Children with Special Needs

Hello all! I want to start this thread for moms and future moms of babies with special needs. When I was expecting the first go around I really wish I had a place to go and ask questions, get support, and sometimes just vent.

I have a little boy (2 years old this Feb) and we found out that he had pretty significant issues when I was 12 weeks pregnant. It was a very hard but rewarding journey.

Feel free to use this thread however best suits you. It's Ok to be upset and no questions are off limits. Hopefully we can find support for anyone going through this.

By the way: my child is the best thing that has ever happened to my family.

Love to you all!

Re: Children with Special Needs

  • While I do not have a child with special needs, I am an RN at a major children's hospital where I love on my special needs kiddos every day!

  • I am step-mom to an 18 yo autistic son who is the funniest kid I have ever met. I am 9w pregnant and we are electing to get genetic testing in a few weeks. Though it won't identify something like autism, we are concerned enough to check. I am happy to answer any questiosn, the good, the bad, and the ugly. We can all help each other!
  • @juleswalsh Are you glad that you had the genetic testing done? Did it help you to prepare for your son's arrival?

Thank you for answering questions -- it's really great of you.

  • I need to add that my son's conditions are not genetic in nature. Otherwise , I would definitely do the screening!
  • My oldest son who is now 11 is in the autism spectrum. Some days are challenging but many days just so awesome.
