Mamas with c sections

Can we talk healing? As a FTM my biggest fear was a csection, and that's what ended up happening unfortunately. Hasn't even been 24 hours yet but I'm interested to hear how everyone else is or has healed. Right now I'm miserable.

And please if there's already a thread on this let me know. I searched and didn't see one so let's hope I'm not just dumb lol

Re: Mamas with c sections

  • Honestly the first Three days I thought were really hard- then after that I found I got better in leaps and bounds. It's been 10 days now and I feel amazingly well. I wouldn't try lift anything too heavy or go for a big walk but I can do the shopping and look after bub not a problem. I forget sometimes and get up wrong or too quick, that hurts- but the fact that I'm able to forget means it really mustn't hurt much! Just don't over do it and take all your pain meds!!

  • Move around as much as you can now! Walk in the halls, sit up out of bed in a chair, it will help you feel better quicker. My section was 5 years ago, I remember the first week being a bit rough, getting out of bed was the worst! But I started feeling much better after that first week.
  • Each day you will start to feel better! I had my c section about three weeks ago and I feel completely fine now, the first few days in the hospital were horrible for me though, I hated when they made me get up to walk I would shake it hurt me so bad. When you get home the hardest thing for me was getting out of bed, just make sure you have help the first week, but everyday you will feel yourself getting better and less sore, just make sure you take it easy
  • I am recovering from my Monday night c section. I keep trying to put off pain meds but then I wind up having an epic melt down around 2am every night, in pain and just feeling hopeless. I had a nasty cold before delivery which left me with a nasty cough that is really making my pain difficult to manage. During the day I feel ok, especially when getting snuggles from my sweet baby so that is what I try to keep my mind focused on during the rough times. It is encouraging to hear from other moms that this will get better in only a few weeks which seems long in terms of pain but short in comparison to 41+ weeks of miserable pregnancy!
  • Mine was very easy. The first day obviously I was confined to bed which sucked because that's when the gas pain started settling in my shoulder. Day two when I was able to get out of bed, I walked around everywhere. It was slow but I did laps around my room. Sitting up in the chair instead of laying in bed. That night my son pulled the IV out of my hand while nursing. we decided to keep it out which meant the epidural came out of my back too. Fine by me. Kept moving around and making myself get up and down. By day 3 I was golden. I haven't taken a single pain med for csection pain since day 4. Now I take them only for boob pain from nursing. Who knew nursing pains would hurt worse than the csection. Aggressive eater they call him. Ow. We are on the verge of switching to formula.
  • I healed really fast from my C-section.  I definitely attribute it to getting up and moving around as soon and as much as I could.  My C was at midnight and by midday, as soon as the nausea wore off, I was forcing myself to walk from the bed to the bathroom.  The nurses told me I was pushing myself too hard, but I wanted to make sure I was able to go home on time and wanted to have confidence that I could care for my son when I got home without too much assistance.

I remember getting after laying down or sitting was the hardest.  Once I got home, I longed for the hospital bed because regular beds don't have rails to use to help pull yourself up.

That incision site is a different story though.  My C-section was 2.5 years ago and the incision site still sometimes gets itchy and sometimes still bothers me when clothes rub up against it.

  • Do yourself a favor and don't put off taking the pain medication! Especially in the first week maybe 2 weeks. The pain meds will help you get moving which is going to help you heal, being in pain during any of this time doesn't help anybody. After the second week I didn't need the pain medication anymore. Now I'm on week 3 & I feel pretty good..
  • I had two. I would say if this is your first stay at the hospital as long as you are allowed. Where I live that is 96 hours post op. Get moving, I know it sucks, you are sore and feel like and old lady when you walk but it will help you. But at the same time don't push yourself too hard. I only took meds once after I left the hospital, but take them if you need them, I just didn't like how they made me feel. When you get home, unless you live in a ranch style, have your SO set up a area for you. You should be doing a lot of stairs. Wear the wrap if the gave you one. It mademe feel so much better.

Have you tried nipple shields? They may help.
  • Everyone else covered most of it. I just want to reiterate the TAKE YOUR PAIN MEDS advice. It's so much easier to stay on top of pain than play catch up.
Also, don't be surprised at any numbness you have between your bellybutton and groin. Nerves get cut during the surgery. Most of the feeling should come back, but some might not. My first was 7yrs ago, and I still have a couple of numb patches from it.

  • First week was the hardest. By the time I got home on day 5 post surgery I was on regular strength Tylenol. Just be gentle with yourself and try not to sit up using your ab muscles as much as possible. Also if you need to cough hold your stomach with a pillow and do it gently. I had a wicked cough around the time of my surgery and that was the worst part of recovery. The one thing I'm greatful for with a c-section is no recovery needed for my lady bits!
Hope your feeling better soon! Congrats on a beautiful bBy girl :)

  • Lattemom- I haven't yet. The nearest place to buy them are about 45 min away. I'm going to look for them next week when we go to the doctor.
  • Thanks ladies! I was really scared for today because everyone said the second day was the worst but I feel great! Soooooo much better than yesterday when I wanted to cry every time I moved. I can even bend down to the side and pick fhings up. I got my support belt and will put that on with the help of the nurse later. The only thing that sucked is for some reason I got sick this morning and started throwing up. That was not fun trying to hold the vomit bag and try and hold a pillow down over my belly lol. But it honestly wasn't even as painful as I thought!
