Club foot on ultrasound- anyone else?

Had my 20 week anatomy scan a few days ago and they found that the lil one has a mild right club foot. All my genetic screens came out in the lowest risk category but I'm still nervous as it's a soft marker for other issues. Does anyone else have any experience with this? Everything else looked great- I return for a follow up scan at 28 weeks.

Re: Club foot on ultrasound- anyone else?

  • Thanks so much- was hoping to hear of other stories like that  From what I've read online and what the doctor said, sounds like the outcome is usually positive and that it's an isolated event in my case. Can't help but worry about worst case scenario though (bad habit!)

  • It hasn't happened to me personally, but our youngest niece was born with both feet clubbed. They did a corrective surgery and she wore braces for awhile, but she's walking normally and everything now. Good luck!
  • My younger cousin had this: surgery after birth and no other symptoms; she's now a fashion blogger and mathematician who has the best taste in shoes I've ever seen (Brooklyn living!). She was never into athletics, but I'm not sure how much of that was capability and how much was being limited by her former club foot. But no one in our family is particularly athletic, so...
  • Thanks so much for sharing- definitely helps!
  • My son was born with severe club foot on the right back in 2006. Start researching ortopedic specialists that have lots of experience with club foot. My son had to have casts on his foot for a year, before surgery to lengthen his achilles tendon at 1 year old. Then, he wore a brace for 6 months, then a special insole in his shoe for a while. He is now 9, and had to have surgery on both feet since his bones shifted in both feet with growth spurts. His last surgery was the 18th of December, so he still has a cast on, and a brace in his other foot. He never had issues once he was done with the brace as a baby, until the growth spurts shifted his bones. Hopefully, he won't need any more surgeries and everything stays where it needs to be!

Luckily, your little one is showing a mild case, and hopefully that doesn't change! But even if it does, just know that there are great doctors who can, make it like it never even happened!
  • My nephew had club feet- he had to have casts on his little feet for a couple of months but he's perfectly healthy otherwise
  • Thanks for sharing! I can definitely handle the club foot diagnosis and am really familiar with the treatment- it's just hard not to worry that something else could be wrong. I don't think I'll relax until I meet her
  • My 7 year old daughter was born with clubfeet. It can be a terrifying experience but your baby will come out just fine! Like her orthopedic use to tell me: " This is more painful for you than for her" she won't even remember a thing! My daughter learn d to walk at 9 months, she's very active and has been in ballet and hip hop classes for 3 years! Here's a blog with my experience ;) God bless and know that it will all be ok

  • I posted in the rainbow babies check in about this earlier this week, as I didn't know where to post and this will be our rainbow baby after two losses. We had our 20 weeks scan and they think he has club foot but everything else looked perfect (heart/brain/etc) and our tests had all came back "negative" for genetic/chromosomal/ neurology defects and issues. But we are being sent to a high risk maternal fetal medicine Doctor next week for a higher tech ultrasound and confirmation. They also said if they find any other reasons for concern they may talk to us about amino (which we will likely not do due to the risks) but my doctor was not 100 percent that his feet were clubbed but it did look like they could be and wasn't at all concerned about something else being wrong. They just want to take all precautions. ALL that to say I completely understand what you're going through and I am in the same boat! The first few days were much harder than I thought and I'm constantly thinking about it. I am just thankful that it can be treated!! And at this point it doesn't look to be anything else wrong. I've researched a ton into it which has given me more peace. Even though we all want perfect babies, I'm sure they will still be perfect to us the minute we hold them in our arms. The casts and possible minor surgery and boots will all be worth it in the end. A happy and otherwise healthy baby is to be cherished every moment we have with them even now. I just keep focusing on his kicks and movements , knowing we will take on whatever comes our way later. Will have to keep in touch more once our babies come, I know I'll need the support with other club foot moms more then!!! I keep wanting to think it could be a mistake but I'm prepared myself for anything. Just try and stay positive, but if other emotions are stirring in you be sure to get them out. I tried to keep it together right away and it was not helpful I just needed to "let it out" those first couple of days. Sending thoughts and prayers!!
