1st Trimester

Bad Breath & DHA/Omega3

OK so I already used the search function and got some insight about bad breath during pregnancy. I have seen posts about gingivitis during pregnancy... But my breath doesn't actually smell bad to others. Only to me.

Lately I have been having a weird taste in my mouth. And when I breathe out and smell it I am convinced that it smells. DH cannot smell anything and he said my breath actually smells sweet. I asked my sister and she said it didn't smell. I really really breathed hard in their faces, and I know they definitely wouldn't lie to me.

I have noticed that lately I have been tasting everything differently. Tonight, my calamari tasted like it was a breaded in salt, my salad tasted like fish, and a bite of DH's chicken francaise tasted like it was marinated in wine for three days.

So obviously, I am tasting and smelling things differently. Which is normal, I know. But I don't know why I have a weird taste in my mouth all the time. What am I tasting / smelling? I am wondering if it is the DHA/omega-3 supplements that I'm taking. Has anyone ever noticed this after taking those supplements?

I always take such good care of my teeth. I floss every night and brush at night and in the morning. Sometimes in the middle of the day too. And I'm definitely drinking enough water so it can't be dehydration.

Sorry this post is kind of all over the place. If anyone has any insight or if you are going through the same thing please chime in!

Re: Bad Breath & DHA/Omega3

  • I take fish oils every day and have never noticed this. The only thing that's ever given me a weird taste is this new lip gloss I got once. My mouth tasted like soap and I couldn't figure it out!
You could switch to those coated fish oils that are meant to minimize "fish burps". Otherwise, talk to your doctor. There may be some explanation for it!

  • Pregnancy can also have an effect on the way things taste. A lot of my formerly favorite foods don't taste right anymore. It's just a bad weird taste I have. I've been to the dentist and I'm fine but it's just me. My ob said it was normal. Sometimes it's a metallic taste, sometimes it's acidic, other times I don't know how to describe it. Yay hormones... **insert eye roll**

  • When I take my prenatal with DHA/Omega3. I chug water to make sure it goes down. That's the only way to avoid fish burps for me. It's probably hormones but if it's a real concern. Talk to OB, like other PPs have said. Or maybe go to the dentist if you're almost due for a cleaning?
  • Thank you for your responses so far ladies!
  • I take a separate DHA (Olly brand at Target), and the outside of the pill has a berry smell to it. I believe that is the only reason I can get it to go down without gagging. Haven't had any weird smells because of the pill though.

I know that during my 1st Tri in my first pregnancy, I lost all taste in my mouth. It was like nothing had flavor and I was eating air. I had to put hot sauce or Siracha on everything I ate, just to taste SOMETHING. It went away after the 1st Tri. If you had YH and your sister smell, and they don't smell anything, it could just be that something is off and it could be gone by the end of your 1st Tri.

  • Yes, I was told by Dr. that bad breath is a side effect of pregnancy... Not everyone gets it, I guess we are just lucky!! Ick! But I was told it usually goes away after the 1st trimester... Here's to hoping.
