Tips on getting baby to latch?

We nurse side to side or baby on top. Sometimes it hurts and his lips aren't always flared out. I'm 17 weeks pp. and have pumped from the start due to issues at beginning but I am sick of pumping so the last 3 days Have been nursing and almost cutting out all bottles down to 2. I only pump 14-16 so he had that and the rest formula. He drinks 30-33 a day. I wanna continue nursing but in heat of moment when he is so hungry I can't fuss with latches.

Re: Tips on getting baby to latch?

  • When latching, hold his chin down to encourage him to open wide and do t put him to breast until you get it. I found it hard in the beginning to latch side by side. Football hold was easiest but I do t know if that would be the case because baby is much bigger and we don't do that position anymore

  • So physically take my hand and pull his chin down before clamping down?
  • We had issues exactly like yours . I was EPing and found out my son had a tounge and lip tie . His lips didn't flare and he clicked while he ate

We are 17 wks and just had the revision last Thursday . Now he won't even take a bottle
  • Just keep trying. I struggled with this a lot in the beginning, it will get easier. I would very gently hold the chin open and then if needed gently pull her lips out into the flared like look while she was latched. If can be helpful if you tug your nipple out before you start to make less work for baby. I know it can be incredibly frustrating when you first start and sometimes you will need to break the latch several times and try again before you get a good one. I did only pumping for a while in the beginning too and now that we've switched to only nursing it's been way easier. I haven't given her a bottle in months.

Yes. He should let you when you try. Then put him to breast. I hope that helps.
  • Can you see a lactation nurse? It will be super helpful

  • Do you have a boppy?  I just set the boppy on my lap, then the baby lays on the boppy across my body. Like cradle.  She's right at boob height then.  I also grab my boob like a bottle, wait for her to open wide and then put boob in mouth.  Laying down to breastfeed is very difficult,
