy and keep an eye out for large clots.

  • What you are describing is always my normal after birth.  I bleed for a minimum of 5wks and the first 3-4 are bright red, crampy, and clotty.  It gets worse if I try to do too much, and too much can be something as simple as running more than one load of laundry, or a quick trip to get groceries.

  • I'm 10 days post - my bleeding was tapering off but then around day 7 picked back up and is bright red. No clots though and a bit less than a pad every 2-3 hrs. I was told to call if I had clots ping pong ball size or was filling a pad an hour. I posted on this last night, but I bleed when during/after a feeding session.
  • if you start to feel faint/dizzy/nauseous I would call the help line immediately and/or go to the ER to get checked out. Bleeding and passing clots is completely normal BUT only until it's not normal. :/
  • I bled bright red heavy for 6 weeks. As long as your clots aren't very large then I'd agree with your doctor and say 2 weeks is still in the normal range.
  • I'm still in the hospital but I passed a huge clot. Like I'm talking as big as a fist, my nurse said that sometimes sitting in the same position too long, causes blood to pool in one spot. Causing a big clot.
If you're sitting down a lot and not really up and moving, you could be clotting from that.
If you're really concerned, there's usually a number or hotline you can call.
