oral care

Hello everyone,

My LO seems so always have milk on her tongue. We've been to our pedi because we thought it was thrush. He wasn't sure if it was just milk or possible thrush starting so we treated her with Nystatin. After her treatment was up, it was still there. So we went back. He noticed it had not spread and said to just keep a watch on it to see if it spreads anywhere. Well a month later, at her 2 month shots, I made them look again! They were able to scrape some of it off so she said it was just milk. Also it has not spread in over a month. Does anyone have any tips on getting it off? Will it bother them or cause any rotting in their mouth? I know they don't have teeth yet but just wondering if there is something I can do to get it off. A lot of people said to give them water and it should wash it off but I'm not comfortable with giving her water at 8 weeks old, even if its just a little. Any tips would help, thanks!

Re: oral care

  • I just wipe out his mouth with a warm wet baby wash cloth, the soft ones. He actually really likes it and a little water isn't going to hurt them.
  • Loading the player...
  • Grayson always has milk on his lounge. My pedi checked it at each appointment, buy didnt say anything about needing to remove it. I don't really think it would be a problem, especially since they don't have teeth
  • I use a wet baby wash cloth. When Jordan won't let me in with my finger, I wrap the wash cloth around a qtip.
  • My pedi says u should wipe little ones tongue & gums with a wet wash cloth everyday to prevent thrush.
  • Perfect! Thank you ladies!
  • This is news to me.
  • I've never done anything to either of my kids' mouths. I don't think it's necessary.
  • I've never heard of wiping the inside of a baby's mouth!! How would that prevent thrush?
  • My son keeps his mouth clean with drool. Just kidding, but really I do nothing. He doesn't really get milk buildup, so I don't worry about it. And I think he'd probably have my head if I tried to stick a washcloth in his mouth.
  • I thought she's hate it as well.. to my surprise she seems to really like it! Thank goodness. I did not want to have to fight her on this one.
  • I'm not putting anything in my baby's mouth other than boob, bottle or pacifier. Why mess with something that's not even harming your LO? Why does it bother you if it doesn't bother LO? Do you use a pacifier because that seems to get the milk off my baby's tongue.
  • Yes we use the paci. I wasn't sure if it would bother her or not. I read about wiping their mouth clean and just wonder of anyone else did any kind of oral care. I read that it can still cause gum rotting and that just because they don't have teeth doesn't mean you shouldn't care for their mouth. Then, I seen it on a list of "10 mistakes a first time mom makes" and not doing oral care was one. Just wondering if it had any substance behind it or if anyone else had heard of it.
