Vitamin D

Hey ladies,

Are all of you giving your littles vitamin D supplements?

I had actually never heard of this until a public health nurse suggested I get vitamin D drops for newborns prior to going into labour. I brought it up to my doctor and he said in his research, he didn't find it neccisary and that our bodies know how to absorb the little amount of vitamin D our bodies need simply from sitting by a sunny window. (He also had more reasons why it wasn't neccisary, all which made perfect sense to my husband and I).

I'm now contemplating if I should have him on drops, as a few people have questioned why we chose not to...I was curious to see what you all are doing!

Re: Vitamin D

  • I also never heard of this and I BF my older child and it wasn't even brought up. I find it especially odd since my first was born in Wisconsin and this LO was born on Guam. Obviously we get lots of sun, but the doc still recommended it for her since she's EBF and I read the full pamplet when I picked up the script. I trust my doctor so I do give them solely for that reason.

  • My doc recommended a supplement. The one she recommended is called Tri-vi-sol and it has vitamins A, C, and D in it.

  • My doctor recommended a supplement as well. D-vi-so is what we are giving her. He said most mom's don't get enough so unless you are using formula they should get the supplement. I know that alot of the people I have talked to though had never heard that so I think it just depends on your pediatrician
  • You only need it if you bfing
  • We were prescribed a supplement as well - the doctor told us that vitamin D isn't passed through breast milk, so baby isn't getting it that way.

It's also pretty common for winter babies to need a supplement, since depending on where you live there isn't as much sun and it can be too cold to take baby outside.
  • This is my third and first time a dr even mentioned it to me. They said since it's winter and they don't really go out too much, my LO should get vitamin D drops (if they're breastfed because formula has it)
  • My mom was asking why I give my little one baby d drops 1ml each day in one of her bottles. She said she had never heard of this and I didn't know about it until I took her to her pediatrian since she is only getting breast milk they recommend that I give them to her. They won't hurt her so I might as well.
  • Henry's ped wrote a perscription for vitamin D supplement drops. He puked every time I gave them to him, he was 3 weeks early so maybe that plays into the issue. Anyway, the Dr told me to take 1000 IU's of vitamin D3 myself and it would pass to him in my milk. I've been doing that and it's much gentler on his belly.
  • Long time lurker .. Just thought I'd share my experience with this. With DD she was ebf for 11 months. When we started the drops the doctor said to get ENFAMIL - D-VI-SOL VITAMIN D well that made her gassy/supper fussy. She is a July14 baby so I read the thread that board stated and a lot of the moms said the same thing along with other stuff. They suggested using Carlson baby vitiman D3 drops. Once we switched to that I saw a huge change and have never looked back. With DD2 we are doing the same thing. Hope this helps any bf mommas
  • Yep, the LC I see recommended Enfamil Poly-vi-sol drops, which he gets once each day.
  • I tried it for one day and it gave my boy the worst gas, so I stopped and the ped said that was fine. I'm EBF and she didn't seem concerned at all. I live in Washington, little to no sun right now.

  • I EP, and DS gets enfamil poly vi sol once a day. I believe we just got it at the local CVS. Only necessary for babies getting breast milk.

  • If you live in northern countries, the amount of sunlight your baby will get is not enough to give them the vitamin D they need, when breastfed. They need vitamin D to absorb calcium. If you live in a sunny area, maybe your Dr doesn't think it is necessary. But I live in cold, dark Canada and definitely do not want to miss a dose. My baby has seen very little daylight, let alone sunlight.
  • For BFing mamas, you can ingest 6400 IUs a day or more and it will pass through to your LOs.
  • My pediatrician said that Vitamin D does not pass through to breast milk so that's why we needed to supplement.

Yes, it does, but only in high doses. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17661565
  • We experienced the same issues with the Enfamil brand! There is a ton of other stuff in them and they need a full ml. Switched to a natural product with only one actual drop. Huge improvement in Fussiness and gas.
  • I was told as long as I took a dedicated Vit D supplement DS doesn't need the drops until 3-4 months.
  • Ob put me on vitamin d at the beginning of my pregnancy so the pediatrition said to keep taking it and I wouldn't need to give him any.
