  My RE explained that sometimes he'll start off with vaginal suppositories as it is less of a hassle to women, and less invasive (I suppose..lol).  He will typically switch women over to PIO as it is more reliable in having the body absorb specific amounts of progesterone.  I started off with PIO off the bat because I tend to have spotting during the TWW and wanted to reduce the risk of this happening.  He was completely on board with it.  I rather do a shot in the butt than a suppository but that's just my preference.

  I did suppositories for my fresh IVF cycle and my progesterone levels were too low and I ended up needing to increase my dosage. I am also very UTI prone, and the suppositories gave me a really bad one. When I switched to PIO for my FET my levels were excellent and I stayed at 1.5cc the entire time I was on them. It didn't help get me pregnant, but it kept my levels in a good spot. And as @Piperella said, the shots generally have better absorption rates than the supps.
