weekly appointment. . . . . worrying about every little thing

I went to my weekly appt today, I am 37+5.  Baby's heartrate is great.  He is measuring 35 weeks by uterus size, again (last week too), and I haven't gained any weight in a few weeks either.  Doctor says everything is fine but wants me to go for a sonogram next week.  She said he might measure small because I am petite or because he is moving down into my pelvis.

I'm trusting my doctor, and this baby is moving around like crazy, but it still makes me worry a bit to hear he is measuring small.

Re: weekly appointment. . . . . worrying about every little thing

  • Trust your doctor and remember that every baby will fall within some percentile. My LO was in the lower 10% and even after birth (and at 2.5 years old) she still is a petite little thing :) GL on your sonogram, hopefully baby continues tracking up (even if still small)!

  • I went for an ultrasound because she was measuring two weeks ahead, so I went and she was measuring normal. Long story short, my ob says they can have a growth spurt one week and nothing the next and ultrasounds arent always accurate. So try not to stress! Even if shes a bit smaller, as long as shes healthy! dont let it stress you out!
  • Lurking from Dec 15, I know it's super hard not to worry about something like that, but like pps have said its hard for doctors to get super accurate measurements. Not only that but some babies are just small.
I had ultrasounds every week and DD was over a pound less than they had measured her to be almost 3 weeks before.
  • I was measuring 5 week behind at 32 weeks. I went in for a growth scan and baby was in the 85% for size.
Was still measuring 3-4 weeks behind at 36 weeks and went in for ANOTHER scan. Baby was then measuring in around 6lbs. I think it was nearly 30%. My first only weighed 6lbs and 7ozs. I just make small babies. But there was plenty of fluids and everything else looked good.

People are always shocked when I tell them how far along I am because my belly is tiny compared to so many.It does irritate me slightly but I am happy not to have stretch marks.

I'm hoping for the best for you and your babe.
  • 38+3 here and was measuring 34 weeks at my appointment yesterday. Dr said absolutely nothing about it. I did have a growth scan at 33 weeks due to measuring small but baby girl was measuring right on track in the 38th percentile , so they havnt said anything since. My girls tend to run a little small weighing in at 6lb 10 oz and 6lb 12 oz, Try not to worry and be thankful to maybe have a smaller baby to push out :)

  • I'm in the same boat! Always measuring on the small side, now my fundal height didn't change between weekly appointments so I'm headed for a growth ultrasound on Monday. It's hard not to worry, but my midwife stressed that he's probably totally fine, there are lots of factors influencing measurements, and this is just a precaution. And yes, it's reassuring to me how much he moves around. :) Good luck to you!
  • Same happened to me at 37 weeks. Turns out he was in the 76tg percentile lol. Have no fear, healthy babies come in all sizes. Belly size and weight gain don't mean anything for some women!
  • At my 39 week appt, doc measured me at 35. I am petite and doc is not bothered by measurements at all. This baby is a mover and doc laughs when she gets kicked at every appt, so she thinks we are just fine.
I'm sure everything is just fine with you!
  • My midwife measured me at 41 weeks and then re-measured me at 39 weeks thirty seconds later. Meanwhile, everyone always tells me I look small for being almost 40 weeks, when my measurementson have been bang on most weeks. I think there's a pretty big margin of error when it comes to measuring from the outside...

Your uterus is measuring small, not necessarily baby. I was usually 1-2 weeks behind with DS and he ended up being 21.5" and almost 9#! Measurements can be up to 2 weeks off either way, anyway. Try not to stress! As long as baby is active, all is probably well. But an ultrasound will reassure you. FWIW, I've measured small this time, too, but ultrasounds have put him in the 75-80% . Some women just carry that way.

  • Btw, I just got home from my ultrasound and they measured baby at well over 7 pounds, in the 44th percentile. Hope you get good news too!
