Registry Questions

When is the best time to start a registry, and what places are recommended to have a registry at?  DH and I were thinking Babies r Us and Target.  Any advice would be much appreciated.  We are going to be first time parents and expecting twins.  Anything that is a MUST have for twins?

When end is everyone planning their baby showers?  We are due 8/15 and I was thinking beginning of June for mine.

Re: Registry Questions

  • There is this awesome website called babylist.com that you can make a registry and add anything from any store, you can also add things like frozen home cooked meals and walking the dog. I like it because even though you registered for one thing at target, I find it cheaper at tj Max, I can still mark that I bought it so you don't get multiple of the same thing.

  • I echo PP. We registered at Babies R Us, Buy Buy Baby, and Target with DS. I will likely make a registry this time just to keep track of things that I no longer have but need, and won't be sharing it with anyone.

Also, please don't throw your own shower. It's typically considered to be in poor taste for the mother-to-be to throw her own shower. By all means have one if someone offers to throw you one, and you can certainly let her what what time frames work better for you, but ultimately it will be up to your hostess. If you're interested in baby shower etiquitte, please visit the baby shower board for more info.

  • Thanks for the advice.  I have never heard of baby list.com and will certainly check it out.

No worries, I am not planning my own shower...my sister and mom will take care of that.  But I will have input on when it will be.  I'd prefer to do it before I get too large and uncomfortable.
  • I did target and bru, it's personal preference based on what you like and what is closest to you. Registries can be super overwhelming so do your research and don't worry if it takes s long time to complete!

Baby showers are supposed to be given for you as a "welcome to motherhood". If your host asks what works best for you giving date input is acceptable. With my last baby I was due in late June and had the (big, main) shower at the end of April. I was thrown smaller events from early April to late May (my situation was weird due to a very compartmentalizaed life.)
  • We registered at Babies R Us, BuyBuyBaby, and Target. I also did a few small registered at Walmart and maybe Kmart in case people preffered those stores. Babies R Us was great about exchanges and returns. I think I started with car seat research around 16 weeks and slowly added until about a month before the shower. Consider adding 2 weeks to your due date when you set up your registry. Most stores give you a registry completion discount to be used within a month after your due date. If you go late, you have less time. And it takes a month or two to realize what you still need for baby. I would have appreciated another couple of weeks before our deadline hit to buy anything else we wanted at 20% off. Add the Aden & Anais Muslim swaddle blankets to your registry. I still use them as light blankets for my 2.5 year old. They are heavenly.

I'm starting my registry now, just because my mom and aunt already want to get things for LO so I can refer them to it instead of them buying me things I may not want/need since we have limited space.

  • Babylist is fantastic! It allows people to comparison price items at different sites. I love it

  • We are just doing Amazon. It had everything we could want and since we have prime, we get an extra discount.
  • We are on baby #2 so no showers here. But for my first I went to BBB and BRU.
We waited until I was 5/6 months before registering. I researched and played with some of the bigger stuff before picking that. We were team green so we kept things neutral.
I was due the first week of February and my shower was the beginning of December.

  • I am registering on Amazon.

As for throwing your own shower, I think the time of strict etiquette rules, like, "don't throw your own shower," are long past. That may be your preference, and you are welcome to deny invitations based upon your rules, but I am not lucky enough to live near any family, my family can't afford to fly out twice and I would rather have them at the birth, and I would not expect a friend to pick up the tab for my party. I think that is expecting way too much.
  • For our first, we registered at Buy Buy Baby and Target at around 20 weeks. I think we may have also registered at BRU for the completion discount (but didn't share the registry with anyone). Since this is our second, I am not expecting a shower/sprinkle. I'm not complaining... people were incredibly generous with our first so we are pretty well covered. I will probably register at BBB and Target for the completion discount again.

I was due late October and my shower was early September. I wasn't too uncomfortable but it was our only option as the summers in the desert are out of control.

My must haves are muslin swaddle blankets and lots of oxyclean.

  • We registered at 20 weeks officially after we had the anatomy scan. We did this for a couple reasons- it was when we'd know the sex and I also felt more comfortable registering and picking things out when I was that far along.

For this next baby I won't be having a shower I'm sure but my family may throw me a sprinkle (at their request) that will be small if this baby is a girl. (There are very few girls in our family and everyone is really psyched that we may finally get another one). Either way I will create a registry to use the completion discount at the end. If people choose to look it up great but we aren't planning to tell anyone about it not expecting gifts.

Also my close friend just had twins and her shower was thrown about 3 months before the due date bc of the high risk of her having them early. My shower was held about 9 weeks prior (single birth).

  • This isn't really in response to the original post, but y'all have done a good job instilling in me a fear of creating a duplicate post! :p
What stroller would you recommend? We are home bodies in general so we definitely don't need something to take on hikes or marathons. I had my eyes on a stokke scoot ( or xplory if i really wanna bow the budget) but I have no experience to base that on. I just like that it can face either way and has different reclining levels. . .? It's really hard to choose things when you have no frame of reference as to what is even preferable!

  • @Car0liiine picking out a stroller was the hardest!!! I wish I would have gone with something that could convert to a double the first time around since I planned on having kids close in age. We have a Bob and I loved it for our first but it sucks that we have to basically repurchase a more expensive stroller for the two kiddos. Kicking myself for not thinking ahead!

  • For our first, we registered at Target and Amazon, which worked out well. I was due in November and had my shower in August, which was a little early (had to do it for out of town family's schedules) but it worked out fine. I'd highly recommend checking out lucieslist.com for registry help, especially researching those bigger-ticket items and getting the lowdown on each option.

  • I wasn't and am still not a fan of the graco stroller that came as part of our combo set. Still love the graco snug ride click connect 35 but the stroller alone is not ideal. I should have just gotten a cheap cram stroller and bought a nice stroller separately because you really only combine the the car seat with the stroller for about 6 months. I begged my husband to just agree to get a double stroller from the start knowing we would have more kids but he was adamant that we never get a double stroller. He and his brother have really weird views on number of kids and types of cars to have and not doing the double stroller thing. It's quite odd and you just can't change their mind. I try to tell all first time moms - if you plan to have more kids, just get a double from the start. Otherwise you buy two strollers, much more expensive than just buying a double from the start.

  • I recommend going to a bbb or bru to try out strollers before buying. Both stores have a much larger selection to choose from and not all strollers are created equal. Also, although it may seem easier to get a car seat/stroller combo, most people only attach the car seat for the first few months. Most non-combo strollers have an attachment that is included or can be purchased to connect the car seat and imo a nicer stroller is worth the money.
  • I started a registry almost as soon as I found out I was pregnant with my first... though I didn't share it right away. I figured it would be a good idea to add things as I thought of them or someone recommended them. I chose Babies R Us... and one other store, but I can't remember. I would probably choose Target and Amazon if I had to do it again. Now that I'm on #5, I have ongoing Amazon wish lists for my kiddos in case anyone is interested, though I don't publish the list for the new baby till the cat is out of the bag.
  • You can make most registries private. I started one early with DS on Amazon and BRU, and that made the idea if completing a registry less daunting. Every time someone recommended or raved about a product, I would add it on the spot via mobile so I wouldn't forget it. And then I later narrowed stuff down after doing my research so I didn't have 8 strollers or something. After I had narrowed most stuff down I opened it up to being searched publicly.

And, regarding throwing your own shower - no. Just don't. I definitely don't think that's an old-fashioned rule; it's tacky. If you have enough friends or family in the area to attend a shower, someone will step up and throw you one. And if no one does, it's your own responsibility to provide for your child.
