After labor birth control

Have any of you decided on what birth control you'll use after delivery or when the time comes. Counting on breast feeding is not wise, everyone has their first after baby period at different times and you don't have a cycle till after you ovulate. So there's no knowing when that will randomly happen.

I want to breastfeed so this will effect which birth control I use.

I got the Mirena at 6 weeks PP and I loved it. I did not notice a decrease in my milk supply, but I was supplementing , you can always get the paragard copper IUD that doesn't give off hormones to be on the safe side.

I'm breastfeeding, but definitely need some birth control. I have never been able to take pills effectively (hence my current DD), so I need to figure something out! I'm not sure how I feel about IUDs...I will definitely need some advice/options.

This is a subject I'm talking to my doctor about when I go to my pp checkup.
I do NOT want another baby ANY time soon. Love the LO but, no siblings for a few years.
I'm hoping she can give me some pointers and guidance on which is right for me.

I can't wait to see what others suggest. I don't live the idea of an IUD. I was on Depo before we decided to have a baby, but idk if you can get that while BF...? Prob something I should look up. I'm horrible with the pill too...and it gives me migraines...

I am horrible on hormonal birth control. I got a diaphragm after my first was born. You only use it when you need it and it can stay in for a while so there's no need to rush to get it out when you're done and if you anticipate sexy time you can put it in ahead of time so as not to spoil the moment. And since it's not hormonal it has zero affect on your supply.

After my boys I used a birth control pill for BF mothers. When I stopped BF I switched to a regular pill. This time I am getting a tubal. Do not just use BF as birth control. My nephews are 11 months apart because this is what my sister did.

I got nexplanon again, I had two previously and love it. It is the implant they put in your arm and it is progesterone only so it's safe with breast feeding. It's good for 3 years. I love not having to think about bc on a daily basis bc I was horrible about taking the pill and the version that you have to take if you are breastfeeding is Super time sensitive (my sister was on the pill and breastfeeding and got pregnant at 3 months after her first). It is hormonal bc so I know some people hate that and some women have some spotting issues but I got mine at 3 weeks postpartum and I'm Hoping that by the time my regular postpartum bleeding stops the spotting from the implant is over with, otherwise with the first one I had I just had to wear the smallest liner possible which I was doing for pregnancy anyways. Definitely worth looking into if you're interested

I used the Mirena IUD before getting pregnant and I plan to use it again after I give birth. It was so nice to not have to give much thought to my birth control and I didn't have any negative side effects. My only concern with it was that if I want to have another baby relatively quickly would it make sense to get a long acting method. My doctor made the point that fertility returns very quickly after removing your IUD - faster than going off the pill, oftentimes. Which I can attest to, considering I got pregnant a month after removing my IUD this time around.

Lets see... Each of my 5 kids have been due to failed BC: Depo, pill, condoms + pill x 2, and nuvaring. My body doesn't do hormonal BC well. I've also had the Mirena IUD, and if I wasn't completely done with having spawn it's what I'd do again.

As it is, I'm having my tubes tied at my 6wk appt. Should be fun.

I've always loved my hormonal bc pills, I only ever had bad effects with one, my first a decade ago. I took it whenever I remembered with no scares let alone accidents, and got pregnant the first cycle I tried (I went off the pill 3 months in advance jic, used condoms during that time, but my period stayed completely regular exactly 28 days after going off). So I'd love to go back on the same pill I was on before conceiving, but I doubt it's BF safe so I may need an alternative meanwhile....

I had Mirena before and after my older son. LOVED it. No periods, no side effects, no thinking about it. It's safe for breastfeeding and pretty much an immediate return to fertility when you decide to have more kids. Got pregnant the first month off with DS#1 and the second month when we TTC again (unfortunately a m/c, but successful with this LO the first cycle we tried after giving my body a rest from the loss). Plus insurance covered it 100% since L&D maxed out my out of pocket share, so it was free for me. I'm getting it again. 98% sure we're done, but the 2% doesn't want to close the door for good. Highly recommend!

Coming from someone who got pregnant after the return of the first period (while exclusively breastfeeding my 8 month old) definitely use another method. I'm going with the Copper IUD this time because I prefer a non-hormonal option.

After my first, my doctor prescribed me a mini pill which she said was safe for use while breastfeeding, but I never took it. We just went back to condoms until we were ready to try for #2 when our first was going on a year old. Will probably go back to condoms after delivering this LO until she's done nursing, then back to my original birth control pill, until hubby eventually goes for a vasectomy.

We just use condoms. I don't do great with hormonal birth control and it's the easiest option for us.

I will probably go back to Mirena. My husband says he doesn't want more children but I think I do so I don't want anything permanent in case he changes his mind down the road.

I don't do well with hormonal birth control and can't get an IUD for other health reasons. Did anyone try natural family planning as an option or is it too difficult because our cycles will be a mess after?

SO has a daughter from his first marriage, now we have 2 little ones a year apart. Isn't that birth control enough? Lol. He wants to get snipped, but I'm putting it off until we are absolutely sure. I've seen so many people make that decision young and regret it. I plan on getting the Mirena IUD for now...

and quite possibly making SO sleep in the garage for the next forever. Take no chances, right?

The mirena is great. I had it fitted for treatment of endometriosis for years before getting pregnant. My periods basically stopped, there were no negative side effects for me and it didn't impact my fertility when it came to trying (which the pill can) and my periods returned straight away. Really very good option if you are planning more kids in the future. It releases a much lower dose of hormones than the pill as they are released directly where needed. The only downside is the fitting and removal procedures which are uncomfortable but only take 30 seconds.

@ChrissyD1203 I used NFP after my miscarriage before this one. We wanted to wait a few cycles to let my body rest. I used temping, which didn't work out so well, and also OPK strips that I bought on Amazon. Worked well - didn't get KU until we were ready. I highly recommend the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It explains it in detail. I also used the app Fertility Friend.

Question: is the Mirena worth it if you're planning on getting pregnant again within a year? I definitely don't want "Irish twins" but I do want my next one pretty close to this one.

@kvacmak Depends on how much it costs. If you have met your max and it's free, definitely. It's a quick, easy insertion and removal. Plus there's no thinking about it like pills (which are easy to forget in the crazy months with a young baby!), plus the return to fertility is immediate. But it can be pricey if not covered by insurance.

I want to get the Mirena inserted, but I'm worried about the irregular bleeding I've heard from a handful of friends and family. For those who've had it in the past, was the bleeding bad? I know it's different for everyone, but I would hate to be miserable by bleeding off and on for months.

No birth control unless my Endo wants me on some. We are doing a hysterectomy hopefully, but if my OB can't get insurance to cover it my tubes will be tied at the very least. I have PCOS and other uterine issues so a hysterectomy would really be in my best interest. But for my PCOS its my Endo's call.

I know it sounds weird, but I would totally be down with a hysterectomy. I'm never having more spawn, and I'd love to miss out on my super heavy periods for the rest of my life. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I don't have any medical issues to make that happen.

DH and I use condoms and never had issues. However, if we got pregnant by chance, we wouldn't have minded because we knew we wanted to have a child. Now, I'm hesitant on just using condoms as our method of BC, because I know we don't want another baby for 2-3 years, and possibly might not have anymore. I'll probably go on a BF approved pill and still use condoms because in the past, I haven't always been the best about remembering to take my pill at the same time every day.

I live in Canada and have drug benefits so cost is not an issue

So I mentioned to my mom how I should ask my doctor about birth control when I go for my check up and this is how our conversation went:

Me: remind me to ask the doctor about getting back on birth control when I go for my check up
Mom: well who are you planning on having sex with?
Me: I don't know, it's just the smart thing to do after you accidentally have a kid
Mom: but if you're not having sex then why would you need birth control?

OH MY GOSH MA, STAY OUT OF MY BUSINESS

I'd like the convenience of an IUD but I'm nervous about getting something implanted that I have to get removed if potential issues arise. I'm nervous about getting it at my age because if I remove it later and there's fertiity issues I know I will always wonder if I made a mistake getting the IUD. But then again I'm really not trying to be pregnant again until about 2 years from now & I don't trust my husband to follow the rhythm method..... Decisions... Decisions.... You get so caught up being pregnant you forget about what happens when you aren't pregnant anymore.

Typically, if you use a birth control without estrogen, your milk supply should be safe.

We will be using condoms in the short term and hubby will be getting a vasectomy. We have 2 under 2 and that is enough for us, we always knew we wanted two kids and we got them a little quicker than we thought and don't want to get a 3rd by accident!
