BFing Question / Question re OB

Does anyone else get a gush of vaginal blood after a breastfeeding session? I'm assuming just my uterus contracting....

And that brings me to my second question. I'm so used to calling my OBs after hours line with questions, but I feel like that was a privilege for pregnant patients and I shouldn't be doing that anymore?

Re: BFing Question / Question re OB

  • Yes. Not sure how many days postpartum you are but this happened to me for about a week after delivery. Breastfeeding tells the body to contract uterus and helps with getting back to normal size and placement.

  • The on-call OB when I delivered said that those contractions are a really good thing! He said they help not only shrink you down faster but also because they're literally pushing everything out, you bleed for a shorter period of time. Another great reason to breastfeed. :)
  • Yep, I had those for about a week. Perfectly normal and one of those wonderfully glamorous things they don't tell you about having a baby :)
  • Call whenever you feel like you need answers - those lines are for urgent care needs and answering those questions comes with the profession. They will tell you if they can answer at the moment or they need to see you at the office
  • Most insurance companies also have a help line with nurses you can call if you have questions and don't feel comfortable calling the ob line.
